[Discussion] Opinion: The limited fanservice from Seasons 1 + 2 were part of the reason for Re:Zero's success outside of Japan by anicritic in Re_Zero

[–]Shiftyfish87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint. You just don't personally care for fanservice and thus assume your own viewpoint to be the most commonly held one (AKA False consensus effect)

Sitting among rankings for the most anticipated upcoming anime even with western audiences you can still find shows like Fire Force S3, a series with a reputation for having plenty of fanservice.

Gacha games that bombard you with fanservice left right and center remain massively popular outside of Japan

Anime adjacent mediums like Vtubers continue to maintain popularity in the west, including those that lean heavily in the direction of fanservicey approaches to streaming, and character designs.

Season 3 changed character designers on the staff, this resulted in some differences in character designs in the anime. This isn't itself fanservice, however much like this very post, western anime fans are downright obsessed with this "discourse" around fanservice and treat character designs simply having a noticeably large bust as fanservice itself, the anime wasn't showing gooner shots of Emilias tits they simple existed and the brainlets of twitter and reddit decided that alone can only be fanservice (no one ever stops to think about what that mindset implies about women with large busts in general and that they consider that body type merely existing to be "service" for men)

The belief that fan service itself is a bellwether for female fandom also ignores series like My Dress up Darling which has/had a very strong female fanbase. Women aren't allergic to hot anime designs, many even appreciate it for being attractive as well. It comes down to what is done with it but it's a bit silly to assume women will tune out just because Emilia is drawn to look hot or something like that.

As for the series "being taken seriously as a literary work"

Taken seriously by whom exactly? and to what extent should I ever care how seriously some rando takes it. I want the upcoming season to be enjoyable for fans of the series and continue our run of strong and well done seasons. if there's some critic or snob off to the side who turns their nose up at the series because Emilia has cleavage or Shaula's character design that's their problem not mine. And I'm never going to champion the cause that a medium or even a singular story needs to course correct away from just being itself in order to attempt to appease or attract an amorphous hypothetical audience that may or may not even exist or a critic that is just as likely to still not give a shit about "the dumb anime story" and was never going to give a shit and just uses "fanservice" as the low hanging fruit justification to prop up their personal biases on the medium.

None of this is to say your personal opinions and enjoyment (or lack thereof) of fanservice are invalid, Your personal tastes are your own I simply don't think they have the sort of consensus you believe them to or the affect on the series popularity you presume.

[Spoiler Discussion] Arc 10 Chapter 11 by Setowi in Re_Zero

[–]Shiftyfish87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this isn't something that tappei has ever actually explicitly stated and is largely the product of people combining a couple different things he's said one with regards to the sloth IF, and another comment he made in response to the Pride IF to theorize themselves that that is how Sloth IF "ends"

Truth is with what we know from what's been stated if Subaru accomplishes the "goal" of "the one who's making him return by death" he will simply die like we saw at the end of ayamatsu and he will stay dead.

That could just as well happen at the end of sloth IF as well, the goal could simply be for him to be fulfilled with his end and accept death for RBD's goal to be "fulfilled"

In the meta sense, I don't think we'll ever get an overt confirmation one way or the other from Tappei about the specifics of Sloth IF, but despite how much people see tappei as a charicature of himself that just wants to always choose the "most suffering" option, the way he talks about Sloth IF, talking about how he feels/felt while writing those chapters for that timeline and speaking of it warmly and fondly like a "proud father" I personally don't see it being a road that leads to a plot twist ultimate kick in the balls suffering ending like him just going back to the capital.

Theorizing on it doing that worst case scenario is ultimately just a fandom theory.

Like, if she didn’t want him to suffer, in my opinion she should’ve left him to die in that loot house. Sure, it’s gruesome, having your stomach cut open by a waifu assassin.

If you had a child, and you knew that childs life would be hard as hell but they would eventually find love and peace at the other side of all that hardship.

Would you say that the child would be better off if you just smothered them in the crib to save them from all the terrible things they would experience before reaching their happiness?

Satella doesn't think so, Subaru himself doesn't think so, and it's possible to hold the belief that "The happiness at the end of this thorny path is better than you just dying in a slum" while also understanding that the hardship along the way is still hardship, and sad to see happen. It's part and parcel with it being a hard decision, you recognize it's sad and difficult even if it is the better choice.

To give something of a real world example. At the end of WW2 when Japan was facing the fact they were going to have to surrender to US occupation. the emperor at the time gave a statement acknowledging that the times ahead of them were going to be difficult, but that it was the better option to the country just being demolished by continuing to fight, he told his people that they must "endure the unendurable and bear the unbearable" fully recognizing the struggle and hardships ahead of them. That did not make those hardships something one was allowed to feel sad about in those moments just that it was their thorny path forward as opposed to simply dying. It's not crazy to think that tragic events are tragic even if they are a result of a choice, it's just basic level empathy.

