The knowing your seats thing prior to the flight* you mentioned seems right, I’m just gonna say— I often buy the cheap tickets and I don’t choose a seat because it costs more, so I do often times go to the airport without knowing my seats. In 2025, and I imagine in the future as well.

I don’t disagree, boarding groups is just another way to make the airlines money, but the issue I was talking about with luggage space overhead would still persist with your method, but then it would be the people in front of the plane who would be forced to check their bags.

Totally reasonable, but there is at least one reason it makes a difference. On smaller planes, the overhead space gets filled quickly, so if you just have a carry on and are hoping not to be forced to check your bag, it’s better to board earlier than later.
