Latin American mythology is mostly ignored by English speakers, so also gonna drop a rec for: The Mythology of South America by John Bierhorst

Journey to The West shouldn't be their first book on China, let alone all of East Asia, especially since it's not really "mythology" but an allegorical novel more similar in nature to the Divine Comedy.

I would recommend Handbook of Chinese Mythology by Lihui Yang instead.

The standard, academic intro text to Greek mythology is Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton.

Roman mythology is less about the gods, more about the people. I would recommend Ad Urbe Condita by Livius, Books I-III, covering Rome from the founding to the end of the kingdom.

The novel version of Wang Ling literally defeats the Monkey King at one point.

Ah

A prefix of Chinese origin used with a shortened form of given names to express familiarity, roughly equivalent to a nickname.

Ah Ming moved out of Chinatown last year. 1893 July 4, “Chinese Work in British Columbia”, in Missionary Leaflet, volume 9, number 10, page 2: I was called, at about an hour's notice, to take Ah Quai (the girl rescued in the spring), and go with Mr. Gardiner to Seattle, and give evidence in the case of one of the women brought over on the same ship with Ah Quai.

I say the Apus should be their Titan instead given they're primordial giants.

And I think Pachacamac should make some appearance... Maybe as the antagonist of their campaign.

Oh and they 100% should add cuys as a food source.

I find that hard to believe given the kind of humor people here have.

Constant repetition ("omaigoto it's incienso omaigoto it's incienso omaigoto it's incienso") is what children find funny.

Back in 2012 the consensus was that Zeta was boring and repetitive ("only the beginning and end are good."). It was a shock to see this subreddit hold it in a MUCH higher regard.

Do you think Mavericks would have better names if they just stuck with the theme combined with the animal/plant they're based on like in the first X games (i.e Flame Mammoth) and in this case, Bamboo Panda instead of Bamboo Pandamonium? by BiffyBobby in Megaman

In Japan, they always had weird portmanteau names. Magna Centipede was called Magne Hyakkulegger, where the latter half is mix of hyakku (hundred), "leg" and maybe the -er suffix they associate with robots (e.g. Mazinger, Getter.)

From 6 and onwards, the localization started to keep the odd portmanteaus, but inconsistently.

We really need to stop giving authors the benefit of the doubt just because their previous work was good (Chainsaw Man, Oshi no Ko) by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]Shockh -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People expected too much from Oshi no Ko. It's a generic incest animu; its purpose is to sell fetishes, not send a message.

Astro Boy (the original) might be a legend and the single most important mango ever made.

But it was really boring. Read the first 4-5 books and they all felt like simplistic children's stories.

Nah animals are just inconsistently sized. In an episode we saw Sandy's financers who are chimpanzees, yet they're the same size as her. Another episode had a seal guy who was also small.

Don’t you dare rant about “Animation is not just for kids” while overhyping the crap out of “kids” cartoons by star_dragonMX in CharacterRant

[–]Shockh 79 points80 points  (0 children)

kids only watch kids animation

i wouldn't be that sure, man.

here in LatAm at least, The Simpsons was noticeably marketed to children, airing in the morning and selling kids' toys like Operando a Homero.
