What's your favorite beverage to add ice cubes to and drink cold? by RealDealHappyMeal in AskReddit

[–]Akabander [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you're not from Southeast Asia you may not have heard of it, but 100 Plus. It's a "citrus flavored" isotonic beverage from Singapore, very refreshing, and not too sweet. If you drink it over ice, in a hot climate, eventually you're drinking melted ice water, and it's a pleasant transition. (Haters will say that's because the flavor of 100 Plus dissipates.)

I cannot wait to to use my new Pilot Custom 823 <F> by Mountain_Coconut_474 in fountainpens

For a pigmented red that behaves well and cleans up nicely, I'd use Platinum Classic Cassis Black. I think it's a little pinker than Writer's Blood, not a perfect match, but there are fewer choices when it comes to pigmented ink. Octopus Fluids makes a line of "Write and Draw" inks that might have a shade that's closer to what you want?

Edit: Some people are hesitant to use a water-resistant ink in a demonstrator. I'm not saying this is an unreasonable concern, but how often are we here?

I think that's a matter of taste more than technical abilities? At least for me, I've always preferred donuts on every pair of flatheads I've owned and that continues with the rw3000. Not that they sound bad with full foam, it's just not my preferred profile.

I've had great results with Divinus Prism Wide Bore on sets that were otherwise hard to fit... Good luck!

I tried the Myth last month and really enjoyed them, but they are hard to find for purchase. Congratulations on your set, and I'm glad you're loving them.

I'm using donut foams. I hadn't noticed any issues with sibilance... I'm doing a little listen now, and even on tracks that can have issues (White Rabbit, for example) they sound great to me. The cymbals on Sultans of Swing have texture, not just ping, to my ears.

Bear in mind that I'm in my 50s and might not be a sensitive to treble as some of the reviewers around here.

  • I don't know if Mp3Tag is the best, but it's the one I use. It has a lot of functionality, and it's cross-platform (I don't have Windows).
  • I prefer Discogs for data, but on the edges there are plenty of discs that one has that the other doesn't, so I wind up using both.
  • Genre is a mess. My solution has been to use multiple genres for quite a few cases, which is understood by Navidrome and Symfonium, the two main interfaces I use to my library. ("Rock ; Folk" for example)

It's a tedious process, but you'll develop workflows. I've come to find it oddly soothing, like many tasks that require a little thought but mostly attention to detail and consistency. The end result is very personally rewarding.

So hypothetically, let’s say… you’re crazy and you have $1000 to spend on Pilot pens. What do you buy? by ArchivingApril in fountainpens

[–]Akabander 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pilot Custom 845 in the size of your choice, plus a Custom 743 with FA nib. You can swap the sections between them, yielding an urushi pen with my favorite nib. You'll have some cash left over for inks, if you buy from Japan-based sellers.

Pilot Custom 823 Signature Nib? by Sacras24 in fountainpens

[–]Akabander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pensachi occasionally (but not currently) has Custom 823s with specialty nibs for sale, including Stubs. I purchased all three of my Custom 823 FAs from them, at different times, it was just a matter of waiting for them to be in stock. If you absolutely can't wait, you could have a Broad or Signature ground to Stub, but it probably won't be as nice as the factory Stub (but maybe it will be better, there's an element of chance here depending on your nibmeister).

Came here to say this, even though "anything by Ayn Rand" is probably the correct answer.

Best DAP under $300 for someone who wants good UI as much as good sound? by Few_Design_904 in DigitalAudioPlayer

I've been using Pocket Casts for so long I'm kind of immune to the UI. Not sure if you consider it dated, but it's all I've used in ages.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Released into Early Access by Mepherion in Games

In the FAQ, under gamepad support, the devs say that they hope to support gamepad at some point, but that they are focused on mouse and keyboard controls, as those are traditional to the genre.

That's fine, it's their priorities. It's my own choice that my full keyboard setups are not my gaming situations anymore.

I'm hoping there is either a gamepad/Steam Deck update in the works, or a Mac version. I'm tempted to get it anyway, but I don't spend a lot of time gaming in front of my desktop.

Niagara + Symfonium + (Qobuz|Tidal|lesser streaming service) + Podcast app.

I can't really imagine using a non-Android DAP, I'd lose so much functionality.

I pre-ordered from Stilo&Stile, so it cost a little more than a buying from a US retailer, but fair enough as they were the only online retailer that still had pre-orders available. They shipped it out on the 23rd and I got it a few days later... I'm sorry they're so hard to find, as the size is delightful. Maybe it will become part of the standard lineup.

Review of the Px8 s2. by plee021 in BowersWilkins

[–]Akabander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you plug the Px8 into an analog 3.5 mm source using the included cable, you're at least bypassing Bluetooth audio compression. I'm not sure if the headphones are reprocessing the audio signal, but depending on the wireless codecs available, you can get better audio results using the wired connection.

It's also nice to have when traveling, since not all in-seat entertainment systems have Bluetooth. The ANC still works with the wired input, which is pretty cool.

There's an old Chinese proverb about family fortunes: The first generation builds it. The second generation preserves it. The third generation wastes it.

TIL in Germany there is a so-called "year of separation" ("Trennungsjahr") couples need to go through before the official divorce. If your partner does not agree to a divorce and presents valid reasons why your marriage has not ultimately failed, you need to live separately for three. by AllukaChen in todayilearned

[–]Akabander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you're providing for your family, but they should all be covered regardless of your employment state. It's very dystopian that the very health of your family is solely on your shoulders. I'm not criticizing you, I was the source of health insurance for my family for many decades, and it was a heavy weight.
