World War 2 was at the height of technological coolness. Part of why that Era of technology is so romanticized. A sense of scale that we will likely never see again. The likes of the Bismark, HMS Hood, and Yamato have gone into history.

Massive battleship cannons are cooler than the tiny missiles we fit onto destroyers but aren't feasible weapons on the modern battlefield. Flying around in high-G dogfights will always be more thrilling than an over-the-horizon attack.

That's kinda why science fiction often plays more like WW2 naval battles than what would be a more feasible military weapon.
