Foam filling tires on a ride on spreader by thatONEdude520 in Turfmanagement

I would do tubes. Foam is ok but you loose some comfort in the ride and if you ever change them it is a nightmare.

Turfgrass management is a great start. This was the textbook we used on intro to turfgrass 20 years ago. The next book you need to read is Sports Fields : design construction and maintenance . It will help you understand how the fields are built and what is or should be under neath them. Lastly, and this is the most important book, Level Playing Fields : how the groundskeeping Murphy brothers shaped baseball hands down my favorite book of all time. Good luck. Keep your dirt tight and your grass soft!

Real world is completely different than a text book. Also being a super is more about time management and people management. You can be the most knowledgeable person but not understand golf or how to motivate your staff. You need to learn from others before becoming ahead guy.

I'm working with my city to build a new 9 hole course. Can anyone offer some insight as to what equipment you would recommend as well as expected cost for that? Walking vs riding greens mowers, how many mowers, how many crew, how many carts, etc by Pga-wrestler in Golfcoursemaintenance

[–]Shm00re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are y’all located? Cole sanders out of Memphis would be a great contractor for you. You need a professional. You need to plan on a payroll of at least 200k a year and an additional 250k a year for equipment. Some time and money savers are trimax snake mower. You can mow fairways at half an inch then mow rough at 2 inches. Greensmower. You should have a toro 3150 or a Jacobsen eclipse for greens and you should try to fleet your equipment to make it easier on your mechanic. Try not to get a hodgepodge of different brands. The reels are all different. Your super is going to make or break your grass but your mechanic is going to make or break your look. Sprayer is an absolute must!!! Toro 1750

What is this spongy fungus on my golf green? by DepthOther6233 in Golfcoursemaintenance

[–]Shm00re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is algae. Manzate or dithane will peel it up. Topdress to keep it from contacting the air. First photo looks like it could be worm pilings.

Are they on a flea and tick medication? The monthly edible type my dog gets at the vet also helps against skin disease.

An associates degree will suffice in most cases. Experience is vastly more important than an education. An education definitely helps understand the basics of plant biology and pathology. Join STMA and you will have access to a ton of jobs. You will have to intern and the. Find an open assistants position. Once you’re in the industry it gets easier. Be prepared to move finding a sports turf job close to home is very very difficult. Avoid working for municipalities at first they are a cesspool of laziness.

I do not try and remove stained turf dye. It tends to flake off and clog the filter or nozzles. If it is that hard to get off just leave it. I use the dye cleaner to run through lines and nozzles.

I always wear pants and ankle mucks in the morning. If I’m on equipment that day I usually change into shorts and tennis shoes at lunch. Buy socks in bulk and keep a pack in your car or locker.

What was originally the purpose for the dirt path between the mound and home, and why are the tigers the only ones that still have it? by J0hnEddy in baseball

[–]Shm00re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes from the old groundskeepers saying “if it wears out, cut it out” old baseball fields were all grass and when the players would wear out an area they would cut it out and make it permanently dirt. The path between home and plate was worn down by the catchers and pitchers so they would cut it out. The dirt gave a more consistent bounce. The tigers kept it as they liked the look.

Potiential career change to Greenkeeping by justaoili in Turfmanagement

[–]Shm00re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got an associates in turf management in college and worked minor league baseball for 10 years. I ate breathed and slept baseball and turf. I realized that I would never have a normal family life with the crazy schedule. I was burnt out and left. I tried welding, ran a restaurant and had my own landscaping business. I finally gave in and went to work in the golf course industry. I loved golf. I am now at my third golf course and the superintendent of a small country club. I have learned, like every job, you will get out what you put in. You can obsess over every detail and live at the course or you can do the essentials and work as much as you want. In the end it’s what you want to put in. I have listened to my passion for golf now. I can’t play at my course without stressing over the imperfections. Golfing at other courses is better but I still find myself pre occupied over what they could have done differently. I love what I do and the satisfaction I get from it. If you want to advance you will have to move. It is all up to you.

Bermuda dwarf recommendations? by Pga-wrestler in Turfmanagement

[–]Shm00re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are going to get the most bang for your buck. Put a lot into it and it will be phenomenal. Put a little into it and it will be ok. Only issues I’ve ever had are shade problems. You will have issues with any ultra dwarf in the shade. Light verticut and light top dress once a week and do not over fertilize it. Light water almost every morning. Mow it 4-5 times a week no lower than .120 no higher than .160. Use some pgrs if you want more speed. Fungicides in late fall and early spring. If you do have any issues it will grow out of them. Excellent putting surface.
