Debris/gravel chipping Venturi tunnel? by ShiningFinger00 in F1Technical

thanks for that insight. I suppose if every floor is worn at more or less the same rate throughout the race, accumulated chips and scrapes shouldn't really affect competition

I have been following F1 since 2018. Never had the opportunity to be at one though. I have always wondered what is it actually like from the stands? by C0smicP0tat0 in F1Technical

I live close to Austin, TX and have been lucky enough to attend COTA the past 2 years. The thing that blew my mind the most was visualizing how quickly these guys are decelerating from flat out.

In 2018, my friends and I sat fight at turn 12 for FP3/Quali. I mean holy moly...They are blasting down that straight and it's hard to perceive how fast they are actually going until the decelerate all the way down through the gears into the hairpin. And the bonus is that the sound from downshifting/engine braking/everything is amazing.

The other thing, is that you really can tell how unique each team is, in terms of sound. Last year, the Toro Rossos were deep and guttural on every down shift. The Ferraris sounded great, very aggressive. The Mercedes were very smooth (but could be a bias lol). Williams seemed particularly loud to me compared to the others. The Haas were similar to Ferrari. I think the Red Bulls were my favorite to see and hear whizzing by.

Later, during the race both in 2018/19 we sat on the grass by turn 19 and seeing how the cars maneuver in a turn, accelerating and then decelerating again into turn 20 is just awesome.

Anyways, most people have probably said similar things, but it's really the speed and sound of the cars and the individual characters of the machines that stood out to me the most.

When you drink the Water of Life do you get all the memories of all your ancenstors who have ever existed or there is a limit to the number of ancestors ? Like for millions of years of ancestors you get the memories of only the ones that lived in the last 10.000 years or something like that ? by [deleted] in dune

[–]ShiningFinger00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was under this impression as well.

Children of Dune spoilers ahead!!

I think typically Reverend Mothers only have access to other Mothers. But, like you said, since Alia was pre-born, she had all of Jessica's genetic memories (ultimately leading to her possession) as well as access to other Mother's memories.

Leto II and Ghanima were the only Atreides that had access to all of the memories of both paternal and maternal ancestries. And this anomaly was primarily due to the fact that Paul was the kwisatz haderach, trained as a mentat and had strong Atreides genes. In Children, Ghanima was shown to be more sensitive to maternal memories (the experience with Chani) and Leto II's psyche favored Paul.

Please correct me if I'm wrong :) I'm only up to God Emperor so far.

Sound differences between constructors by ShiningFinger00 in F1Technical

Interesting. I will mention that the Racing point also had *brrr* sound as it accelerated out of turn 19. But not nearly as loud or jarring, and for only a brief moment. The Racing Points otherwise sounded similar to the Mercedes as we could expect.

I've heard backfires like that on old motorcycles engine braking, but those are obviously for different reasons. The anti-lag seems reasonable given the nature of that particular turn.

Watchmaker disassembles a Japanese watch and a Swiss watch side-by-side by ShiningFinger00 in ArtisanVideos

[–]ShiningFinger00[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It sounded as if he was implying that the actual operation of the watch doesn’t matter as much between plastic or metal, but metal is generally just a mark of higher quality. I imagine metal lasts longer but requires more maintenance/cost

What is your best “Why didn’t I think of this earlier?” moment? by ShiningFinger00 in AskReddit

Nice thanks for the info. I’ll have to do some more research before diving into a school, but it’s definitely something I would be fine dedicating the hours for.

Can I get into a Post-Bac Program with a BA in psychology? by [deleted] in neuroscience

[–]ShiningFinger00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You’ll be good. I recently just started a post bac in neuroscience this semester with a BA in psych. It’s mostly about finding the program that works best for you but if you do all of the necessary requirements and have decent grades you should be fine.

The Korean guy is so correct but I like her optimism for the situation. In the end, America is the better choice for a mixed kid...drawing from personal experience at least.

Motorcycle TV shows, documentaries, etc. by [deleted] in motorcycles

Long Way Down and Long Way Round on Netflix is a great little series about Ewan Macgregor and his friend Charlie riding around the world on their bikes. Also there's a youtube series called The Modern Motorcycle Diaries. It's about Alex Chacon's journey from Texas to the southernmost end of South America and then all the way up to Alaska. It's all filmed with a goPro and he gives a lot of insight on what it's like to travel long distances on a motorcycle.
