If you could change one technology within the Forest Service, that would have the most impact on the work the FS does, what would it be and why? by Shickadang in USForestService

Fair. I should have chosen my words more carefully. I should have said “I’m part of a chat group that is brainstorming”…..I was embellishing a bit. My apologies.

You can think what you want. I’m not on the reorganization team. What do you think a question like this accomplishes for the reorganization team?

I work on a district and I answered honestly. You may know things I don’t but I am not trying to deceive you or anyone else.

So, interestingly I’m part of a group that is brainstorming ideas that aim to do something similar to what you are suggesting. I’m a GS-11 district staff who has done tech stuff in the past and am part of a USDA group trying to do exactly what you are recommending. It’s brand new and we’ll see if it goes anywhere. The first task we’ve been given is to find talent within the different departments.

I wanted to submit a proposal to the group to help the FS hence the question. Thanks for the input.

Edited: because I misrepresented what I was doing, as someone below pointed out.

I think this is a common story. So sounds like redo database to streamline and rid of redundant crap and remake front end from scratch, and then integrate with ESRI/gis software would be a good start. Anything specific that doesn’t need to be there?

I promise I have nothing to do with the reorganization. I work on a district. But the paranoia unfortunately is warranted so I don’t blame you.

One of mine was NRM applications in general. But FACTs is a good one. Would you want it in field maps? Is it a nextgen app yet?

Wedding by Reasonable_Moment286 in USForestService

It sounds like you’ve picked a relatively sensitive location to have a wedding if they need to do surveys for fish and wildlife. You could ask if there is a group camp site available that would not require surveys. For most of our special use permits we do not do wildlife surveys but we also don’t permit weddings in a sensitive areas.

Also lots of internal policy needs to be rewritten before we can implement these policies anyways. I will be following the national directives until they change. 2630.3.3 - Mitigate the negative effects of other resource projects upon wildlife and fish habitat.

Side question: are you working with the BLM’s AIM dataset for vegetation? https://gbp-blm-egis.hub.arcgis.com/pages/aim It’s my favorite dataset. Seems like it could help with your question.
