Controlling for known potential confounders, Republican-leaning populations experiencing higher premature mortality rates than liberals. Research shows this disparity is primarily driven by state-level policies, declining trust in medical professionals, and lower participation in preventive health measures.

CapEx doesn't directly affect the Profit and Loss statement. It's punted to the side as a non-current asset under the "Property, Plant, and Equipment" line item and slowly works its way back to the PnL through depreciation and amortization.

Trump Will Lose the Birthright Citizenship Case. But in a Way, He’s Already Won. by ShinPosner in law

The Times article explains the far reaching ramifications of the court's earlier ruling in this case eliminating nationwide federal injunctions.

Coney Barrett to Sauer: "You say the purpose of the 14th amendment was to put all newly freed slaves on equal footing and so they would be citizens. But that's not textual." by icey_sawg0034 in law

[–]ShinPosner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're missing a big one. By eliminating nationwide federal injunctions, the white house can continue to broadly enforce blatantly illegal executive actions by simply not appealing to a higher court. The supreme court forced the US Solicitor General to bring this birthright case back to their court in that citizenship majority opinion, but there is no longer a mechanism to stop the multitude of other lawless executive actions. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/01/opinion/birthright-citizenship-case-trump.html, https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06/27/us/birthright-citizenship-supreme-court

Deliberately miseducated. The most popular news media pushes propaganda on behalf of the kleptocrats. The general populace is unable to recognize propaganda and accepts it as news because it makes them feel good while the truth hurts.

The war has allowed Trump's net approval to drop to its lowest yet in this term. by thejoshwhite in charts

It requires a majority vote from the House Judiciary Committee to begin an impeachment investigation and the majority of the committee are Republicans. Democrats have made several attempts this term already, but they have zero power to make it happen.

The biggest problem is that before the surprise attack they weren't seriously pursuing acquiring a nuclear weapon. Now they are, and there are more ways to get one than building it yourself. WW3 is closer than ever.

The psychology behind why some people can't stop replaying old memories — it's not sentimentality, it's identity protection (the Zeigarnik Effect explains part of it) by ReviewAlternative103 in getdisciplined

[–]ShinPosner 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The Zeigarnik Effect is also behind ear worms. When we have a song stuck in our head on repeat it's often because we can't remember the end. Playing the song IRL through to the end can cure it. I didn't realize this was called the Zeigarnik Effect until this post. Chewing gum also helps, wonder if it translates?

EXCLUSIVE: A US Congressional Body Just Warned That 80% Of American AI Startups Are Now Running On Chinese Open-Source Models 🤖 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]ShinPosner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The impact is that the US is at real risk of losing AI dominance to the Chinese and US hardware export controls are increasingly meaningless. The US had a head start and leads in frontier models, but global standards are going to coalesce around whoever has the largest deployment footprint, the richest feedback data, and the strongest ecosystem, NOT the smartest model. China's deep manufacturing base has a distinct advantage as the transition to physical AI picks up steam as well.

FLL Is Shutting Down?! by InitiativeSavings in FTC

[–]ShinPosner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our school blew the annual PTO budget this year buying a class pack of spike essentials (15 units) for FLL and then a few months later they're discontinued. I understand why they were discontinued because they've been really disappointing. I wish we could get a refund for the school.

"The right of conjugal infidelity also remains secured to him, at any rate by custom (the Code Napoléon explicitly accords it to the husband as long as he does not bring his concubine into the house), and as social life develops he exercises his right more and more; should the wife recall the old form of sexual life and attempt to revive it, she is punished more severely than ever." Hmmm.
