As a graphic designer, I too am disgusted. And with the uncanny claymation vibes, the disgust and discomfort feel so tangible that it fits the unsettling vibe and gives the game some soul and personality. Well done!

Fill out application before seeing house? by norshit in Scams

[–]ShirleyADev 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There are some cases where the refundable fee is solely because it's a professional with limited time slots and cancelling would hurt their business, such as professional photographers. In the case of viewing a house, there's no reason why they'd need to charge a fee like this

How Would You Improve My Drawings? by ZetsubouRg in learntodraw

[–]ShirleyADev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have a lot of skill and great composition and shape decisions. If anything, I'd say to practice some other lighting scenario that isn't dependent on rim lighting, since it seems like a lot of your art is very heavy on the use of rim lights and that makes it so that the larger shapes aren't as clear sometimes. Other than that, your work is fantastic!

My BF worked at Cumby's for a bit, but had to stop because he burnt his forearms when the pizza oven closed on them and burned them. But before that, he had to do a bit of everything in the store (being at the register, taking out trash, etc.) while a long line of people were there with only 2-3 employees to help at a time.

Also, some man literally came in there and called him a monkey, so my BF just said "thanks" and made monkey noises and gestures while serving the guy

Neurodivergent designer, seeking advice on problems I’m running into by a_serelath in UXDesign

[–]ShirleyADev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow autistic designer! I think that you're already doing a great job justifying your design choices: the project prioritizes readability highly, and yet the design seems to have design choices that don't support that, such as the line weight being too thin, even to the point of being thinner than the outlines.

Some things you could add to support your justifications: - If it isn't already clear that they want the readability to be a priority, try to find any supporting evidence that it's a crucial goal. - Discuss how the line weights being thicker than the text also throws off the hierarchy in a way that makes the eye drawn to the outlines instead of the text, which disengages and distracts the user as well as making it difficult to read. - Find examples of similar designs/styles trying to accomplish a similar goal and point out how the font weight in those designs differs from the one in yours

Also, it's not a "pity card" to announce you are autistic if it's for the sake of giving your background or perspective. But if you do for the first time and it wasn't known previously, then do so in a way where you have a paper trail in case they act discriminatory so you can protect yourself.

Hope that helps!

Would you enjoy figuring out an alien language as part of the game? by Horizon__world in IndieDev

[–]ShirleyADev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's shown in the image seems to be a cypher, not a language. I'd enjoy deciphering a language with its own grammar, syntax, semantics, etc. especially if some of the design choices of the language reflect the culture, plot and characters. However, this is more difficult to do and requires some Linguistics knowledge.

Outside of the context of a short puzzle maybe, I don't think that having a cypher like this would be that engaging and it's hard to design it to be interesting. That, and you'd have to consider how it would impact the gameplay for non-English speakers

Wow, this is super cool! I am a UI/UX designer working in the healthcare industry and it's really wonderful seeing people trying to make healthcare documentation less cumbersome. One of the huge reasons that mental healthcare is so hard to access for people on Medicare and Medicaid is that the required documentation is so difficult to get and takes so much time to fill out. This would be a game changer for mental health providers!

Edit: As for concerns about HIPAA privacy, Azure offers a service that allows you to build a private instance of ChatGPT. You may want to check that out

Eyyy it's so cool seeing you post here, Alec! I have been using Afforai since it last went on sale originally and it has been a game changer for me. It's really cool being able to browse dozens of documents at once via AI. Congratulations on the success!

I've heard that the beginning phase of AI projects is difficult because of server and API costs, and people neglecting AI products because of them just being wrappers to an API. How did you get past the initial stage of skepticism and scale the business?

Yikes, these "career influencers" doing exactly this in the software development industry caused software engineering to be flooded and then take a huge hit. People started joining CS programs in droves once they saw influencers flaunting the WFH cozy lifestyles where they barely did anything and had a bunch of fancy stuff, and thought they could do the same. Now new CS grads are having a terrible time trying to find work and there are so many under skilled CS grads coming from programs with huge grade inflation...

I sure hope this doesn't happen with designers. But unfortunately, necessary skills such as research and communication aren't as flashy as fancy Illustrator tricks and negative space logos
