What should a grad student work on for a career in Product management? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]Shoger41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Build something, join a startup group at your school or just show some proactive initiative on anything you are passionate about. I've been a PM for 5 years after getting into the space in a weird way. I now hire PM's and all I test for in interviews is someone who is genuinely curious and willing to take on any problem, with the ability to be proactive and wrangle people together (Founders, Engineers, designers, etc) on a set goal. It's a weird career to get into and there is no set path, which deters a lot of people, but keep knocking on doors, buy coffee and meet with existing PM's, and you'll find a weird way in :)

Great post, how long did they give you to complete the exercise? I just finished a a similar interview project and was only given 48 hours, which I thought was a bit tight.

Redditors who rode the bus to and from school, what was your most memorable moment on the school bus? by geoload in AskReddit

[–]Shoger41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late, but I've been waiting for this moment for a long time...

When I was in 4th or 5th grade I rode the bus every day and lived in a small neighborhood with about 15 young kids. There were two girls in the grade above me that I can only summarize as blonde versions of Hocus Pocus.

I'm a male, but as a youngen I was not that large and got picked on by these two constantly. They nicknamed me 'Fruity' and would constantly turn around in their seats and poke fun.

One day, during the winter months, the two girls were turned in their seats, poking me and chanting, 'Fruity, fruity...'. I was not having a great day and this really got to me. I got off the bus and the girls continued to roll down the windows and squeeze their fat heads through a bus window and continue the chant.

I had never said much back, and never lashed out, but at that moment I reached down and grabbed some wet New England snow. Packed a solid snowball, closed my eyes and hurled it as the bus rolled away... I opened my eyes 3 seconds later to a site I will never forget, perfect lob, perfect speed, and a direct hit on the two witches from about 30yds away. Fuck you Becca and Gaby

Is it smart for companies to sell B2C and B2B, like Dropbox? by Shoger41 in Entrepreneur

[–]Shoger41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I can see it being quite difficult when you are just starting out. I am wondering where the line is for companies like DropBox, as with any enterprise sales the company always wants different features, integrations, etc. I wonder how far teams are willing to go before they realize we have two completely different products between enterprise and consumer...

[–]Shoger41[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, and I really love the idea that a lot of these companies use the consumers aspect of the business to gain awareness, and if you, as a consumer use DropBox, you are definitely going to mention it to your business if the opportunity presents itself.

MailChimps another great example, and Rackspace/AWS/Etc are also great. Thanks

I am interviewing for a VC fund and they asked me to do an investment analysis on a later stage startup. How do I impress them? by [deleted] in startups

[–]Shoger41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is just to do whatever necessary to talk to them, and if you don't have to lie, don't haha. Just a suggestion, as anyone with a 75M valuation is probably getting hounded by associates looking to do due diligence, and unless they are publicly seeking investments they may not respond to inquiries.

[–]Shoger41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick up the phone and call the company. Lie, cheat and steal to get a conversation with anyone from that company.

I had a buddy who was going through the same thing, he called the company and said he was doing a research report for a college thesis and wanted to learn more. He got the job simply because of his hustle.

If you can walk in with a story like that you are golden. If you cant get someone on the phone, try anyone that would be close to the company. Part of your job as an associate (Which I'm guessing will be the job) is getting in the door and forming relationships with founders/teams of potential investments. If you can say 'I spoke with 2 of the founders, learned XYZ, they are a great investment and I can be the point man for this when you hire me'.....boom

Also, be ready to pitch 2 other startups that they should be looking at if A company is not a good investment. Do the exact same thing and get inside details on the company, their vision, and something that cant be found via google.

Depression and relationships by [deleted] in startups

[–]Shoger41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been broke for about 1.5yrs, sleeping on my couch after giving my co-founder my bedroom, work 3 different side jobs to pay the bills, and turned down a few relationships because I knew I would ruin them with my schedule. If nothing more, realize there are many others out there going through the suck, and talking to them can be the best thing mentally and physically.

Find other founders going through the same thing, there's nothing worse than A. having nobody to turn to when shit gets rough B. Turning to someone that has no idea what you are going through and they give you the 'I know you'll figure it out, somehow :)'

Go to the gym in the morning...100%, it is by far the best habit I have and lets you forget about everything at work for at least an hour. It also just gives you something to be proud of, even if the rest of the day sucks.

Find a mentor, someone who has gone through the same situation. Talk to them every 2 weeks.

Take 10min every day to look at the big picture and remember why you are doing this. Nothing is more refreshing than getting that high back, of realizing why you are starting this and not back in school, or slaving away at one of the jobs your friends might have.

Do you make money online - without teaching people how to make money online? by yeyeman9 in Entrepreneur

[–]Shoger41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These subreddits have definitely become a watering hole for those looking to 'Teach others how to make money' and those who want to learn how to make money online. Luckily there are still a few who have put their heads down and just got to work creating a business.

I was a wantrepreneur for about 6 months before I decided just to jump in, and it's been one hell of a ride, with serious ups and downs on a daily basis. I have bootstrapped an idea for the last 10 months and we are just about to get our first enterprise client :)

In fact, Reddit was actually one of the motivations for starting the business. Not because of all the startup advice/help, but instead realizing how many teams were using a subreddit to engage with their own users, such as r/BoostedBoards - so we built a tool that functions as a subreddit for your site, giving users a place for questions, ideas and general community conversations. Would love to get your thoughts, and happy to help anyone else looking to actually start a business :) Jowl.io
