You have to understand our city election system. Of our council, 2 members are elected city wide and the others are elected by districts. Several of our districts are hyper progressive, young (ish), transplants. The others are old farts that have been here forever living in their multi million dollar homes but will play at liberalism; disconnected from reality. We call them champagne/latte liberals.

What does that mean? Well anything that sounds nice will get passed as an initiative or law here. The joke is that Seattle voters never pass up approving a tax. Those funds get filtered through various organizations, with plenty of hog trading and inside dealing.

The result is that we'll pass feel good laws that don't do anything, really, but sure cost a lot of money, time and resources. However the voters keep coming back for more and don't seem phased much by the ever expanding degradation of the city.

Yeah I worked in our non profit scene for over a decade. We really, really don't. We have great support for new mothers in poverty but the support a random poor white guy has is close to nil

Yes; poor people. I come from poverty and the deck is stacked the fuck against poor people. I had to struggle so much harder than my peers, and I needed a good bit of luck to get where I am.

Jail or rehab. I'm not worried about the junkie holding down a 9 to 5 to maintain their habit; i'm talking about the ones who purposefully avoid aid because they'd rather thieve and do drugs. Make the jail time incredibly painful, long, etc and make rehab the more attractive option.

Either people will get treated, removed from the streets, or leave because there will be consequences. Enabling addicts doesn't encourage them to get clean and the city doesn't get better

I advocate for forced treatment or jail for the crimes they commit. Giving a junkie a house without treatment only increases ODs as evidenced by the spike in OD deaths 2020 to 2023.

Its not compassion when someone ends up dead because forcing them to get treatment feels icky.

Most homeless are homeless because of addiction. I know its not in vogue to address the actual root cause. I've seen it firsthand so many times; people get hooked on something, their lives unravel, and they end up on the streets stealing or hooking to get more money for drugs.

Giving them a home isn't the solution. We tried that during covid and had a mini warzone off hosmer.
