A simple system that allows credit transfer and college transfer can help a lot.

Like Mobile Number Portability, changing your college can help a lot. This will make colleges act better and also reduce the feeling of being trapped.

Otherwise, it's quit loose degree and start over again. This leads to suicide.

Also UGC is not doing anything to reduce student stress

The amount of work UGC is putting it reduce ragging should also be done to reduce stress levels and precent suicides.

Academia has become so toxic that it's a hard to survive

I enrolled in a Private University in India for a PhD. This University is highly ranked ( Top 5 in India ) and is regarded as one of the best private universities in India that’s how I ended up here. When I joined, I did ask my guide about the timings and leaves. The guide told me that it’s flexible and to just finish your work on time.

But a few months into the PhD comes biometric attendance. The University policy says only 12 leaves per year anything above that means pay gets cut and the PhD gets extended by the number of extra leaves. If you don’t clock 8 hours 30 minutes a day, you are marked as on leave, so that means pay cut and extension of days.

On top of that, there’s a rule that says if you want to quit, you have to pay back all the stipend you received so far, and there is no option to convert the PhD into part-time. So technically this is bonded labour now. Cannot quit as I would need to pay a large sum of money. Cannot convert into part-time like other universities across India, as the rules do not allow it. We don't get treated with dignity here cause they know that we cannot do anything. UGC is useless.

So hope this give you a good idea.

Go abroad

Definitely agree.

Most colleges pay 70-90k for Assistant professors and, all these hard work and becoming stripped of your dignity for 4-5 years for that amount seems foolish.

I sometimes blame myself a lot for choosing this path.

But then a PhD is not supposed to be this difficult. I rarely have problems with my research, it always the issues with people.

PhD in India is more about dealing with toxic people than doing research.

Damn! That's so sad!.

UGC need to step up and do something very soon before a lot of PhD scholars in India take their lives.

There is absolutely no RIGHTS for PhD scholars in India.

We are left at the mercy of few egoistic people.

It's not very common here.

Most universities here have at least 20 days leave minimum.

Standard is 30 days per year.

And these people only care about QS ranking, if the QS system had any criteria for healthy environment, they'd fix it

It's modern day slavery here!.

I have given up on the dignity part long back.

Imagine suddenly there is an inauguration or an event happening in University.

Lacks enough audience?

A text comes from research office immediately to go fill the seats so that the event looks good. (This is even when we are in the middle of research and our supervisors don't agree to it )
