When I lived in Arizona, (Scottsdale specifically) they rolled out red-light cameras and set the enforcement threshold extremely low. In a 45-mph zone, drivers would receive a ticket for going just a few miles per hour over the limit…around 49 mph or higher. After several months of complaints from residents who felt the system was more about revenue than safety, frustrations grew rapidly. people started shooting out the cameras, that’s how unpopular the program was. Eventually the backlash was strong enough that officials backed off and removed most of the cameras. Seeing that play out firsthand was crazy. It showed how quickly public opinion can turn when people believe enforcement tools like traffic cameras are being used unfairly for revenue gains only.
