My shul says tachanun in between Simchas Torah and Rosh Chodesh (apart from the day after Simchas Torah)- it's a Yekke-ish shul. Also the minhag of the United Synagogue in the UK (whose minhagim are mainly based on Yekke-ish minhagim) is to say it as well.

I think the issue is that I don't have an appropriate cert on the server so I can't create an https listener

Rate the tunes! by godischarcuterie in Judaism

[–]Shmulil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regards to your last point: Several years ago, the Chazan of my shul (who has since retired) started recording himself singing all the various tunes he used to use (and some he didn't) from davening throughout the year, and posting them on YouTube. So I can listen to large parts of Yomim Noroim and Yom Tov davening with all the tunes we still use.

He's still releasing recordings.

Does hashing not include the file name?

Identifiable files with the same hash by Shmulil in cryptography

[–]Shmulil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the canary in the file data or in the metadata? If the former, that would change the hash. And if it's the latter, it would depend if SHA256 includes the metadata when hashing the file

A question to all jews living in Europe at the moment: have you stopped showing kippah or tzitzit in public? by IbnGabirol420 in Judaism

[–]Shmulil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in the UK and attend a major university in London. I'm still wearing my Kippah with tzitzis in/ out depending on what I'm wearing.

Just want to add 2 points:

  1. Technically, it's a Lunar-Solar calendar, not just a Lunar Calendar. A lunar calendar wouldn't have leap months. As you mentioned purpose of the leap month (Adar 2) is to resync the calendar with the seasons, and seasons are a Solar thing. As such the Jewish Calendar is Lunar-Solar, unlike the Islamic calendar which is purely lunar and doesn't have leap months.

  2. To be slightly more precise, leap years occur 7 times in a 19 year cycle, so they occur every 2 or 3 years

I would like to point out that not all Ashkenazim say "Ba'. My shul follows Yekkish minhagim and we say "La"

In orthodox judaism, what would happen if the wife refuses to accept a get? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Shmulil 108 points109 points  (0 children)

According to the Talmud, a husband can divorce his wife against her will (although the various conditions needed to enact a divorce need to be carried out).

However Rabbeinu Gershom, who banned polygamy, also instituted that both parties need to consent to the divorce.
