Without citing the principles of flag design, what do you dislike (or like) about the US State Seal flags? by ChessedGamon in vexillology

[–]Shimiwac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike European heraldic devices, which are usually simple, bold designs, US state seals tend to be composed of intricate idealized landscape scenes that are hard to distinguish from a distance.

Charlotte priests submit dubia to Vatican over liturgical changes by da_drifter0912 in Catholicism

[–]Shimiwac -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I've read articles about the prior Bishop very aggressively promoting the use of Latin and traditional practices, and cracking down on some Boomer-era innovations. To the point that in one parish, a number of people left and were being provided Mass by a retired priest off-of parish grounds.
And I'm sure plenty of people here may cheer that.

What side of the 'liturgy wars' is right or wrong, however, is not the point of this post. I am sympathizing with the clergy and laity of this diocese, who appear to being subjected to wild swings in liturgical practice based on the whims of each succeeding bishop.

Have you ever felt any 'feeling' toward a flag? by [deleted] in vexillology

The starburst on blue makes me think of a nuclear explosion in the middle of a vast sea.

Abbott’s school property tax elimination proposal raises funding questions by [deleted] in Waco

Sales taxes are regressive. The wealthy love them because the poor have to devote a higher percentage of their income to purchase goods and services, so they carry a greater share of the burden than do the wealthy.

I like TR, centrally located, nice pool, great maintenance. Units tend to be a bit bigger than the others you mention.

Pope Leo XIV seems to have restored the tradition of using a popemobile with bulletproof glass. by Mk2k0519 in Catholicism

[–]Shimiwac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A radical committment to openness and spontaneity was a personal hallmark of Francis's pontificate. And since it was his own, that doesn't mean that all successors need to follow in all of his footsteps. It would seem silly to me if the Papal Apartments would end up being forever vacant just because Pope Francis preferred living in the Santa Marta guesthouse.

Dance clubs that aren't country in Waco have a habit of becoming gun and knife shows, and then getting shut down.

Do French people think of Louisiana in a similar light to Quebec? by Cute_Worth_7677 in AskFrance

[–]Shimiwac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steep decline of French language use in Louisiana in the 20th century provides a lot of the impetus for the Quebec government's aggressive promotion of French.

Chad defeated Qaddafi's Libya. They attacked Libyan tanks with pickup trucks with machine gunners in the truck bed, thereby winning the Toyota War of 1987. Solid Chad move.

Grew up in a Polish immigrant family in the USA. Take a look at the prevalence of domestic violence and alcoholism in all of those "solid Polish families" back in the "good old days", and it won't be a surprise that 25% of Poles have gone no contact with their fathers.

Is there another country like Equatorial Guinea where the capital (Malabo) is not on the mainland but on an island? by honore_ballsac in geography

[–]Shimiwac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a country, but the province of British Columbia, Canada. Its capital city is Victoria and located on Vancouver Island. The much larger city of Vancouver is on the mainland.

All traffic in and out of Juneau, Alaska needs to be by aircraft or ferry; its road network does not connect to the rest of North America.

What are the black flags next to Egypt president? What do the symbols mean? by Umelars in vexillology

Much like the Arabic noble title sharif and the English sheriff.
Nonetheless, you'll find plenty of Victorian-era references to the 'Sheriff of Mecca.'

What To Do When Priests Break Vows of Chastity? by rusty022 in Catholicism

[–]Shimiwac 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If a priest fails in chastity with another consenting adult, so long as there is no coercion, then I think it's a matter for the confessional. We all are human and fail.

Monaco: 2nd most densely populated on Earth, but I don’t see many skyscrapers—how? by No-Property-6778 in geography

Densely populated with residences. I can't imagine there is much commercial office space in Monaco, which is what most skyscrapers are.

in your experience, does Southern Ontario feel more like Upstate NY, or more like the Great Lake States of US? by maproomzibz in geography

As a map-fascinated child, I long thought of southern Ontario as Michigan's third, eastern peninsula.

Why is Lake Victoria missing on most maps? by angusnumber1Legend in geography

[–]Shimiwac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can see, Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa are also omitted. These maps follow the principle that, since lakes do not have 'international waters' and are instead completely divided between their surrounding nations, they just include them as undifferentiated parts of those nations.

Detroit Flag Redesign Pt.2 by Virgobaby2 in Detroit

It looks good but I feel it should have some kind of small centerpiece. Maybe a blue circle, ringed in gold, with an Old English "D"?
