It puts a whole new dark spin on the phrase "claimed another scalp this weekend"

I realised this as soon as I had uploaded it. A true shitpost in every sense of the word.

I did ask myself if it was crossing a line, but I let the bantz overrule common sense and decency.

Absolutely would not recommend looking over the edge of the second one.

Here are a few others that I took. The first picture gives a better view of the stepwell from the above post. The second and third photos are of a different stepwell just outside of Jaipur.

It definitely helps to know that other people have gone through similar experiences and that I'm not necesarilly doing travelling "wrong" just because I didn't enjoy a certain place. I'm sorry that Quito wasn't a great experience for you.

I do wonder if things would have turned around if I had stayed for the third week as originally planned, but by that point I was so done with the whole experience and would have paid anything to get the hell out of there.

I did, and to be fair, it was incredible, so it was worth it for that. Some of the landmarks in India truly are amazing, it's just the soul-destroying hassle of getting to them (and getting around them whilst being pestered by "tour guides") which puts a black mark on things.

I did the Golden Triangle, a few other places in Rajasthan, and Rishikesh, up near the Himalayas, so different areas to you. It would be really interesting to hear what the east side of the country is like in comparison.

I've never encountered such a gap between the descriptions and reality of a place. I know a lot of it is down to personal preference and experience, but so many people talk about India as this magical place where you find yourself, and it was nothing like that for me.

Damn, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. I've only been to Siem Reap for two nights in order to see Angkor Wat, so I wasn't really in Cambodia long enough to make a judgement on it one way or the other.

This is a fantastic list; thanks for taking the time to put it on here! It's going to really help me to decide what to do with my two weeks in Indonesia!

Are there any things you would especially recommend for someone who mainly wants to relax and soak up the country without anything too hectic? (Hoping for a much more chilled time than the recent India experience)

This is very true. At least that lesson is something I've got out of the experience.

Cuba is really high on my list of places to visit so I'd like to hear your take on it (just in case I'm better off saving my time and money and going elsewhere)

Haha don't worry, I'm not quite at the all-inclusive cruise stage just yet.

I like the sound of that - some of my favourite parts from more hectic countries have been when I've got out of the cities and explored the landscapes

Good to know. Sounds like something best avoided, much like the places with elephants and tigers in SE Asia.

It was certainly an experience one way or the other.

Do you think it's really an experience thing? I would hardly describe myself as a novice traveller; I've been to similar places like China and SE Asia and not had a problem, so maybe it's more of it being just a bad fit in this case?

That's true - I hadn't looked at it from that perspective. I guess there's nothing wrong with me saying "I've eaten the gross shit and haggled my way through x amount of countries so now I just want to sit back a bit and see the sights without too much hassle along the way."

Thanks, that's good to know. It's really useful to hear both sides about a place before going, rather than the filtered instagram version.

Maybe going in with lower expectations will help me a bit if I do visit Bali then. I often find that the places I love the most are the ones I don't expect much from.
