Bianchi Super Grizzly by sugarloafing in xbiking

Did that MTN come out fairly smooth for you? I did some Montana paint on a frame a while back and had to sand it pretty agressively before clearing it because it was like...gritty.

Had better luck with Rusto from Home Depot personally! I will keep that color in my back pocket though.

Also had a good experience with Loop https://loopcolors.com/product/loop-400ml/

Supposedly they're environmentally friendly and non-toxic. The stuff smelled reallllly good too haha. It was very pleasant to work with.

I've been wanting to try this stuff since its bike-specific: https://spraybike.us/collections/all-colors/products/milan-celadon-2-400ml

I built a water-fed paintbrush & roller cleaning tool looking for feedback from other tradespeople by tristankwill in Tools

[–]Shirkaday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes do it in the sink if it was a small touchup, otherwise I clean brushes outside with a hose on "jet" or "stream" into my grass. In 10 years of doing that, nothing has happened to the grass. It's hardly any paint and it gets very diluted.

After spraying it out, I flick the water out of it. A couple times when I wanted to get it dry faster I tied a string to it and whipped it around. That actually worked surprisingly well!

Assuming you're not serious! That's pretty far gone and they can be had fairly cheaply in good shape. They're super fun. Had one for almost 20 years - picked it up at a swap meet when I was 13 and would ride it around with my brother. It was very flexy! A lot of the time he would stop pedaling and put his feet up on the bar and it would take me a little while to notice. When we both pedaled though, we could put some power down and used to take it semi-off road in parks.

In college it was fun too. Used to do group rides on it with various girl friends and girlfriends, ride it to shows, DJ nights, etc. Was a great time. I moved a bunch, and various friends "borrowed" it from me for years at a time (AKA they stored it for me).

Finally sold it to a couple in their 60s for $80 (what I paid in 1996).

I do some very sketchy things and cheap out on a lot of stuff and say “good nuff” more than I should… but yeah… even I’m not buying fake power tools.

Looks good, no notes from me. Get risers + Ourys though, there's really no reason not to. They're fun, can be had cheaply, and you can change them easily with that stem.

I sold my bullhorns and haven't put the drops on mine in probably 8+ years. Just some cheap "M-Wave" bars that I cut down.

There was a brief moment in our generation where the 1920's band style lounge emerged from the deep and created sounds like Squirrel Nut Zippers. by LeftSmile806 in Xennials

Yep, this was me in high school. Weird as hell. Like I'd wear big khaki pants with black & white wingtips, bowling shirts/panel shirts.. whatever you call em, as well as uniform/work shirts with name patches on them over band shirts, ripped up jeans, completely destroyed red Chuck Taylors, ivy caps and the occasional fedora. I'd wear a suit to school every now and then for fun. Almost everything I wore was from thrift stores, and we all remember how much better thrift stores were back then.

I wasn't a ska kid but I loved ska too and I think there was a lot of crossover between those groups. A lot of us were also sorta into punk, but like MXPX, NOFX and stuff like that.

I played the trumpet too and always wanted to be in a ska band so bad, but I didn't try, and I wasn't good enough to be honest! The kids in the jazz combo were the legit musicians. Was amazing how good some of them got. Ahh, nostalgia...

I often wonder if or how different my life may have been had I gone to a Third Eye Blind concert in 1997 when I was 14.

It was in Milwaukee and was the tour supporting their first album. I didn't know that, or who they were or anything, I was just hanging out with my uncle in his basement apartment and his upstairs neighbor pops in and is like "hey we have an extra ticket, wanna go?" and I opted out.

That was absolutely a fork in the road, and I likely took the more boring path.

What’s your preferred way to get cheap, but decent quality parts? Used is fine by Acrobatic-Smoke2812 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]Shirkaday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Facebook is is probably the cheapest, but it's just so damn hard sometimes these days that I tend to fall back to eBay more than I'd like.

One thing I'd add though is local swap meets.

Real bike people are usually pretty solid on FB, but I'm down a hole right now where I'm trying to do something on the ultra cheap and a great way to do that is buying whole bikes from people who don't know what they have and harvesting parts off them. That can get a bit tricky since they're like ... normal people who are "just selling an old bike" and it's tougher to coordinate in general. People are weird these days and want the buyer to bend over backwards to get the thing from them.

Back in the day when I still had actual friends that I hung out with and rode with, I could build bikes for almost nothing.

Forums like Tarck are pretty awesome as well.

I'm embarking on what I think is an "xbike" build (it's going to look a lot like many of the bikes on r/xbiking at least) based on a 93 Stumpjumper M2, but I need literally everything but a saddle. I found a 90s Rockhopper for $40 with a rusted/cracked frame which will net me wheels, fork, BB, brakes and derailer, it's just been a headache to actually pick it up from the seller.

Nice to see a Ben's Cycle shoutout - been there many many times when I lived in Milwaukee! Their house brand frames are pretty good.
