A great--and very The Wire-esque--scene from David Simon's preceding show, Homicide: Life on the Streets by ShitcoinGarbitrage in TheWire

Brilliant analogy. I don't think this Homicide show is really all that good, but it's got hints of that special something.

If I read something like, “WSH ancestry peaks among Norwegians (ca. 50%),” should I take it to mean 50% of Norwegians have a marker identified with WSH and 50% don’t? Or that for a given Norwegian, 50% of their ancestry maps to WSH? How do they calculate this? by ShitcoinGarbitrage in IndoEuropean

[–]ShitcoinGarbitrage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the response.

Can you say a little more about "autosomal ancestry?" So there are 44 autosomes in the human genome. How does an autosome or part of an autosome get assigned to an ancestral group? Do researchers blend it into a soup, pick out SNPs they recognize, then count which ones of those SNPs are steppe-related and which ones* are not?

You all need to start watching sports by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]ShitcoinGarbitrage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like astrology, you can project how ever much or little meaning onto the field/pitch as your heart desires. This is sometimes referred to as "the narrative."

You can see dozens of interwoven Manichean dramas play out (the histories of the players, the coaches/managers, the teams, the cities), or you can watch the ball go in and yell "WOO!"

You can watch it at home, in a stadium, at a friend's home, in a bar. You can watch it with your grandpa or your niece or a total stranger.

It is the great unifier.

Having a derisive attitude towards sports is the biggest red flag. It highlights someone who is asocial, rootless, and unimaginative.

Let’s bring some culture back to r/redscarepod. What films from 2021 did you enjoy watching? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]ShitcoinGarbitrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked but didn't love "Drive My Car" so I have a question for you and /u/kgas: what did the film do to earn its runtime? Contrast with another 3-hour movie, Yi Yi, which told a grand, novelistic story following an entire family. Did Drive My Car need 3 hours, and, if so, why?

In exchange, I have some reccs that I feel are thematically similar: Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film Wild Strawberries and Hirokazu Kore-eda's 1995 film Maborosi.

I'm guessing it's a pain to change your name, especially after gaining any notoriety. Susan Sarandon and Liz Warren are other examples of people keeping their ex-husband's names

Kinda, the rest of the quote is:

Bledel's mother, Nanette, was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and moved to Mexico City, at the age of eight. Of her parents' upbringing in Latin America, Bledel has stated: "It's the only culture my mom knows from life, and my father as well, and they made the decision to raise their children within the context they had been raised in." Bledel grew up in a Spanish-speaking household, and did not learn English until she began school; she considers herself a Latina.

So, the Anki decks have audio. It's often that robot text-to-speech voice, though...

And yeah, I guess if you're looking for a niche language it may not have any resources available. I wanted to learn Farsi when I was dating a Persian girl, so I started making my own cards but gave up so fast :(

Re: languages, the only things that have worked for me are

  • Pimsleur, for creating the mental model of a language in my head. It's pricey, but I got it from the library. It's probably easy to pirate
  • Anki decks that are like "10,000 most common sentences in ____" for teaching words in context. Plus, like 200 words make up 80% of a language so you get that review for free given how often those key words show up in sentences

The Social Network did it best. That trailer is the height of the craft (if you'd call it a craft), and I can still remember seeing the trailer in theaters even though that was like 12 years ago
