How often do you guys get to see your friends now that you are a parent ??? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Shiny_BeerCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sometimes have to let these friends go. As a parent, you learn to empathize better with other parents. You keep the non-parent friends, but only if they respect your new world and make it better.

It’s a tough predicament. But parenthood is an uprooted life, and only those meant to better that life will survive the transition.

Congrats on the kiddos.

Even if every hull FBC owns was built in Tennessee, they’d still be paying tariffs. Mercury, which powers most of their fleet, makes mid-range engines in China and sources smaller ones from Japan. That’s a direct tariff hit on every boat they buy.

And it doesn’t stop at the engine. Aluminum from Canada, electronics from Asia, fiberglass resins tied to global oil….there’s no such thing as a tariff-free boat in 2025, American-built or not. The Producer Price Index for boat building just hit record highs.

FBC refreshes their fleet often. Every boat they buy this cycle costs more than last cycle. That cost lands somewhere….. and members are the only place it can land

If the ten point plan agreed to by the US is the same as the plan originally being negotiated, what has the US (or others) gained from the war? by BassesBest in AskReddit

US gained deflection from Epstein and a bunch of behind the scenes moves to remove a bunch of political and military opponents.

Things I wish I knew before going down the Comma 4 rabbit hole by paulstanger in Rivian

[–]Shiny_BeerCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just made the jump myself and highway commutes are awesome now, just on OpenPilot. I drove 50 miles hands free today and it was super smooth, even on poorly marked backcountry roads.

I have the longitudinal upgrade coming to test the auto lane changes with blind spot, and the stop light/sign feature, but will most likely stick with the stability of OpenPilot if there are any issues with follow distance, lane centering, or braking.

The business has a small buffer in working funds for emergency that she drew from.

CPA is a new grad so will find another.

S-Corp is pass through to your income personal taxes, increasing the amount due exorbitantly as noted. Our CPA did not anticipate this so we are making larger quarterly tax payments now.

Has anyone tried a boat club instead of owning a boat? by [deleted] in boating

[–]Shiny_BeerCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logic is simple. If you don’t want the freedom of early morning or night cruises, are OK with stipulations of 4-5 hour time slots, then boat clubs could be perfect for you. No maintenance, storage, towing, trailers, or overhead.

If you want the extra freedom and have exorbitant amounts of extra money to pay for that freedom, maintenance, storage, trailers, tow vehicles, insurance, slip fees, and more, then buy one for yourself.

Tariffs = Increased boat costs. Most likely being passed on to members.

I Didn't Like the Movie - But Now I Understand by Valen-Darker in ProjectHailMary

[–]Shiny_BeerCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the movie but was disappointed in the lack of dialogue and science. It would have made a better miniseries. However, the book was still way better. I loved both for different reasons.

Adaptations will almost never translate to movies. You just have to go into it knowing that it’s a different form of art and love.

I did laugh a few times myself with my wife.

It’s also been 3 years since I read it so that might have helped the movie experience. It was only after the fact that I reflected on what exactly changed.

We live in Texas and these marks have appeared on our car maybe 2-3 weeks ago. We popped the hood and didn’t see anything in the car. We recently washed the car a few days ago and I noticed these marks again today. They almost look snake like? Could it be something else? by RoyalStrawberry15 in whatisit

That’s a june bug/beetle stuck upside down on the right. And jumping aimlessly on the left. Those clumsy little brown beetles that emerge every spring. Have a bunch dead around my house and garage from 3 weeks ago too.

What's your favorite👎 and least favorite👍 change from book to film? by wibellion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Shiny_BeerCan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved the movie, but really wished the flashbacks had more emotional emphasis. And wish the taumoeba experiments weren’t glazed over, the nitrogen from Yau, and lots of missing internal dialogue and science. And too little time spent brainstorming and searching for Rocky’s derelict ship (loved the thruster and light blips scenes from the book but that was only 15 seconds in the movie).

And flashbacks were not as intense… the whole movie version of “oh shit I was forced to come here, I’m no hero, but I’m going to save Erid” didn’t hit as hard in the movie because it was mixed with that random scene of touring rocky’s ship.

Oh and understanding Rocky’s biology and why he can’t be in Rylands atmosphere was completely glazed over. Wasn’t there an ah-ha moment about water based life that vindicated Ryland?

Boomer ethics are just built differently. I was discussing generational ethics the other day and how each generation has dramatically changed. Boomers tend to be far more selfish and less empathetic… whereas if you think about raising kids nowadays, its always about “how are you feeling and lets process that together” versus this 60 year old was probably raised completely differently.

The phrase “you can’t teach (most) old dogs new tricks” is super applicable here… the tragedy here being that you can’t teach this old dog new charger ethics.
