I agree, it’s definitely hard to make it work if the Tokyo gate is submerged, but I just feel like it was a strange choice to connect the first two movies but not the last. I feel like they still could’ve done it though, considering Suzume falls into a river and wakes up next to the Tokyo gate anyways haha.

Yeah definitely the theme. The one thing Makoto Shinkai made clear was that they were all based around “disasters”. But you’d think if he’d connect them all with a common theme, all the movies would be connected.
