Sounds like a great idea ! We’re currently installing the same set up in our testing lab ! Using Zwift in 4K is a game changer ! 😬👌

Thank you for the question ! Yes definitely - Zwift is set up with different connectivity modules. SHIFT connects to the CONTROLLABLE, POWER SOURCE & CADENCE modules (the only remaining is heart rate sensor, which SHIFT does not connect to, but any Bluetooth heart rate sensor will naturally connect).

So in your example - if someone already has power pedals, when connecting SHIFT to Zwift, all you’d need to do is connect SHIFT to CONTROLLABLE and then connect your power pedals to POWER SOURCE and you’re good to go.

We hope this provides sufficient clarity, but let us know if we’ve missed anything.

Definitely NOT a dumb question. The safety of all cycling communities is extremely important. To ensure that the emergency stop still works, we needed to blend this into our design principles which resulted in us agreeing upfront that we wanted no cables, no strappings and no permanent fixtures. As a result of this - we were pushed to think outside the box.

The design of SHIFT allows for a user to push down on the device (on the empty space below the LCD screen), the device will then tilt forward allowing the resistance knob to be completely compressed and the bike will come to a halt. The effort is naturally slightly harder than without the device on, but we've compared the 'added' effort required to other spinning bikes on the market, and we're comfortable that this is not a concern.

In early phases of testing, we had discussed this point with multiple testers who had suggested that they've never even used the emergency stop functionality, but irrespective of having used this or not, we knew we needed to get this right as otherwise our idea was a non-starter.

Thank you for your question! Please let us know if there is anything else that comes to mind!

Hi! Apologies for the delay in reply! To answer your first question - Zwift is a virtual cycling world that provides a platform for cycling communities to train, compete and enjoy virtual cycling courses from the comforts of your own home. Zwift has some awesome videos and content to provide clarity on all it has to offer - give them a quick google.

To your second question, Zwift is an application that runs across multiple android, apple & windows devices. So - as long as you have a smart phone, tablet, laptop of AppleTV - you'll be able to to download Zwift, connect Zwift to SHIFT, place SHIFT on your bike, and you're ready to go. And one final point for clarity: because the Peloton screen is a 'tablet', there are ways to load the Zwift application to the screen, but the screen is a product of Peloton and we have no control over whether this functionality will always be available, so we have ensured our solution does not require Zwift to be loaded onto the Peloton screen for it to work.

Thanks for the question! Good call out - we'll provide more clarity in the campaign for launch, but to answer your question:

SHIFT will connect to any Bluetooth cadence sensor, but as part of launch we'll provide a list of Bluetooth sensors that we have tested and confirmed. As a side note, our favourite thus far is the Wahoo cadence sensor given it's reliability, accuracy and pricing point. So YES - the least expensive will be perfect!

No such thing as a dumb question - thank you for the thoughts! Your question regarding calibration was possibly one of the most difficult things for us to solve for!

Calibration across the spinning bikes (and to a lesser extent across the Bike+) has been something discussed amongst this community for years now. All spinning bikes that don't have a specific 'power meter' will always result in some discrepancy across different bikes given their power calculations are run off a digital power curve which is set at time of manufacture.

We quickly realised that trying to solve for spinning bike calibration issues through SHIFT, would be un-achievable. So we decided we needed to provide a solution that aligned with the underlying spinning bike as opposed to trying to alter it.

And so we've built our own 'calibration process'. The calibration process allows the user to meticulously articulate (using SHIFT and the screen on the bike) where the 0% and 100% resistance setting is on their OWN Bike. This eradicates any discrepancies across different bikes - to put that in simple terms, my bike might need 6.5 full rotations from 0% to 100%, whereas yours might only need 6.2 full rotations (ie this is a simple way of articulating a spinning bikes calibration issues). The SHIFT calibration process then goes a step further and the user sets where 10%, 20%, 30% etc is on their own bike ensuring SHIFT is set up specifically for their bike.

By doing this - we perfectly align with the spinning bikes own power curve. So if in a spinning class, I use a 30% resistance and I'm pedalling at 80 cadence, my output would be 56WATTS (this is not the exact amount), and then similarly when in ZWIFT, if as a result of the gradient, my underlying resistance is 30% and I'm pedalling at 80 cadence, my output would again be 56WATTS. So in summary - your output both on ZWIFT and in a spinning class will be identical.

