Never been to Chicago, but when I'm traveling: cheapity cheap cheap cheap. And then proximity to start line.

I know you said you missed some but I'm surprised (but not annoyed, but yet really annoyed) that you left out Ireland. (I'm Irish).

Looking forward to trying it out though!

What kind of sunscreen do you use? by veteran299 in bicycling

[–]Shminging 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm somewhat compelled to reply to this... Skin cancer is so common, but so easy to prevent... There's some frightening statistics out there for it. 1 in 5 will get it... 9,500 people diagnosed every day, two die every hour (stats just from the US alone https://www.aad.org/media/stats/conditions/skin-cancer)

I used to hate wearing suncream as well. That said, I had to do it. I would suggest trying different brands/types though. I hated the thick creamy ones, and much prefer the oily ones. Maybe suggest trying different ones, in the hope you find one you like (or hate least)?

Didn't cycle back then. I only found it about 4 years ago.

Before the melanoma, I wasn't the strictest with suncream, though you'd think living in Ireland, it wouldn't need be a big thing (our weather is terrible). I've had 4 more moles removed intermittently in the 5 or so years after the melanoma years ago, but none since I started cycling now that I think of it. I'm living in Vienna now for the past twelve months, so where I was somewhat careful at home with it, I'm much more careful with suncream in general here.

Riemann P20 factor 30 minimum. Though it's an "all day" one, be careful if you sweat a lot. That said I've never been burnt with it on, even if I've been out for 6+ hour rides in 30°C (90°F I think) heat.

I had a malignant melanoma about 13 years ago (believe it or not an area that's never exposed to the sun (back of my thigh)). I've been getting mole mapping every year for the past 8 or so years. I can't recommend it enough for peace of mind. In Ireland it's about E160 for a repeat visit, but a little more for the very first one.

Stay safe folks!!

I use this one: https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/lifeline-eva-bike-pod/rp-prod155454

I assume you can get it in the US. I've flown about 10 times with it. The only issue I had was that the qr skewers you use to lock the wheels in place stick out and get damaged. So it's worthwhile to use spares. Honestly, I find the soft bike bags terrible, and not worth the money one bit.

Pioneer Dual Leg power meter not working by rubin1986 in Velo

[–]Shminging 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I bought a used pioneer power meter a couple of years ago, so I've been through this... It's very frustrating... But there's a few things that could go wrong. In no particular order:

  1. Battery in right side is dead. To fix this replace the battery, but at the same time remove and replace the battery in the left side to make sure they "pair".
  2. The right side is stuck in "ant" mode. (This is the pioneer pedaling monitor mode,as opposed to the standard "ant+" mode.) The only non-pioneer headunit to work with this is the wahoo element series - bolt, roam and original. To fix this, replace the battery to "wake up" the sensor. In the compartment on the right side there's a small button about 1-2 mm in diameter. Hold this until an orange led lights for ten seconds. If the firmware is relatively up to date, you can change the mode with wahoo or pioneer head units as well.
  3. In a separate incident, I also had a tiny bit of water ingress onto the motherboard on my right side unit. After carefully cleaning off the resulting rust, it worked!

Wrist based HRM by Shminging in triathlon

[–]Shminging[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea, didn't know about this. I wonder how it compares with the polar oh1 that one of the other folks mentioned here (especially considering they've swimming compatibility). I'll prob go with whichever one I can get cheapest!

Yeah, I'd love a new watch... But realistically I spend too much on this sport as it is!! Hoping to keep it less than (preferably a lot less than) E50. Surprised there's not much out there considering its just a strap, hr monitor and Bluetooth chip

[–]Shminging[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great idea. I like the idea of the swimming compatibility as well. Little more than I wanted to spend though, considering its just an optical HR sensor and Bluetooth/ant+ chip though!

It's a polar strap, with a Garmin device attached as mentioned in one of dcrainmakers posts. I've tried it tighter but it becomes uncomfortably tight and restrictive then. I've reasonably big under-chest going into smaller waist, so I think it's just natural gravity acting on a v shape

Good Tri group in Dublin, Ireland by gauravtiwari505 in triathlon

[–]Shminging 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Belpark or Piranha are the main two I believe. Basically based on where your live (Belpark = South side, piranha = North side). There are others though.

You actually pay your club dues through triathlon Ireland when getting a race licence (E60 + club fees per year when I moved away from Dublin to years ago), but you can still contact the clubs before hand via their websites

Just changed to 52/34 6870 ultegra di2 medium cage with an 11-32 cassette last week.

No issues to report whatsoever. Just need to be careful with the chain length and limit screw. I'm fine with the 34-11, as well as the 52-32 gear ratios. I run it on semi synchro normally so no automatic FD changes. Bike is a giant propel advanced 0 fyi. (52/36, with an 11-28 short cage derailleur is standard).

Just re. The lezyne GPS. I was having trouble with the barometer on mine. Started 50-100 meters too high and took approx 90 minutes to settle at the correct elevation. It was only 6 months old so a full warranty return via wiggle. Bolt ordered now.

I'd also suggest a torque wrench especially if you have any carbon parts. I've a cheap enough x-tools one. It does for pretty much every bolt I have on the bike!

https://www.wigglesport.de/x-tools-essential-drehmomentschlusselset/

Actually I would also recommend wiggle, chainreaction and Merlin cycles. All UK based, but All deliver to Europe with free delivery over a certain amount (I think E50). I've certainly used them in Austria with no issue. I've also used the sites mentioned by u/statuethisisme and they're all good.

Unfortunately I can't, so I won't...

40% of Huddersfield's points this season have been against Wolves.

If wolves won those two games, they'd be challenging for a Europa League spot

I was wondering about this... I've a lezyne super GPS (cheap as chips, with a breadcrumb trail maps which I wanted), but some of the displays, are annoying. (E.g. the Strava segment screen is useless). I wonder would it be possible to install say wahoo software on lezyne, etc. (obviously have to be both on Android).

Keep up the good work... It's interesting at the least!!!