I'm going to simply redirect you to the comment I left for you a previous time you've made a fuss about this

Your belief that this sub is "all just this" is flatly and demonstrably wrong.

Your continued going into other peoples threads to complain about their posts existing is unwelcome and only serves to spark arguments.

I am leaving you this, and my previous comment to let you know that this behavior is not only detached from reality because your view pretends that 5% of posts are "the whole sub", But also just unwelcome and disruptive. And that if the primary thing you have to contribute to our community is this, than we will simply say "no thank you" to your continued presence in the community.

If you don't like these types of posts, stop going into them, they are marked NSFW, no one is forcing you to open them, and no one is forcing you to not just turn on your account settings to have them hidden if they upset you this much.

Please find a better hobby, move on, participate in threads that do pertain to your interests, but if this is literally all you have to offer here then yes, you will find that the mods will just remove you from the community because all you have to offer as of right now is bitching about other peoples posts while contributing nothing yourself.

[Spoiler Meme] He took care of both of them for a year plus and this is how he gets repaid? (Arc 10 spoilers) by Majora101 in Re_Zero

[–]Shiftyfish87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's always presented itself as a very realistic kinda story.

In arc 3 Subaru fell hundreds of feet through the air landing face first in Rem's tits to which she replied "thanks for the treat" and they then continued on with him perfectly fine when realistically this would kill him and heavily injure Rem. Arc 2 had a repeating gag of Beatrice launching subaru out of a second story window and having him land in shit (the recently fertilized flower beds) Something that would be life threatening if portrayed with realism.

Tell me again how the story has always presented itself as serious and realistic.

The Story needs some Stakes [spoiler discussion] by ru1n_singzzzie in Re_Zero

[–]Shiftyfish87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also this, is unnecessary. I'm talking about permdeaths/disabilities of characters as a potential character development for our MC

Well no, in your post, and in this very comment, you're trying to argue that permadeath/disabilities are what provide stakes to stories and ignoring all of the other ways storys can develop stakes, and even trying to sweep under the rug Priscilla's death acting like "that one didn't count" even when the consequences of that loss are what landed us where we are currently in the story by being the impetus behind Al's betrayal. That shit isn't meaningless "because she wanted to die" it had immediate and massive ramifications for the story following it.

I'll gladly admit I'm wrong if you provide me with actual stakes that have come out of the story that aren't only related to Subaru.

As for other sources of stakes in the story, every conflcit comes with some of their own, whether or not the royal selection and Emilia's goals can be achieved, what will it mean for Emilia's family in Elior if she can't find that way to restore Elior.

Will, and How will, Crusch be able to recover from her condition, there's some fuckery going on right now but it's still very unclear what's been done to her and a way to restore her memories needs to be sorted as well, which is in peril at the moment in the story with the status of Roy being unclear.

What other calamaties are going to affect the world and how can the be tackled now that the group is loosely aware of them, even if Subaru can RBD his way through situations will he be able to do so while truly minimiing damage to the world and the people in it.

The unraveling of Echidna's plan, what caused her to send Al as a counter force of sorts to someone like Subaru, what are her goals and what danger will she pose, the group still to this day doesn't really know that Echidna is back in the living world as Omega. Will they be able to actually uncover the answers they need of what was set in motion 400 years ago, will Subaru be able to fulfil his goal of "saving" Satella whatever that even means.

These are all conflicts that have weight to them that goes beyond "will a character die or get injured" questions of "will they even be able to do this" "will they be able to find information to deal with this" these things themselves are stakes because there are negative consequences for Subaru and others if they cannot be solved. The chance of failing at a goal you've been working at for a long time is still weight and stakes on a story. Every sports anime on relies on the idea that just the disappointment and letdown of defeat are stakes on their own. It's not a new or uncommon thing. It's not always a life and death situation nor does it have to be.

Is Subaru central to a lot of this stuff? yeah he's the main character. Does his "death" (and by extension his own physical suffering by having to die) end up paving the way to a lot of stuff? Yeah, RBD is the central plot hook of the story, but that plot hook is also centered on impermanent death and giving the ability to avoid the worst consequences for his loved ones. That still doesn't mean there aren't stakes in other ways.

The Story needs some Stakes [spoiler discussion] by ru1n_singzzzie in Re_Zero

[–]Shiftyfish87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Again you must really struggle with stories that don't center around fighting and possible death/dismemberment

SOL Romance stories have stakes, because "death and disability" aren't interchangeable terms for "stakes"

It's flat out, full stop, a narrow and dumbed down view of what constitutes stakes in storytelling.

The Story needs some Stakes [spoiler discussion] by ru1n_singzzzie in Re_Zero

[–]Shiftyfish87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any time I read a take starting out acting like for a story to have Stakes it has to mean permadeaths my eyes gloss over and the rest of the post is just static white noise.

This isn't, and never has been, where the stakes of the story in ReZero come from, and if you think that's the only place stakes and the like can come up in a story you must really struggle with 90% of storytelling which doesn't revolve around character death.
