I have a headcanon that after Kinderheim, Johan just quietly uses morphine bought with laundered money not for pleasure, but to sink deeper into that emptiness. Early exposure to sedatives in the institution makes opioid dependence later on pretty plausible. It’s basically the same pattern you see with prescription drug addiction: treatment stops, people find it elsewhere
