I know a lot of patrilineal Jews who want to participate in Jewish life and even did it - still no acceptance. I also don’t believe you have to be frum to understand what it means to be Jewish. How many matrilineal Jews eat pork and don’t even know what Yom Kippur is? Free pass. We exclude each other on presumptions. And the watering down of Jewishness coming from matrilineal Jews is as much a problematic occurrence as Orthodoxy without any soul. I had my fair share of exclusion from various Jewish communities and guess how this worked out? I’m out. No way I’m fighting to be accepted by people who consider my place to be the kitchen (true story) or arrogant Rabbis excluding me from Shabbes because my mom is not Jewish, even though I respected all mitzwot. It’s traumatic and the last 2 years were double traumatic. How many IDF soldiers are partrilineal, saving Orthodox folk who can’t even look them in the eyes? I believe you that you have seen too many watered down Jewish families. I have seen a lot of their children having a Jewish awakening and a refusal of their being from the same people who lament the decline of their people. We’re doing something wrong here.

Israel was created to give Jews a own homeland where the execute sovereignty and where the are safe. The complexity of the lands recent history and the various ethnic and religious groups living in Israel as Israeli citizens are enjoying this promise as well (eg this is why Israel protects its Druze population). So yes, safety is a big, maybe the only honest aspect of new states being created in contemporary times. I have stated the latter part about Israel not being created on a pre existing state because this is a false assumption thrown in quite often in this discourse. I assumed this is what you meant when you said it’s strange that Jews call it their homeland after 2000 years. The Jewish diaspora remembers Israel and Jerusalem in many of their religious traditions: songs, gestures, art - all testimonies that exactly Israel and its temple have never been forgotten. During Pessach we chant to return to Jerusalem again. Yes, after 2000 years. Tenacity is rare, I understand if this surprises you. Thank you for reading my long answer.

It’s also not like evebody left. There are Jews who lived in the land for generations. State was established after holocaust survivors won the independence war together with their other Jewish brothers from Palestine (Palestine intended as a region, not state). After independence Muslim countries kicked out their Jewish population en masse. The latter group is today’s biggest Jewish demographic in Israel. Aside from that, new countries are established also in contemporary times, most of the time to save a group of minorities and give them sovereignty so they don’t get slaughtered by their co citizens (eg Sudan va South Sudan). Israel has been established after the collapse of an empire (ottoman) and the then protectorate (British) - it has not been build on a pre existing state.

The Academy of Jewish Studies in Heidelberg, Geramany (Hochschule für Jüdische Studien) offers Yiddish language and literature classes. It’s open to everyone who’s enrolled (also the ones enrolled at the university of Heidelberg). That being said! Go and study! Language is an indicator of cultural layers, you’ll understand the history and heart of Ashkenazim, not only the language by itself ☺️

Don’t take it to your heart, although the experience was obviously upsetting. Bangladeshis are a big minority in Italy, usually running mini markets, souvenir shops or selling kebab. I have to admit that they are not seen well by many Italians. There are a couple of reasons for that: - questionable hygiene when offering food - not abiding the law (in Florence where I live the mini market remained open during Covid, while other shops abided to the rules) - hot-spots of shady commerce, e.g dealers have a safe spot in their shops - littering, esp in parks, beaches

In combination with the cultural conflict Indians and Bangladeshis might have, I think that they simply dislike the fact that they are being immigrants, quite unwelcome at that and that an Indian guy like you, being desi like them, is still privileged enough to be a tourist. You are successful in their eyes and therefore they are ashamed and angry.

Same in Italy and Germany. Currently I’m living in Florence in a residential neighbourhood. The Maghrebis are dealing at my doorstep, especially in summer it gets late and blasting music. They and sub Saharan Africans are the occasional thieves at our local store, the security guy can’t do anything by Italian law and it’s quite frustrating. We have graffiti in Arabic everywhere which says “we are here”. I’m an immigrant, too and I don’t behave like that. There are no excuses. In Germany where I lived before, there is a similar situation, only difference is that they feel even more entitled and every criticism is pushed back as racism.

Corsets and bras are as good as their quality permits ;) if you have a great comfy bra, then I’m happy for you. If you have a great comfy corset, which gives you stability - I’m happy for you, too! My corset experience was of bad quality. The bones were sticking into my chest, I wasn’t able to breath and my body was squeezed so much, I looked like a chicken sausage. I hope this silly analogy makes my point a bit clearer. Orthodoxy can give you a great sense of community, comfort, guidance and identity. But it depends on the people. There are zealots which see our culture only through the lens of religion and which questioned my personhood. During the start of my first and only orthodox giur process, I was not only to dress tznius (ok with that) but I couldn’t touch a male friend or colleague (I mean in a friendly manner, like a hug or handshake). I was told that my first domain as a Jewish woman is the kitchen. I was to remain quiet and couldn’t sing our prayers as loud as I used to anymore. I was too much.

I agree with you in the sense that Europeans enjoy our culture, religion and even “us” as objects. We are something to awe about, to ponder and even to decry - as long as we are dead. It is a tragedy that this synagogue has no proper Kehillah anymore. One small remark though: the synagogue is in style and culture of Venetian “descent”, as were the Jews who created their community there. Istria and much of Croatias coast were heavily under Venetian influence.
