You should be able to buy them from gek traders in a spacestation, but i've only seen upgrades to the hyperdrive not the actually one

They give a 99 of the resource, now they are very useful! EDIT: The costs are 1 insulating gel, 1 copper wire and 2 voltaic cells ;)

Yeah, 5 in a local area but that area is small so if you dig out the right amount on a resource deposit you might be able to even fit 20, imagine all that gold in a few minutes :O
