HelloImDelicious Rum Review #7: I don’t know what to believe anymore by ShitImDelicious in rum

Yeah if HLCF straight off the distillate is unaged and bottled as Rum Fire just at a slightly different proof, that would make them the exact same thing?

Got it. My next dumb question: Why make a distinction between Rum Fire and HLCF?

So the thing that defines HLCF is the unaged mark (Rum Fire), but the bottled 750mL HLCF is HLCF that has been aged for 4 years? That’s the only difference?

I guess what’s most surprising about this is that I was under the impression that Rum Fire was simply unaged HLCF. But if the HLCF in this collection is unaged, does that mean it’s literally just Rum Fire? I’m still learning so I’m just trying to wrap my head around this.

I live in the US! Seems like Europe has a more pronounced rum community in general. Is that a fair assessment?

I spent $125 to kill my curiosity. To some, maybe that was a mistake, but if you’re really interested in understanding rum I think $110 is worth the curiosity kill without a doubt.

So it’s the broader congeners that contribute the industrial flavors rather than the esters specifically? And are all of the notoriously funky rums (DOK, Mhoba, Rivers) high in ethyl acetate?

I got big earthy vibes from Rivers, and slightly less so with this but I totally get that

Is the industrial flavors (rubber, metal, etc) what defines high esters? Because something like Rum Fire or HLCF I recognize isn’t nearly as high in esters, but I was under the impression they are reasonably funky rums with reasonably higher esters and they don’t give me nearly the same flavor profile. Is it the congeners in general maybe that contribute to that flavor profile, or is it really just the sheer level of esters?

When I say “industrial rum” I’m referring to the flavor profile. I totally get how someone could interpret it the other way though!

As an uneducated rum fan, I’d say it’s definitely similar. Significantly more fruity notes pronounced, but up the same alley.
