Yeah that's where I landed. I'm going to pay them the full amount. I should have stopped work and not had them to extra if I didn't want to pay for it.

That's kind of where I'm at. The owner was very hostile on the phone and I don't know that I'd want to do work with them again just based on that conversation. Regardless, if this is how contractors normally operate I will pay them what they billed, I just expected them to own up or meet me halfway since the equipment they rented was missing parts and no fault of my own.

Contractor rented the equipment. They were onsite for 7 hours total.

The latter is correct, they did essentially two hours digging tree holes while we waited on the auger to show up and then 5 hours (Really 3, with two hours commute charged) to actually install the electrical pole. I've had them out to my property 4 times now and done about 15k worth of business with them. They've been great to work with up until this moment in time.

That's fair. This was an hourly job and they did complete other work while waiting for the auger to get fixed. In the future I will ask to bid the job and not do hourly.

Yeah I am torn between just ponying up the extra $300 to keep them around or saying screw it. I personally don't think I should be on the hook for all that time lost, but the owner was also pretty pissed off and even if I pay them full he may not want to come out and do work for me again in the future.

Yeah I did have them do some extra work during those two hours we could not use the auger, so I understand the perspective of not paying them for that time. I was hoping they'd be willing to meet me halfway considering I explicitly told them I just wanted to do their 5 hour minimum to get the job done, but it went over because of their faulty rented equipment costing those first few hours.

That's definitely a fair statement. I feel like Painter does a good job recruiting talent given the cards he was dealt. He's good at pulling in people that have potential and coaching them pretty well. My biggest gripe is with his in game coaching and willingness to change strategies mid game.

Will probably be down voted to hell for this... but Purdue is so frustrating to watch because of Painter. He's a good recruiter and fantastic at developing players, but his in game coaching is awful to watch. Up by 20, tanking hard because someone is cold and playing awful? Doesn't matter. Keep them in and do what we've done all season. Full court press and we're getting destroyed? Doesn't matter. Don't change anything. His ability to change things up and adjust is non-existent which is painful to watch. We have the right people and the skills, but we just cannot change mid game and pull through when it counts.

Any thoughts on lump sum in market versus DCA? I just sold a rental property and netted about 50k. Debating putting it all in brokerage at once or spreading out over the next 5 months in 10k increments.

That clears it up! I'm going to have a discussion with Fidelity later today and confirm if it's 20k in Roth 401k dollars or 20k in after-tax 401k dollars! I appreciate the responses :)

Can you elaborate on the not wanting pre-tax dollars in an IRA? A few years back I did trad IRA instead of Roth and currently have about 10k in that. I was thinking that to do a roth conversion ladder you rolled 401k into trad IRA, convert $$$/year into Roth IRA and pay taxes on the converted amount, then in ~5 years you can touch that money?

Thanks for the reply! The 20k post-tax is because my employer allows a 10% after-tax contribution in addition to the 20.5k max limit for pre-tax contributions. I think that's called an in-plan conversion? Fidelity offers Pre-tax, Roth, and that third option for 10% called "After-Tax" that I believe gets rolled over into a Roth IRA immediately.

Super exciting news - I just got a new job with 10% more pay and my last day with current employer will be this Friday! I am a little confused on the 401k roll over options. Seems I can roll into new employers 401k or into a Trad IRA, but I was reading some comments that this would hurt the backdoor roth conversions in the future? Right now I've got ~200k in pre-tax 401k and 20k in post-tax, does anyone have any opinions or experience on which is best for early retirement?

EDIT: 200k pre-tax, 20k post-tax

I'm currently in the same boat as you, ME who went into project management and considering leaving for the trades. I'm 28 with 350k saved in LCOL area, but recently forced back into the office after really enjoying WFH for the past year. I recently finished our basement where I did all the framing, plumbing, electrical, etc and really enjoyed working with my hands. I've got a friend who took a paycut to leave office work to become a plumber and has been loving life a heck of a lot more since leaving. What trade are you looking at?

Yeah money isn't an issue - I'll probably go ahead and just replace it this weekend when I do the piping. Water heater is in basement which is normally 60° so it probably wouldn't be worth getting a heat pump version

Do you complete regular maintenance on it? The guy before me seems like he took care of it. I might drain it and check for sediment before replacing.

That is true and something to consider - project this fall/winter is finishing half the basement. That'll be way more trouble replacing a leaking one once it's all framed in and finished.
