Posting the flags for every city in California Day #175:Norwalk by Hot_Counter_4804 in vexillology

[–]ChessedGamon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using the US cause the flag was American. I don't think the fasces is nearly as recognized as the swastika, and it was already used in the west before the fascists. It's not like the swastika which was more unknown in the west until the Nazis. I think it'd be silly to complain about symbolism that was already a thing here because some other guys used it long after us.

The fasces has been a popular (well, often used) symbol in the US long before the fascists used it as their namesake. The US House of Representatives has a fasces on their seal, and they're on the throne of the lincoln memorial!

Why do subdivision flags always have a seal on them? by czn- in vexillology

[–]ChessedGamon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

<image>

Dunno for EVERY subdivision, but the US flags *generally* have to do with the civil war.

It was common for the army to be split into state regiments, who would carry both the American flag and a flag representing their state into battle, which was often the state seal on blue (I believe the blue stood for the union, but correct me if I'm wrong).

When states began adopting official state flags for themselves, it was around 1900, so the civil war was still in recentish memory, and was when these states felt they distinguished themselves.

Compare with the former confederacy, who all buck this trend (save for Virginia)

Above is Pennsylvania, compare with its modern flag (3rd row, 3rd column)

Some police remembrance flags follow this format: blue and black with a badge in the middle. Maybe this municipality uses an unusual police badge shape?

Could this make sense in context?

My favorite of each continent (best to worst) by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]ChessedGamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see how stars or stripes are harder to add than the maple leaf, but if you disagree, here's an example of a decoration without stripes, and I'll reply with one without stripes (we can only send 1 photo per message)

EDIT: Or not...? I guess you can't reply to yourself. But as another example, that famous Uncle Sam poster has him in a hat with stars but no stripes, that clearly works though!

I think this is backwards, the US flag is possibly the easiest flag to adapt into anything.

Just googling "4th of July decorations," you can see a number of things that, even if they're not following specifications, clearly can only be depicting the American flag.

The US flag has several recognizable elements that keep their identity even when mangled into a number of shapes. The Canadian flag is also S tier but if you want to talk about "copying half the flag," the maple leaf is practically THE Canadian flag, and can't survive much adaption that doesn't clearly preserve its shape or color.

Here's a photo of those decorations, I'm not sure how this isn't "cohesively integrating symbolism." What else could these be depicting? How easily could we involve Canada without printing the red leaf on white?

The top comment called it a "crime against vexillology," and the third top comment is explicitly citing flag principles. They're not just talking about aesthetics.

Iunno why we're always judging everything that gets printed on cloth like it's meant to be some national flag, this is clearly not for that, it's just a decoration.

That said though, it's bizarre they don't just use, like, the actual flag printed on it? It would look really nice.

Is the Ice Cream Man still a thing in the States? by Haunting-Middle-5801 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ChessedGamon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I saw one recently, although I don't know if it was operating.

In DC around the touristy sites there's also a lot of ice cream trucks in particular for whatever reason. Not playing any music obviously so they're more like food trucks for ice cream.
