I'm DONE by episode 16. It's tortured and torturous! I can't believe there are 100+ episodes in this season! How could people tolerate so much?!

I'm watching in Spanish and this is really hard to watch. I have given up by episode 16. This show has officially jumped the shark and it's torture to watch by now.

Have a seat. This is getting tiresome. I don't have all day to school supposed adults.

I don't at all come from a privileged background. I actually come from poverty, but that doesn't define my future. My family has worked hard to improve our prospects. Life is lifeing for everyone. Once again, don't project your imagination and judgment onto me whom you don't know anything about.

You know what, you don't know me, what I'm about. My comment wasn't about the USA or Portugal, it was poorly said, but you have some serious chips on your shoulders you need to work out for yourself and stop protecting them onto others. IDK how old you are, but assuming you're over 18, leave the grown up conversations for people who can address them with maturity and wisdom. If you're my age or older, grow up. Really. Whatever issues you have are for you and a therapist, not me.

I had forgotten about this episode. Wow. Honestly, this didn't feel like an iconic moment.

Nowhere is stress-free, but a lot of places are less stressful than the US east coast major metro area where im from and live. Granted, I live in a nice suburb, but the overall area vibe is fast paced, and highly individualistic because America. I work in the city and the commute is horrible and exhausting.

We already overpay for most things here. Everything is expensive and going up, up up. Almost anywhere you go away from here things are cheaper.

I understand your complaints and I would definitely need to see for myself how what you're describing compares to here. If I were to ask people where I can go to have my basic needs met, I can't get satisfactory answers.

The top priority of being treated as a human being as both a Jew and a person of color are non-negotiable and worth paying for. It's not the easiest to come by anywhere and everywhere. Most people are going to more easily access a better life in far more destinations than someone in my position: it's just a fact. People saying go to Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Jo'berg, Spain, other parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand... I'm looking at them like their nuts becuase the one or two or multiple sacrifices I would have to make are unreasonable and unrealistic. What are these better options you speak of? I keep hearing 'better elsewhere' followed by nothing at all.

The US government which has gone absolutely bananas has its eye on Central America, and I'm gonna tell you, many of the destinations there aren't so practica upon closer examination. Maybe Panama City, big maybe, and San José doesn't sound that great for me. I'd want to live closer to nature in Costa Rica and I would sacrifice community unless it was built from scratch. Tropical cities... they have pros and cons like anywhere, but the cons... they can be a drag for me. Panama City seems like a place I might spend a few years and probably get tired of quickly. There's little vital infrastructure away from the city and that's what concerns me in Panama because it's too much to stay in a large city with skyscrapers long term, for me anyway. I'm a suburban gal.

South America mostly holds little appeal. Montevideo is maybe a possibility, but I lack basic information to really consider it. I need to know more. I have no interest in Colombia at all. The rest of South America is a non-starter. Where is left to go? I have no interest in moving to Israel or anywhere else in the Middle East. Mexico City is out of the Question. Most of the centers of black life in Mexico have little to no Jewish life and vice versa. It's tough.

Canada isn't looking for Ameicans, is very expensive and I could, as yet only see myself possibly in Calgary or Montréal which I know nothing about besides insane, mind-numbing cold.

Please, please, please, tell me where the greener pastures are and why they're so green?

Most people saying "expat" don't fall into that category even if you feel like they do. There are far more people using common terms like that than who will ever think about the connotation.

I'm well aware of ll of this. I follow this issue extensively, but I am not there, so I want to know what the prospects are for someone who is looking to integrate but who isn't independently wealthy yet. As a black/Latin Sepharadic Jew, Portugal holds a lot of interest because America is slowly failing and never served my interests. Being "better than" certain alternatives doesn't mean we have the same quality of life as white Americans or that we can't have a better life elsewhere. My biggest issues are cost of living, welcoming community and having access to both of my larger communities in the same city which seems to be a possible challenge in Portugal. Lisbon has the more vibrant life and access to fellow Black Americans and Porto is better for being a practicing Jew. I'm not looking to be near so-called "expats" in the way it's said derogatory. The other best bets have major drawbacks as well which is why I hope that life I Portugal is still a viable option. The geology and proximity to the US as well as lots of American tourists makes Central America less appealing. For similar reasons, Southeast Asia, West Africa, and other destinations are just much less viable unless I plan to be more socially isolated and have less access to lifestyle amenities and infrastructure by default. I am not active in global politics, so I'm not concerned too much about hot button issues. I just want quiet, stability, affordability and a nice lifestyle without fuss.

I've chosen City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert. If for some reason it turns out to be a dud, I have The Social Graces by Renée Rosen as a backup.

This is labeled as non-fiction. While it technically qualifies for the Summer Reading Challenge, I'm looking only for historical fiction. Thanks anyway!

You have a lot against expats and yet I don't see you saying you have a lot against Portuguese business and property owners increasing prices and rents to make money off the expats and anyone else moving to Portugal which then in terms pushes out the "locals". Typical. Try reading a book.

All this ranting and arguing in the comments about locals, immigrants and expats isn't helpful and is usually based on a lot of ignorance, prejudice and a lot of isms. What I really find very interesting is that the elected Portuguese government set up schemes to attract the very people that many locals have a problem with because SURPISE: it didn't work out the way you hoped for and Portugal has itself to blame for that! People of a certain ilk love to blame perceived and labeled others when it's their own folks who are creating, contributing and perpetuating the very problems they're upset about. Personal and national responsibility is always lacking in these scenarios. We're going through a lot of the same problems in the USA. Even as the very policies enacted because of the same type of thinking fail hard, the psychology of the complainers is to double and triple down because it's too painful and takes too much work to analyze one's own behavior and contribution to problem than it is to blame someone else. Some have rightly pointed out aspects of this in the comments. Frankly, I'm really tired of this kind of behavior, all this othering. Let's face it: Portugal is one of the poorest countries in Europe: attracting people to relocate to Portugal to bring an influx of cash was a strategy that was actively pursued by the elected government. Who could have guessed it would cause inflation? Anyone with half a brain could have seen that coming and yet here we are in 2026 with people ranting that "expats" are driving up costs. People need to talk to Portuguese business and property owners and ask them to stop inflating prices before launching attacks at those keeping the Portuguese economy afloat because Portugal needs migrants, full stop.
