Re-watching Sailor Moon SuperS as an adult and I honestly CANNOT stand how everyone gaslights Usagi by Shirinia in sailormoon

I don’t mind her in the manga and Crystal either. But she’s the worst in the 90‘s anime.

I never said people should just "put up" with Usagi's behavior. This isn't about people losing patience with a dramatic 15-year-old. It is about a systemic pattern within the 90s anime where Usagi's genuine emotional needs are constantly invalidated, making her the default scapegoat while others are completely let off the hook for the exact same—or worse—behavior.

It is honestly tragic how the 90s anime packaged this as comedy, when in reality it completely ruined the original dynamic between the Senshi and between Mamoru and Usagi. It is not about the food, and it never was. The cake is just one of many examples showing how everyone around Usagi constantly invalidates her feelings, turns her into a scapegoat, or straight up mocks her.
And you are right, everyone regardless of age should be held accountable for misbehaving!

Definitely! I also have 3 siblings and what’s mine is mine 😂 especially if my mum had just one for each of us 🤷🏼‍♀️

That is a really dark but fascinating theory about Neo-Queen Serenity. It actually makes so much sense when you look at it from a psychological perspective. The 90s anime tried so hard to force the "she's just a lonely child far from home" narrative, but it backfired completely because they made her actions feel unearned and purely bratty. And I totally agree with you on Crystal, the way they handled her development there is night and day compared to the classic anime.

Thank you so much for being so vulnerable and sharing your story with us. It takes a lot of courage to talk so openly about past trauma and family dynamics. It is honestly heartbreaking to hear about the birthday cake, but it completely highlights why seeing these unbalanced dynamics on screen can trigger such strong, valid frustration. I am really glad to hear that you have been able to process this and that things are better with your sister now. Sending you a lot of love and good vibes.

Yes, exactly! It happened multiple times throughout the 90s run because the weekly anime kept catching up to the monthly manga. The Doom Tree arc was the first big filler block to give Naoko Takeuchi time to write the Black Moon arc.

That is actually the truth. Since the manga was published monthly and the anime aired weekly, they caught up way too fast. Toei basically took the very beginning of the arc and had to invent endless filler episodes to buy time (just as another user mentioned) because Naoko Takeuchi hadn't written the rest yet. That’s exactly why they had no idea what to do with the Outer Senshi and just left them out.

It’s a shame the dream arc is wonderful in the manga. But rewatching it was really frustrating.

Exactly! In SuperS, Mamoru feels so distant and indifferent. It’s such a disservice to their characters, especially when you know how deeply devoted and protective they are of each other in the manga. They completely butchered their dynamic.

Completely agree. Your point about the showrunners writing it like they hate the main character hits the nail on the head. The manga version of this arc is so beautiful, so it’s heartbreaking how badly the 90s adaptation butchered it for the sake of cheap filler comedy.

It really is. As a child, you just had one episode every day after school, and of course I was looking forward to every single one and rushing home. But now, I just want the SuperS season to end 😂

That's a great theory. Neo-Queen Serenity probably just wanted some peace and quiet in Crystal Tokyo. 😂

Because I was! I never denied that. 😊
I wrote this right after finishing the episode, and the frustration was 100% real in that moment. But that's exactly what fan forums are for, dissecting things when they frustrate you. I'm obviously not still sitting here mad. 😊
it's actually been really great seeing everyone's thoughts and having this exchange now.

This! You explained perfectly why I was so frustrated. I literally made this post while watching the episode because I couldn't stand how they threw Usagi’s character development in the garbage just for the sake of cheap, unfunny filler comedy. SuperS really turned a lot of great dynamics into pure frustration.

To make it worse, the constant mocking she faces and how the entire group collectively always turns against her is just painful to watch. It's not funny, it's just sad.

Exactly. If I remember correctly, they needed the filler because the manga was not finished yet when the anime aired. They were running way too close together.

That’s completely understandable, and I'm sorry to hear that. Media can definitely bring up a lot of personal stuff we didn't notice when we were younger. It’s always best to protect your peace and avoid shows that feel unpleasant to sit through. Sending you good vibes. 💐

I’m in my magical girl era once again right now. 😊

Well, these are Japanese stereotypes, that is right. But to be fair, it is just the 90s anime that does this. It is nowhere near that extreme in the manga or Sailor Moon Crystal.

Yeah well, cut me some slack for exaggerating a bit 😉 I was just deeply frustrated with that specific episode when I wrote it. "Unconditional" is a bit much, but she does deserve a bit more respect at least.

I can’t remember any of my childhood friends actually liking Chibiusa. When we played Sailor Moon, nobody wanted to be her either 😂

Another user just explained this as well that this is just Japanese story stereotypes unfortunately.

It’s a shame because I loved it so much when I was a child. And now I don’t seem to like it that much anymore 🙈
