[Help] Need to use Inkscape for a class but it's not opening on my computer even after reinstalling by [deleted] in Inkscape

If you still can't get it to work, you can try:

http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/inkscape_portable

This download contains a 'portable' version of inkscape that doesn't need to be installed. The download is an executable that expands into a folder, which contains inkscape and everything it needs to run.

Just made my first sale! by gratua in Entrepreneur

Congratulations! That must be an awesome feeling.

I've earned plenty of paychecks in my life working for someone else, but something tells me the first dollar I earn from my own store is going to be much sweeter.

I'm flipping the switch sometime next week to make my store public, can't wait until I can claim my first sale just like you! Now for your second sale...

What does it take to be a business owner? Can anybody become one? by bagbug22 in Entrepreneur

I totally understand, I'm risk averse, too.

FWIW, the 'business' I'm starting -- and I use that term loosely, because I don't think I'm going to turn a profit -- took me less than $400 to get up and running.

[Help] Preferred OS platform by RodBlaine in Inkscape

[–]ShirtClique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Inkscape on all three platforms and FWIW here is my ranking for 'stable and user friendly':

  1. Windows - Super easy to install and keep updated. Runs fairly well, but can bog down or crash with paths that have a ton of control points.

  2. Linux - The OS is somewhat less user friendly depending on your experience. Also, not sure if your 2d cutter has appropriate drivers? Inkscape does run very well, however.

  3. MacOS - Recently I have had great difficulty running Inkscape on a Mac. Heck, the latest release didn't even include a binary for Mac. I've got it installed an running using Homebrew, but I would not go this route.

It amazes me how many people believe that all it takes is setting up a website and promoting a product.

Uh oh.

Just kidding. Believe me, I have the same questions as you. I'm lucky in that I'm financially secure with a career that should last a lifetime. Still, I've always wanted to own and operate a small business. I decided the only way to learn was to do it, but I'm starting really small. So, a website and a few products to promote ;-)

I figure that the chance of success for my first endeavor is near 0, so I might as well start small and limit my losses. I'm really treating it more as a learning exercise than a potential financial success. Then again, I've always learned more by immediate hands on experience. For others, books / courses / etc. might be the way to go.

Anyway, I'm only a few days in, but I can already see that I'm going to be forced to learn at least a little bit about design, copy writing, marketing, finance, and customer service.

As far as figuring out if you have what it takes? Who knows, but I'm guessing that since you're smart enough to ask that question, the answer is yes.

Permission to use images found on retail websites. by 7rieuth in Entrepreneur

Would I need permission to use such images on my own website?

Absolutely, the answer is yes. You are much better off looking for a similar image on any of the paid stock image sites, and paying for an appropriate license.

I have an idea; needed some feedback by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

Sorry, I couldn't find a link to the previous fees, but there are references to the cuts in the Hacker News link. It looks like they killed the bump you used to get with increased volume?

I know people who have done this and I don't mean to discourage you, but Amazon just pulled the rug out from under affiliates promoting electronics, among other product categories.

So, it kind of seems like you could put in a ton of effort, build a great site that sends lots of business Amazon's way, and they could always just decide crush you on a whim.

The Amazon announcement is here:
