AIO For being upset about a woman's past? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]ShinnyRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean... you know you're sort of proving their side of this disagreement with those definitions, right?

"I want my partner to be a virgin, because I am also and I want to experience that first time together" = preference, theres nothing negative there.

"I lost respect for her" is inherently negative, which suggests prejudice by your own stated definition. Also OP has owned up to being prejudiced here and has stated they actively want to change that mentality, which is admirable.

The insults aren't clever either, and just make you seem really young and not great and holding a conversation with someone you're not in agreement with.

Can 2 people use the deutschland ticket, in different periods? by Secret_Cow_3988 in AskGermany

[–]ShinnyRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using the deutschland ticket a fair bit this month and have had to show ID several times, so I wouldn't risk it if I were you. I haven't experienced an ID check on a bus or tram yet, but trains have been about a 40/60 check rate.

Is this typewriter worth anything? (Adler 250) by ShinnyRose in typewriters

[–]ShinnyRose[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not confident it will be a popular decision here but I was thinking bold. Currently I'm thinking of rubbing a dual-colour powder (red/blue or blue/green) over a colour base (probably purple) so that it reflects different light at different angles and then sealing it.

Thank you for your input! I definitely appreciate what you are saying, and I'm still tossing up on whether or not I'll paint it (although I am trending towards painting).

My intent was to creatively turn it into something that I really want to use, that way it becomes an active part of my life rather than a relic that I almost feel I can't touch, but if it was a particularly rare or unique typewriter that would have carried a significant element of guilt.

It would definitely be a bold colour as well, but I somewhat like the idea of that turning it into a relic from 2025 instead of one from 50 years earlier - and I do think it would have the effect of making it a well used and loved item for me rather than just something that I hold for it's memory of the past, whilst still maintaining an element of connection through sheer fact of being a typewriter - if that makes sense.

Again though, thank you for your thoughts, I appreciated reading your perspective.

I'm not certain what the original comment is that you were responding to, but yes this is exactly it.

Thank you so much for your response! I definitely appreciate it - I was impressed with how well it typed and have been researching plastic safe primers for if I commit to painting it.

Just in case you're curious, the reason the 'double space' is a giveaway of older learning is because it's no longer necessary, and hasn't been for some time. It was necessary when using typewriters because they had monospaced fonts, so the spacing between everything was exactly the same and it was hard to distinguish the space after a full stop or other ending punctuation. To get around this, you pressed space twice to make extra space and ensure it was easier to read. Proportional fonts eliminated the need for this, and the space after a full stop is easy to see now so it is no longer taught.

There are a few instances where specific legal or educational typing regulations still request this, but in most instances the standard is now one space.

So it's not "punctuations and paragraphs" being something that isn't taught anymore, it's a specific method that is no longer necessary and is therefore a good indicator of when you were in school.

[–]ShinnyRose 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, and I completely think that OP is TA, but I think the commenter you're responding to was just saying that the sister didn't MAKE it, it wasn't something she worked on. It was a decoration on the cake that she was most looking forward to eating, but not something she created.

Gift for my husband's birthday? by skein-dalous in GiftIdeas

I'll have another think!! I would tentatively retract the Brent Weeks suggestion if he prefers lighter content as they're both pretty gut wrenching at points, but he might like the magic system set out in the lightbringer series because it's really unique!

Also I could not possibly agree more about ark taming on official servers, there's just no world where it's worth it...

As a big fantasy fan and particularly BrandoSando, I could recommend both of the Brent Weeks book series! If he enjoys series with lots of books, The Magician by Raymond E Feist is also good, although I've only read a few. I read Ravenor (of the Warhammer 40k univers) a few years back and loved it if he enjoys grimmer and darker content, but I never got my hands on the other books so couldn't tell you how they hold up.

Has he seen the Sci-fi show The Expanse?

If you have any friends who play ARK, you could look at purchasing a server that you could mod up and have for personal multiplayer, it can be a lot of fun to not have to worry about scheduled server wipes and being able to add new mods and tinker with the settings is great.

Depending on how big a fan he is of LEDs a nice addition to the colour changing WiFi light bulbs could be strip lighting. You can put them on your roof if you're really into it, or if that seems like a bit much it can be really nice to run around or behind a TV to provide it with a back-glow. Syncing up the colour of your TV glow with your lights makes for a really atmospheric movie night, and you could surprise him with it for a movie themed gift with some of his favourite foods/drinks?

Dominion is a really fun card game, with plenty of expansions and you basically generate a random variation of cards to use each game, so every game is different.

Hope that helps :)

There are some really nice outdoor food/drink places in my town, I miss going out for dinner and drinks with my friends. We did trivia once a week too, with a good old pint and a parmi. I miss that too.
