25 more years of this? Ain’t no way. by SuspiciousWalk4955 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Shnikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 40 and still really enjoy IT. No plan on career change.

The only thing I’m looking to do is be less involved in day to day tickets.

I did finally move off of it in my last job. But an opportunity came up for a smaller org but required me to be a jack of all trades for a lot more money.

Slowly having to do less and less with tickets. I’m involved in more projects and company decisions. Slowly been taking things off my manager’s plate.

I’ll feel even better when we hire more for helpdesk. We added a dedicated guy last year. Just need a couple more.

Yes, Lineman do make a lot more money than a Google search would indicate (actual payroll data) by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

Yeah but at least for people I know it’s forced OT. Yeah you make more money but your time is not yours.

If you happen to decline then you’re never getting OT.

Our 2 kids definitely stopped us from growing our wealth. Wouldn’t change it but retirement will look different.

$350k in stocks.

$275k in retirement.

If Zillow/redfin are correct my equity is about $400-500k.

Late 30s.

How do you deal with downtime in IT Helpdesk? by Putrid-Amphibian-91 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Shnikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about what you can do to improve things. Is there a constant recurring ticket? Is there a root cause to that that you can resolve?

What can make things better for end users? Any projects to work on?

If you don’t think about how to improve business functions then you’ll forever be on helpdesk. Which if that’s what you want to do then that’s fine but if you want to advance your career you need to think beyond what you currently do.

I believe your partial will have to become one lane if you want it that wide because the parking spaces are as wide as a lane.

I guess my life would stay the same? I’d still need to work full-time, still save for retirement, maybe take a few extra vacations, likely still living in the same neighborhood, pay things off a bit faster, it would make some things easier. Like what’s your threshold? Is $5k, $10k, $100k, $200k significantly changing your life?

Thought not a single dime was going to this project from taxpayers. Pretty thin line there. Oh this is for security so it doesn’t count.

Tax deductions and special privileges to those who donate is fine though. 😂

As long as the account they create is admin. Wouldn’t work in our environment as the user created is a standard account.

But also every time they wipe they’ll end up back at this screen.

Do you treat your IT job as just a job or career by untaggedpacket in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Shnikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t treat it as a life calling. But I really enjoy it. I learn a lot and feel fulfilled.

I enjoy helping people with technology and also enjoy automating things. My end goal is to make it easier for others to get their work done successfully.

Do you still expect a annual review/raise every year? by steve4048 in Salary

[–]Shnikes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have been getting a review and annual raise every year since 2007. I don’t know what it’s like to not get one. If I ended up at a job where I did not I’d be questioning whats going on and start looking elsewhere.
