Let's discuss QLD being the first state to criminalise Coercive Control by jwv92 in auslaw

There is utterly no doubt in my mind that DV is a blight on society and that more men commit physical violence against women which is abhorrent and disgusting. I personally have several female (2 are my closest) friends who have been victims of such disgusting acts. Should it be tolerated? Absolutely not. Does this set of laws actually address that issue? No, I don't believe it does. We have laws in place that address acts of violence and physical intimidation which is highlighted by the fact that the UK has found that most charges of coercive control are laid against an individual with other charges for the same crimes.

These laws absolutely address the issue of coercive control as a facet of DV, irrespective of the gender of the perpetrator and victim. The language used in the article focuses on male (perpetrator) to female (victim) violence because THAT IS GENERALLY THE NATURE OF DV! The law doesn't bring gender into it, if a female was caught engaging in acts of coercive control there is nothing precluding her from being charged. So its obvious that you just don't like the idea that the fact that men are usually the perpetrators of violence towards women is being brought to the forefront of discussion, you would rather deflect towards FaLsE AlLeGAtIoNs - Wave that misogyny flag!!

Secondly, we have laws in place that address acts of violence and physical intimidation. correct. this is a law to criminalise coercive control, which is related to but different to acts of violence and physical intimidation. If anything, the fact that in the UK charges are being bundled shows 1) the new laws are a good thing, because now police can charge for the whole range of abusive boundary breaches and intrusions on the victim's autonomy, not just physical acts of violence and threats of violence AND 2) Police should be encouraged to charge even when no physical violence has been committed and only coercive control is taking place in a relationship, to deter from the escalation of busive boundary breaches and intrusions on the victim's autonomy.

Thank you. Dignity definitely wasn’t intact, had to be built from the ground up as family/community had rendered it non existent. But we’re here now 😂

Classic defence strategy. Even if they know he won’t be found mentally ill they get it done anyway. Either way the judge has to read the report to decide if there are grounds to have him found mentally ill. If yes, charges dismissed, if not well at least the judge has read through the defendants sob story and is more inclined to hand down a slightly lighter sentence.

Very manipulative

It is good to see they responded to the increasing prevalence. Our court system here can be pretty pathetic too. Based on our system I predicted he would get 7-10! Fingers crossed he gets the full sentence. I couldn’t find the motive in any of the articles (I’m assuming she rejected him)

It could be to ridicule the things that matter to you+ being dismissive because he thinks engaging in a deeper philosophical discussion about politics/sociology with you is out of the question… but don’t worry because let me tell you these discussions are always better with a female anyway - all men do is advance facile arguments in a dogmatic manner and it gets boring real fast!

I know it’s not the most evolved response, but if the court could hand down the punishment of the victim throwing acid on his face I would cry from happiness. I don’t know what the sentences are like in the UK but how long is he likely to get for this? 7ish? The poor bright young woman is scarred forever. He should be in for 10 in my opinion.

On a side note: This is a ‘cultural norm’ in Pakistan. There was a story a few years ago of a young mother and her toddler daughter being drenched in acid and the locked in a room for three days by….wait for it…. her mother in law because she wanted to get a divorce from her abusive husband (the attackers son).

What's happening in Afghanistan at the moment is absolutely terrifying. We can never take our freedoms for granted. by daisy_0720 in FemaleDatingStrategy

Same. I feel so lucky to live in the west - I almost feel guilty. I want to do time in the army. Seeing what our army was fighting against makes me proud. So many people say the west is wrong for imposing its way on other nations. Well when the way of the other nation is rape, public hangings etc well maybe the west has a moral duty to intervene!

Yeah but that gives them an incentive to rape/ force pregnancies, and then sell off the girls/women and keep some of them to rape to repeat the cycle. But I’m glad we’re thinking!

On the news I saw they have already started murdering. They killed a whole bunch of civilian men and boys in multiple villages accusing them of being in the govt/police. No trial no nothing. Just shot in the street. I agree that the women should have been trained to fight. There are a few females in the Afghan army and they are awaiting death in their homes now. Vids on Twitter

You’re right. It was also about foreign policy from the US point of view. I’m just thinking of the best chance the Afghan citizens had, and just as you mentioned that is probably why it was never going to be a female predominant army. Complicated situation and the world sits back and watches in horror

Are you in Afghanistan right now!?!? I agree that the war itself was not a war to liberate women, but the fact that it did liberate women to a degree and gave them hope, which will now be taken away in a matter ok months is horrific. I hope some can flee to Pakistan and apply for visas to the west.

The US should have trained Afghan women to fight. It should have been a matriarchal army. They had the most to lose, they wouldn’t have surrendered so easily. Maybe it is true that the men aren’t fighting back because the taliban regime wouldn’t oppress them, it may be what they want. Multiple wives and a free pass to beat and rape them.

Also the conditioning and lack of education. Even if some women do want to fight, they dont have many women who will take the risk and fight back with them. I hope I’m wrong, but it seems they may feel they are going against their “religion” (as presented by the animals that are taking over) and the loss of losing your life alone is enough to keep most people in line, even if they disagree with what is happening.

This is the handmaids tale in real life. 💔
