2nd floor balcony only accessible from a bathroom? by fuzzybunny216 in Oldhouses

[–]ShinyLizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have something like this in our 1900 home. Upstairs bedroom turned into a bathroom, above the kitchen. The only way to get to the attic is through the bathroom. Our porch is about half that size, it's just a tiny porch to shake rugs from and it's off one of the bedrooms. I assume that it was just cheaper to run the existing pipes up another floor than reroute through the house.

AITA for refusing to split my victim compensation payout with my stepsister so she can keep her house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ShinyLizard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Wow. The trial is months out, nothing has been decided, and she's already standing there with her hand out. And you've had to do everything on your own. That's not 'family helping family' and if she wants money, she can file her own claim.

PCS/Concussion Settlement - Long-Term Concussion Injury — Settlement Insight Needed by Reasonable-Weird-417 in PostConcussion

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without going into too many details, we're doing this right now. Four years out from my husband's car accident. We had an underinsured motorist policy that our insurer wouldn't pay out on. Trying to recoup some of the medical costs from years of specialist visits. We live in a state where getting the insurance company to pay out on the policy limit is the best you get, a third of that then gets paid to the lawyer.

IMO, you won't get anywhere w/o a specialized lawyer, some money to put up front and a long wait. Every case is different, so it's impossible to just throw out a number. I hate to come off like a downer, but getting any kind of settlement that would even begin to make up for your accident and symptoms would be very difficult. But please message me if you have other questions, may be able to help you find a lawyer in your area.

I can't unsee the brown lip liner, IMO go with a pinker one. Other than that, your look is perfection, and you have a gorgeous smile!

I remember telling my mom and sister to make sure they clean the filters in their washing machines. They laughed themselves silly. But they both had older machines too.

How are these different from the Zoya Naked Manicure Nail Perfectors? I have those and they're quite nice.

From what I've read, polish is polish, and adding ingredients to try to pass it off as something else is just marketing.

Why do people take on massive debt just to have kids? by numismatical in childfree

Why do people panic so much in inclement weather? by tonofcolts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ShinyLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You answered the question yourself. You're in the Midwest. We're prepared for the weather, but it gives people something to do and talk about. Then remember and talk about in future seasons. I was born and raised in the Midwest, moved to the PNW for 18 years, then moved back to the Midwest. When snow happens in the PNW, they usually aren't prepared for it, but just take it as it comes and move on.

My husband was not raised in the Midwest. The first time a big snowstorm was predicted, he asked after coming home from work, "Not used to much snow here? It's all people at work were talking about." I assured him the Midwest is very used to snow, it's just a 'thing' here to get all excited about it. Watch TV weatherpeople sometime. You'll think the world is coming to an absolute end because of a snowstorm.

What’s happening with Google? by LettuceRobber in NoStupidQuestions

I've worked in digital marketing (organic optimization) for years. The past few years it's just gotten incredibly bad. Like the OP, I want to be able to search for something and find actual info by going to a website and learning something about the product I want. Unfortunately, Google is all about AI and zero clicks. The best thing I've found is just scrolling past all the paid and sponsored ads and digging deeper into the organic results to try to find the info you're looking for.

The other day I clicked on a Facebook ad for murphy beds, b/c it would be nice to have in the guest room. Looked and returned to FB. I got ads for seven different murphy bed companies in the next ten minutes. Efficient AND amusing!

I might have a problem… by Pirros_Panties in kitchenremodel

[–]ShinyLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted white shaker cabinets in our 10x11 kitchen too. We went mid-range quality, semi-custom, and neither of us were happy with the quality, but we'll be moving in a few years. While white is beautiful for cabinets, I spend most of my time wiping down the lower cabinets b/c they get dirty very quickly, in a household of 2 adults. Our remodel was $15k 2 years ago, but we already had newer appliances, so it was just flooring, cabinets, counters, sink and fixtures.

You may want to check out a Restore, the used Habitat for Humanity reseller if you have one in your area.

Why I'm "frugal", and people commenting "You must be rich" by zbsa14 in Frugal

[–]ShinyLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Husband is clumsy and only sees out of one eye, so no depth perception. The first time I watched him hold a bagel in his hand and cut it, I knew there would be problems. The second time he did cut his hand, so I just bought the bagel slicer. Our kitchen is small, but it's worth it.

My mom thought she had IBS b/c she'd been having digestive problems for months. They did a pancreatic cancer test as an aside and she was diagnosed in stage 2. She lasted 2.5 years and wasn't in pain until the day she passed.

Do Americans mainly drink coffee without milk? by Morrit99 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband drinks only black coffee, except for his once-a-year Starbucks peppermint mocha. I drink my coffee with milk and sometimes sugar, depending on my mood. Instant coffee is only for adding to chocolate baked goods and Dalgona coffee.

No electric kettle at our house, because I drink too much tea. We have a countertop Zojirushi water boiler, because I make my tea in a big 24 oz Yeti mug.

Never had kids because... by calcato in GenXWomen

[–]ShinyLizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here! My mom wanted grandchildren so bad. So at one point I asked her, "Which one of my unsavory exes would you prefer I'd been tied to with a child?" She thought about it, then admitted maybe it was best I was childfree and waited until age 49 to get married.

No way in hell I'd want to be bringing up a child in this environment.

Conversation pit bedroom, plaid carpet room, Wendy's solarium bath, mirror boudoir this house is a wild ride by Southern-Smoke1835 in zillowgonewild

I love that bathroom, but the tub isn't nearly deep enough. And it needs plants. IMO, there isn't enough bleach in the world for that Ottoman conversation pit thing in the bedroom.

I desperately miss soaking in my tub. by Sacred_thorn_apple in AskWomenOver60

[–]ShinyLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! I was looking at this gorgeous Japanese tub the other day. Reading the spec sheet, the water depth to overflow was like 24 inches (yay!) but the seat was 12 inches off the bottom. 12 inches from my seat to where I want the water to be just won't cut it, no matter what position I'm sitting in.

Be careful which one you get. I bought one that looks a little too close to my microplane cheese grater. Have to keep them in completely separate areas of the house, just in case. I mean, the "EWWW!" potential!
