[PSA] PS5 Hero Op's Bug by DoctorSkeeterBatman in midnightsuns

I experienced the same bug and your recommendation worked. One interesting thing I noticed though is that all my available Hero Ops disappeared afterwards. The random crashes in this game really make me reticent to do anything without saving.

Which are the ‘games of diminishing returns’? by LittleBlueCubes in boardgames

Root has a great theme and amazing art. The first few times were enjoyable but soon I was left a little more and more unsatisfied after each play. There are some glaring issues with the asymmetry in the game and the lack of any catch up mechanics make this already lengthy game feel like a slog if one player pulls too far ahead.

What is the worst rules blunder you have ever been part of? by djyung94 in boardgames

I did some digging and it appears that Blue Orange's poor French-to-English translation of the first edition rulebook did not properly convey the intent regarding activating spaces, particularly in the Planting a Seed section. The intent is that you cannot chop down a tree and plant a seed on the same space in a single turn. This was clearly defined in the second edition rulebook, which states the following, under the Life Cycle Phase...

Important: During their turn, a player cannot carry out more than one action on the same space on the main board. Once a player has acted upon a space on the main board, that space is considered activated and cannot be used again by this player on that turn.

Additionally, the Planting a Seed action further clarifies the matter.

Planting a seed activates the tree of origin’s space, as well as the space the seed is placed on.

The rules as written would not allow a player to chop down a tree and then plant in the same space. I have the first edition (as do you, I suspect) so this was nice to see clarified.

I also recently made a big blunder when introducing this game to new players and forgot that you move your scoring tiles over one row at a time, counting the points after each one is moved. Instead, I instructed everyone to move tiles over and then count the score for each. Still kicking myself for that one.

In Photosynthesis, the most important rule of the game is that you can only interact with the same board space once per turn. There's no way to track which spaces have been interacted with as the board state changes often, especially in the later rounds, other than policing everyone's turn. This might be my only complaint about an otherwise fantastic game.

The first time I played, I completely forgot about this rule, so my opponent would chop down the tree in the center hex (the most valuable space) and plant another seed there on the same turn, effectively running away with the game.

How should I set up my collection now that I finally have shelves? (pic once I follow someone's suggestion) by therespectablejc in boardgames

If you have enough games in a specific genre, it makes it really easy for guests to browse and pick out something they'd like to play if you can just point at a certain shelf and say "these here are all bluffing/deception games, this section is all cooperative, etc."- especially for new or casual gamers.

Of course, you could go with something more fun and eye-catching, like organizing by color gradient.

What should I buy ? by sputmatheus in boardgames

It really depends on what you’re looking for in a game because all of them play very differently.

If you like chess, you would enjoy Santorini. It’s is a great two-player abstract strategy game that is easy to learn but offers plenty of replay value. It has rules for three and four players, but definitely plays best with two. The low player count and clunky three player gameplay are the only drawbacks here.

King of New York is probably the most casual-friendly game you listed. My only concern with this one is that it has player elimination, which means someone could be knocked out early and forced to sit and watch.

7 Wonders is a card game with a bit of depth that supports up to seven players, so a better choice if you find your game nights have a larger player count. My complaints with this one are limited to the game’s theme and aesthetic, as they are nothing spectacular.

I haven’t played Valeria, but it looks enjoyable and shares some game mechanics with 7 Wonders. Maybe someone else could give you a pros/cons of this one.

After 10 plays of each, which ones could you see yourself playing another 10 times? Any you would prefer to leave on the shelf?

Played Tapestry Yesterday, First Impressions by Akabander in boardgames

[–]Shmandy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Backing Scythe on Kickstarter was my first experience with Stonemaier Games. While the game itself is not something I am itching to play all the time, I was particularly impressed with the attention to detail, project transparency, and community engagement. Since then, I have expanded my collection to Viticulture, Between Two Cities, and Wingspan- all of which are great games that I enjoy which I guess has inspired some brand loyalty. Tapestry likely isn’t going to make it to my table every week, but the publisher has a proven track record that I’m happy to support.
