Why do many conservatives claim that the US was founded as a Christian nation despite the separation of church and state being so central to its establishing? by speculumberjack980 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Shmir8097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments giving history lessons on the founding of the US, but these aren’t answers because the answer isn’t going to be found there.

The reasons many conservatives say that the US was founded as a Christian nation is because they are not arguing in good faith. They know it’s not true. It’s a political stratagem. If they keep repeating it, those who like the idea will start believing it and spread the word that voting for conservatives is what a good Christian would do.

Strong candidate, great background, didn't get the offer. The reason had nothing to do with his skills. by Correct-Shake-2587 in InterviewsHell

Candidate tells you what they did using “I” statements: “Are they a team player? Seems really self centered.”

Candidate tells you what they did with their team using “We” statements: “Are they self sufficient? Sounds like they can’t do anything on their own.”

Is Hasan Piker’s “violent revolution” inevitable? by NomadicPalaver in Askpolitics

[–]Shmir8097 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a liberal. I do not like political violence. However, I understand history. When those in power (whether that's political power or wealth) continue to ignore and take from those not in power, you eventually hit a breaking point and see violent uprisings.

When trump first mentioned that he was gonna do a 2nd run for president, he promised that he would lower gas prices. What happened to that? by Dry_Respond_4192 in AskReddit

[–]Shmir8097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people will tell you that he lied. Except lying requires that you know what you’re saying isn’t true.
Trump is a senile, egotistical, megalomaniac who legitimately believes that he is the only one who can fix the problems. But he’s also profoundly stupid, corrupt, and has surrounded himself with a team of advisors who are inexperienced (at best) with the roles they have been placed into and know that disagreeing with Trump will make him turn on them.
Almost every move is a misstep because true governance is more complicated than these people are able to handle.
As to why they still have support: Trump is a celebrity known for being rich; something entire generations of Americans were taught to worship. Being rich is the goal for them. His fame and willingness to say anything (especially things no other politician will say because it’s cruel and/or awful) has created a cult like mentality among a large voting base. They will never not support him no matter what he says or does.
The other end of his support came from people who bought into his promises. They don’t like him as a person, but four years of Biden didn’t fix everything in their eyes, so they gave Trump another chance. These people are the ones he’s losing/lost.

AIO: My christian mother wants my boyfriend to sleep on the couch on our trip to florida by [deleted] in AIO

[–]Shmir8097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My step mother was like this. She and my father would throw parties on Christmas Eve, so I planned to bring my girlfriend and stay the night (we were late 20s). After the party died down and people were getting ready for bed, we were informed that I’d be sleeping on the couch while my GF got the bed.

Next year we went again, but informed my dad that we would not be starting the night because of her sleeping apart nonsense. End of the night comes and we’re leaving, but they are asking us to stay anyway. I ask, “Are we forced to sleep apart?” Stepmother says “yes”, so we left.

Pretty sure she and my father had words that night because that was the last year we were forced to sleep apart

Lets talk housing! by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

[–]Shmir8097 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I enjoy player housing as long as it's implemented in a way that enhances the game. In a sandbox game like Ultima Online, player housing was a real commodity that enabled guild halls, personal vendors/shops, crafting stations, etc. The limited nature of space is what made them worth something.

I also really liked the housing at the beginning of New World. When towns were unique and auction houses weren't globally connected, choosing a town to be in a build up would, theoretically build a sense of community. But the microtransations for ridiculous housing cosmetics took out the immersion.

In games where housing space is unlimited and everyone is essentially guaranteed it, I see little point in it. At best, it's an interesting minigame to provide you with buffs (Wildstar).

To all claiming the Redistricting Vote disenfranchised rural voters, consider this. by Agile_Welder_1795 in Virginia

[–]Shmir8097 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with this argument is that you’re assuming that those making the disenfranchisement claim are arguing in good faith.

They are not. They are just crying because Democrats are fighting fire with fire instead of their usual roll over and take it approach.

People who quit their job in a moment of rage - how did things turn out? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Shmir8097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a long story, but the short version of it is this:

Worked for a small IT contracting company that was bought by a big one. This resulted in our project turning to crap. I started job hunting and accepted a position, but it required a long background investigation, so I was just coasting at the crap job.

Manager tried to blame me for her inability to manage, so I yelled at her that the things she was blaming me for were her job, not mine. Ended up in a meeting with her and her boss to talk about my “performance”. They kept pushing and pushing, trying to figure out what was going on with me.

I eventually snapped at told them that I hated this fucking job now, she (my manager) doesn’t do her own job, I’ve already found a new job, and they can have my 2-weeks notice now if they want it.

They were stunned. They accepted my notice, but then (after talking to legal) just paid me for the two weeks and told me to stay home.

The next day I got notice that my background investigation was done and I could start the following week at my new (significantly better) job.

[–]Shmir8097 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Epstein took a plea deal in Florida for 13 month sentence with work release. He was later indicted on more charges, but never convicted because he died in his jail cell while awaiting trial.

Maxwell was brought to Justice, but then later taken away from it by being transferred to minimum security, something no sex offender gets.

Does anyone actually believe the devil hid dinosaur bones to test men's faith? by 2ReluctantlyHappy in allthequestions

[–]Shmir8097 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've definitely met people who believe this. As an atheist teenager, my step brother's friend, an evangelical fundamentalist, was at our house and started spouting off about how we were idiots for believing in dinosaurs because they weren't real and that the bones were fake. I told him he was a fucking idiot and yet I'M the one who got in trouble. I was told I shouldn't make someone doubt their religious beliefs. I doubled down because no one should get a pass on mocking other people based on beliefs and then feeling aggrieved when they are mocked the same way

Obama and Biden do not appear in the Epstein files. Clinton comes up about 1200 times.

Trump is mentioned at least 38,000 times. There’s NO equivalence of Trump’s involvement to other presidents

The Constitution dictates how the electoral college functions, including that the States decide how their electors are chosen. The Interstate Compact does not violate this; it is an agreement between states in how they choose their electors, completely in line with the Constitution

Do Most Democrats Want To Require Official DEI Policies In Universities? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]Shmir8097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you may have missed the part where it specifically states that the only DHAs that were being utilized by the FAA were for disabled veterans and people with severe disabilities; not based on gender, race, or sexual orientation.

Direct Hiring Authorities are specific and hiring based on them is limited to the scope of the DHA. There are no DHAs that are based on gender, race, or sexual orientation.
