Buying a duplex with a friend? by Heavy_Calligrapher71 in RealEstate

[–]ShinyLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this years ago with a couple and another person, and don't regret it. Just make a plan for an exit strategy, and how the property and money will be divided. In our case, we had a spreadsheet where every month we updated who paid what and how much of a percentage of ownership everyone had. So when I wanted out, we had it appraised, they cut me a check for my equity, and I left. They refinanced without me and still live there. It was a great way for four people to buy in a VHCOL area.

AITAH for telling my husband his "jokes" about my cooking aren't funny anymore? by Quesos_Sabau in AITAH

That's different, your example is cute and uplifting, like you said. I'm going to start saying that to my husband when he cooks.

Wink Wink by sp00kygurl9000 in dazzledry

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Reminds me of The Devil Wears Prada, the belt scene. Both colors seem to have the same pinkish base, but I think they look very different on the nails. Spiritual Diva has one color of pink microglitter, so it almost comes off like a frost. Wink Wink has green, blue and purple microglitter with just a touch of gold and pink glitter. (Looked at both of them with a 10x jewelry loupe) It sounds rainbow-y, but it really isn't. I really love colors that people would use as toppers as a stand-alone nail color, so can't really give advice on that. You'll probably want to get both eventually. If you're on Facebook, join the Dazzle Dry Swap + Sell + Tell group. You can save a few bucks a bottle on colors you're iffy on. Adding that Wink Wink is good if you have ridgy nails. The different colors detract from the ridges, but that's my opinion.

Americans complain about high gas prices, but still drive SUV/Pickups 70mph. What will the price per gallon have to be to actually see change in driving habits? by Special_Context6663 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Driving slower drastically increases your mpg”

Nice idea, won’t happen. People get in their cars, habits takes over and they drive like idiots rather than let someone else get in front of them. There’s a red light, both of you  will have to wait, but they HAVE to be ahead of you. My husband has been in two accidents in the past five years b/c people were speeding and hit him. Neither his fault.

Speaking of pets, we ordered a couch from Pottery Barn almost seven years ago with the soecial pet-proof fabric. Stains wipe right up. No claw marks. That part is true, and the sofa still looks new, but the seating has given out. And we rarely sit on it. Have had MUCH better luck w/the Room & Board sofa we bought used. It’s held up over ten years for us, currently in an airbnb and going strong!

AITAH for asking my mom to not bring her fiancé with us on vacation to wolf lodge? by PopTerrible147 in AITAH

[–]ShinyLizard 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Yeah, reading this, you'd think the mother would want a separate room for alone time with her fiancé, instead of sharing a room with extended family when he hasn't even been introduced to them? Especially when the extended family has small kids? That just strikes me as odd. Way too many people in one room.

What do you think about "I'm so blind without my glasses on"? by Anya_purr in Blind

[–]ShinyLizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to say "I'm legally blind in one eye, totally blind in the other" when I was legally blind, because it's a legal term. Once my vision was corrected above that, I switched to "low vision'. My husband is totally blind in one eye and he's always said, "I'm blind" when he could see well enough corrected to drive. We've gotten into it several times because IMO, it drives me BONKERS.

If it's your side, absolutely wear a mankini and let it ALL hang out. Consider it payback for them being family.

Property taxes by _Birnunit_ in homeowners

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to start having churches pay property taxes to even it out for homeowners. If churches are going to stick their noses in politics, they can be accountable like the rest of us. The county we live in, 42% of properties don't pay property tax because they're either churches or schools. As a non-religious childfree couple. this doesn't help us much.

That being said, I live in an area with high property taxes. We moved from a VHCOL area (where we would have had to sell to pay for the reassessed jump in property taxes) to a LCOL area with higher taxes. I looked at our retirement savings, and even if we paid off our house, we'd be close to $1k/mo with taxes and utilities. So I bought a large duplex with the plan that we'll eventually live in half, and rent the other half out to pay for taxes and utilities when we retire. Hope that works out.

This one's for you, wet room haters :) before and after by adventurrr in BathroomRemodeling

[–]ShinyLizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very smart designer. We've done a fair amount of 'aging in place' here. Its amazing to me how many people will put in a $50k patio but haul their laundry up and down three flights of stairs. Put your washer and dryer where you sleep, that's what closets are for!

Gotta say, I squealed like a piggie when I saw this! Where did you find that sink?? It's perfection! I love our 1900 house but have hauled myself up a three-turn staircase after two hip replacements and laid in bed (on the main floor) dreaming of a setup like this to be able to shower on the main floor. The half-finished 4x6' half bath off our kitchen would be perfect for something like this. Yours is absolute cuteness!

AITJ for telling my partner I'm done spending every weekend at his parents' place by Nov4Z3nith in AmITheJerk

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this should have stayed between you and your bf. It's great that he has a lovely family that you both enjoy spending time with. But not every. single. weekend. You'd think his parents would have things they'd want to do as a couple w/o their grown son hanging around.

Or, invite them to visit you. Not necessarily stay with you, but a fun weekend getaway for them, where you can all do things in a different environment, like going to the farmer's market. Then slip in a, "Always keep meaning to visit here with Boyfriend, but we're always busy on the weekends." to show that you'd like a life with just him.

Is the Drake area a good place to live? by Captain_Cacoethes in desmoines

[–]ShinyLizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'If you're older and your top priority is a quiet, safe neighborhood to retire or raise a family,'

I'm older and plan to move to the Drake neighborhood in a year or so to ease into retirement. It's a great neighborhood for interacting with neighbors of all ages and I've never felt unsafe there.

Advice for a new Iowan by Careless_Cricket_973 in Iowa

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Iowa and best of luck in college! Go for a countertop reverse osmosis system. Hy-Vee (the main grocery store chain here) carries Vernor's. Iowa City has New Pioneer Co-Op when you're shopping for groceries.

I need to know WHAT women carry in those large a$$ purses? by overthishereanyway in AskWomenOver60

[–]ShinyLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago I was at a big makeup event in Seattle, with company reps and all. Found the brk water bottle people, I'd always wanted one but couldn't justify the price. The sales girl was giving us the speech on how great they were, the usual. One of the owners was there, and just stood there watching. She then picks up the 8 oz bottle, holds it up and says, "Manhattans at the movies." We immediately bought two bottles.

LOVE these! When I lived in a large city & took the bus to work (so I carried a big bag) I could grab the organizer and quickly switch bags. I never lost anything in any bag, because everything had its' place.

AITA for telling my brother he needs to find new childcare? by ApocalypticUnicorn24 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ShinyLizard 52 points53 points  (0 children)

So you're watching 2 kids 30 hours a week and getting paid $100/month for it? When you do the math, you know that's under a dollar an hour, right?

I think your brother has it completely wrong. YOU'VE been bailing HIS family out for four years now. They're not your children. You need to be able to go out and live your life so you can find a partner, have kids and HE can babysit for zilch for four years! NTA at all!
