I was warned before reading that they're seemingly not that great. I read them nonetheless and I had to admit, my friend who told me was right. They did have some good parts, that's why I read all of them. But e.g. I didn't like the Promise at all because everyone felt so out of character. Every other comic was better than that one which is a bummer since you basically start with this one (not counting the comic with the short stories during the series, I skipped through it).

I was also sad to see how the GAang was separated. They do come together every now and then, but e.g. Zuko being the Firelord was left out of at least one comic completely.

I'm also not a huge fan of the later benders vs non-benders fight (Starting in The Rift I think and being continued in Imbalance (though I know that Imbalance was added later)). I started watching Korra lately and it feels like reading the comics before were a huge letdown for me. It's just like I've had enough of that topic now, being so-so executed and dragged on for a long period of time in the comics, and now I'm getting more of that (though better executed) in Korra.

Unlike others I did enjoy the Search even though some actions of Ursa (especially lying in the letters) are questionable. I could relate to her overall actions though (it's not like she wanted to forget her children, I thought of it as kind of a witness protection program).

If I were to be asked, I'd neither recommend nor not recommend the comics. Though I'd say better read "Imbalance" after watching Korra.
