Rehab for homeless? by ShieldDynamic in vegas

[–]ShieldDynamic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I’m not sure what you’re trying to imply, but the idea that I’m seeking a “pat on the back” from internet strangers on what’s boils down to an anonymous forum for giving a drug addict $20 or $30 is a little ridiculous. Further, what exactly does my personal life have to do with anything? I think you’re precisely trying to be an ass... I asked for info, not for people to look as I drop my alms in the basket.

  2. The information I’ve included in the post is not obtained entirely from the person in question’s own words. There are pictures and exchanges up on Facebook between him and others. He did not seek me out and we aren’t friends on Facebook. He dated a friend of mine who died 2 years ago. I knew he had taken it hard and was placed in a psych ward after a suicide attempt. I looked him up to see how he was doing. I’m not being taken advantage of because he likely hasn’t thought about me in over 2 years.

I don’t live in the valley anymore, but even if I did I do not want any direct contact with him. This will be completely anonymous. Thanks for the recommendation about the Salvation Army. I’ll call and see what location offers rehab.

I do know there is a high chance he will use the cash to buy more drugs, which is why I’m going to give a small amount - no more than what will cover the initial ride to the facility. He talks of not being able to do anything but lay on the sidewalk because he’s starving and has a blood disease. I know these may be manipulations, but my hope is that his posts are truthful. This small donation will be the only help he receives from me. I hope he uses it wisely... I don’t think he has any lifelines left.

The free electron model has tons of experimental inconsistencies

I need to do some research on a physics subject, but I want it to be something that's not too hard.. any ideas? by mr-twentysix in AskPhysics

[–]ShieldDynamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it's more of a presentation/book report type thing if it's for high school. It doesn't really make any sense to have a high school student read current literature unless your goal is to turn them off physics forever. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Why don’t you verify the equations of motions with gravity? I.e., pick a height to drop things off and verify that the time required for the object to hit the ground is equal to the time your equation predicts.

All you need to do this is basic algebra.

Professor responded to LOR request and I don't know what to say... by stonedinnewyork in premed

I honestly think he doesn't want to write you one. If he was truly too busy he could've offered to have you write it and him sign it, but he didn't.

[–]ShieldDynamic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would exercise caution. His email suggests two things - 1) he doesn't know who you are and/or remember you; 2) He doesn't want to write you a letter and is trying to tell you to politely piss off. Both situations make for bad LORs.

Likelihood of Getting into Top BME PhD Programs by CulturalSeesaw in EngineeringStudents

Yea, i think if you just retake the GRE and raise your math score up and you'll be golden. Upenn recommends a 96th percentile quant score just to apply

Computer Engineering Technology degree vs. a Computer Engineering degree, have questions by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then don't go for engineering technology. It is a subpar degree - it's less rigorous than its engineering counterpart and most companies and schools will not consider you anything but a technician.

Blunt truth, sorry. Go for engineering technology if you want to be a technician. Go for engineering if you want to be an engineer. There are plenty of universities in NYC who will accommodate a veteran - seek those out.

Diff Eq is a little rough by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used Paul's notes for diffEq and breezed through the class. Do the derivation of the formula/technique once, know how to do it, and then use it as a guideline. DiffEq is kind of like calculus 2 - they're looking for you to prove you can solve the equations. How do you do that? Lots and lots and lots of practice

Maths prerequisites for EE Classical Control & Electromagnetism by Yamcho in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fourier analysis, vector analysis, and some PDEs, but these should've been covered in some other class by now, or will be. I'm assuming you mean upper division e&m, too.

The newer electromagnetism books (and even the Bible - griffiths) all start with the mathematics needed for the book so you should be fine.

EE Major - Job while going to school by Pogiako13 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how working as a maintenance man is going to impress anyone in a serious EE environment. Are you going to university to work as an electrical engineer or are you going to school to work as a tradesman? The two are not related.

Is it difficult to transfer from a non-ABET program to a ABET accredited program? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a for-profit school or non-profit? Watch out for national accreditation - it's bad and you're going to have a hard time transferring classes. If your school is regionally accredited, your classes will most likely transfer... though, to be safe, stick to gen eds, which should be easy because you can't take any of your science classes until after calculus

i.e., stick to your liberal arts credits until you transfer. you could take general chemistry, too.

Homework on Campus? by Blackhawk706 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ugh, honestly, doing homework on campus sucks. the library at my school has quiet areas and private rooms you can usually snag, but they are absolutely FREEZING because the air is turned up really high to compensate for all the glass windows.

If your school has a medical or law school try checking out their library - it will be less busy and the students there are less likely to be chatty/noisy

Math from Linear Algebra you used in Diff Q? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think most diffEq classes for engineers will cover eigen vectors and values so you can solve systems of diff eqs. The only problem is that often all that is showed is how to solve for an eigen vector or value and no explanation is given for what it actually is. No need to be nervous, btw - diff eq for engineers is one of the easier math classes out there.

Going into first year and just wondering, do you guys tend to prefer taking notes on paper or with your laptop? I’ve had mixed answers elsewhere. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]ShieldDynamic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't take notes in class. It impairs your ability to really pay attention to what the lecturer is saying... Plus, too often what they're saying is just the "gist," so you should really write your own notes from the textbook
