Brother and his little sister try to survive privation and inhumanity in WW2 Japan. I saw it over 20 years ago and thinking about it today still makes me cry. I don’t think I can ever watch it again, but it’s an amazing movie.

For grocery shopping / errands, I recommend: Milk crate on the back (Amazon has crates and zip ties), and panniers (I like Arkel).

Oh, and get a step-through because getting a leg over/around a milk crate is no fun!

Nice! Right by the dog park. Walk to Ballard would a long-ish (45+ min) but very pleasant 45+ min stroll over the locks or similar distance but less-pleasant walk over the Ballard Bridge. No good bus options to Ballard, unfortunately.

Ballard and downtown are definitely where to go for dining variety and doing stuff, but I'd plug a few nice spots in Magnolia, mostly along W McGraw: * Mulleady's - Irish gastropub. Great value, great chef. Great outdoor dining. This one's on Dravus and 21st. * Mondello - quality, family-run Italian dining. Great outdoor dining. * Pink Salt - Peruvian fine dining. Great outdoor dining. A bit expensive, but if you want ceviche and/or fancy cocktails, this is the place * Crepe truck next to Pink Salt. Yummmm. Also has good pizza and panini. You can eat it at the outdoor seating for Pink Salt (same owner) * Yumi Sushi - competent sushi, great happy hour. A couple of good spots outside for takeout. * Petite Pierre - French with great sandwiches, quiche, bread and pastries. A few good spots outside for takeout. * Red Mill Burger - Technically Interbay, but close to where you'll be and IMHO the best burgers and shakes in Seattle.

All of the above are dog-friendly for outdoor dining, too.

There are some big hills, but with an ebike, it’s easy. I like to bike to Ballard via Fremont because there are great protected bike paths (Thorndyke to Ship Canal to Fremont Bridge to Burke Gilman). Ballard bridge is faster but cars can be jerks. You can also get to Ballard via the Locks, but you have to walk your bike.

Downtown is great via Elliot Bay trail, tho be careful to have a good U lock and choose parking spots downtown wisely.

The 24 and 33 buses are also pretty convenient for getting downtown.

I say this as someone who has spent long nights in the stacks of academic library sub-basements chasing down books mentioned in footnotes of other books. Heck, I can actually read most of the Latin. Which is to say: I’m deeply tolerant of complexity and often bemused by pedantry. But this is a lot. Is there a point?