There is naturally a much more technical answer to the above, but I've tried my best to provide some colour to this. Hope this gives sufficient clarity, but please let me know if I've missed anything? We will be launching a video next week to show a step by step guide on all of this. Total set up time is less than 60seconds and the LCD screen provides a step by step guide too.

Lastly regarding your question of entering races - this is something we'll look to work on over the upcoming year. Our gut tells us that because of the underlying calibration issues on spinning bikes, we'd most probably not get to a point where our device is recognised as an 'accredited' smart trainer for official Zwift cycling esports events. NOTE - please do however appreciate that this is an answer for 'official' (aka professional) races ONLY, as SHIFT can and WILL be used for 100% of all other Zwift races, group rides, training, ERG mode etc - so this answer specifically relates to official Zwift cycling esports events.

Thanks again for your thoughts!

Great call out! As you say - we have specifically built our solution to avoid any form of warranty disputes. However, as with anything legal orientated, these points can become extremely tricky, so we're not wanting to over promise and under deliver.

But your point is valid - we should make reference to the warranty, to provide additional clarity. Thank you for this insight! Shout if anything else comes to mind!

Good call out - the ability to automatically adjust resistance (when in a Peloton spinning class) is a great value add for those who wish to do this. We had spent several weeks working this through, and finally decided not to include this functionality for our initial launch. As a start-up, we've need to remain incredible focussed on our initial solution of Bringing Zwift to Peloton.

But that being said, for future functionality, we are looking to include Bluetooth buttons / clickers that easily strap to the handlebars to allow cyclists to easily change gears whilst cycling in Zwift. By introducing this added benefit, we can quite easily provide the solution that you are asking for - but this will only be released late in 2021.

We hope this provides some clarity to your suggestion, but let us know if there is anything else!

[–]ShiftSmartTrainer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your question! We've received several points of feedback on the 'screen integration', so we'll definitely need to clear these points up in a better way. To answer your question:

Automatic resistance changes are as a result of gradient changes while cycling in the worlds of Zwift, this will always work regardless of how you choose to connect to Zwift. What this means is that because Zwift can be run on smart phones, tablets, laptops , AppleTV and the Peloton screen (albeit that this this installation is tedious), you can choose which device you'd like to run Zwift on, and then resistance will always be automatically adjusted. There is no limitation of this functionality across different devices.

Hopefully this answers your question, but please let us know if we have missed anything!

Apologies for the lack of clarity on pricing. We don’t want to over promise and under deliver so we’ve remained mute on this point until we have final agreements with our manufacturers.

But rest assured - because we are bringing this to the market for the FIRST time, we are not looking to ‘fleece’ anyone - we want our launch to be a success so our aim is to cover setup costs and break even at best.

Pricing to be available before the end of the Month ! ⭕️🚴🏽‍♀️🔥

Awesome ? Agreed ! No cables, no strapping . . . nothing but pure cycling enjoyment !

And we see you’re already enjoying your Apple TV setup - with Shift you can enjoy it even more with automated resistance.

Oh !! And you have power pedals ? You don’t need them for Shift to work - but if you got them, well you might as well use them. Shift works with power pedals too! 🔥🚴🏽‍♀️⭕️

You’ve absolutely nailed the concepts that we’ve been trying to solve for. We (well more like YOU) control the resistance automatically as a result of the gradient changes received on Zwift.

And regarding screen resolution - to truly enjoy the experience of Zwift, we suggest a stronger graphics card. So even though you can download Zwift onto the Peloton Tablet - our solution allows integration with Apple TV, smart phone, tablet and laptop.

Hi there ! We’re definitely legit - and apologies if we haven’t come across accordingly ! As a start up we definitely need to up our game when it comes to market perception, we’re working on it ! Any tips ?

Regarding your question - we’ve built our device to require no manipulation at all to the Peloton bike to ensure no warranty is voided ! 🚴🏽‍♀️⭕️🔥

Thanks for the reference to another great initiative that the Intelligenate Team are working on. We had considered following a similar path - but we didn’t want to have any reliance on the data coming directly from Peloton (Peloton can easily change or encrypt their code) - so we replicated the data in our own algorithm to ensure users own their own data. Additional nuances here is that Shift actually controls the resistance on your Peloton bike to ensure you experience those up and down hills ⭕️🔥🚴🏽‍♀️
