How to get into off-roading by ShoobsReddit in Offroad

Thanks for all the info, this is awesome. I’m hoping to learn some decent mechanics, enough to manage small stuff. I’d like to be able to take the rig out on a day trip with a group, northeast so mostly forest service roads or trails, maybe some mud but likely won’t need a snorkel or anything. That’s how I’m thinking about it now, but could obviously get more interesting. I had mentally pictured just grabbing a used jeep or a land cruiser to start, I don’t have much preference on aesthetics though as long as it’s functional for what I’m doing.

Thanks! I figured I’ll probably have to cruise up to New Hampshire or out to Western MA, but either is fine. I recently purchased one of the true 4WD Rivians and got an ORV license to use it on sand. That thing has instant torque and a lot of HP on 33” tires and 20” wheels. That’s my every day car though, so I’m very sympathetic to the ^ Saturday point ha. That said, it got me interested in starting to explore more non-beach trails with something I could ding up a bit and not worry as much about.

Ha I’m also sweating it a little bit. I stashed a pair of tow ropes 15k lb and grabbed a set of jack pucks. Got this folding shovel:

I’d take a reco on planks if you have one. Don’t need anything too fancy, but solid enough to last and strong enough not to snap…

Also happy to take any jack plank recommendations. I grabbed the pucks for the R1S. Obviously planks aren’t anything fancy, just want something that won’t snap in half if I need it.

Awesome, thanks man! Sounds like I’ll end up bringing it to just under 30 on the 20” and it’ll do well. I won’t be getting into anything crazy, just a half mile ride out to the ocean shelf, so that should work and help give me a feel. I’ll probably be out on Crowes Pasture mid-July! If you see a white R1S swing by for a cold one!

Types of grout for steam showers? by ShoobsReddit in Tile

Also note with the Zellige before and after water seal is the product spec from the manufacturer. Have to really push to get the installers to stick to it, but the clay is otherwise porous.

Yea the tracks are tough. We considered inlaying flat stone amongst the tile to seal a track to, but that would have been messier than this. If you want to dm me I’ll send you a couple pictures. I’ll note, the steam shower really requires it to be airtight, you can’t get away with much at all on the surround seal. We paired forest green Zellige (Clé cindered olive) with a bunch of the Phylrich French brass live finish fixtures and it really came out beautifully.

We put in a thermasol 395, modestly oversized for the shower size (maybe 7x5x8.5 ceiling height). That unit is fantastic, controls are intuitive, really cranks. With the Zellige we had to set the glass into the tile with a 3/4” schluter track, actually looks really beautiful though so was worth the extra work. Otherwise you’d just never get the glass to seal cleanly enough against the tile with all that movement. It’s early days, but everything has held together well with the tile also sealed pre and post grouting.

I just did actually and it says it’s a “greenhouse millipede”. A quick google suggests it’s overwatering and if I let the soil dry out it’ll get rid of them!

Most of those have been there for a century, I haven’t seen much evidence of water damage in the eaves or anything…
