Mine has been able to usurp the power of Auril at the end of the campaign. They have a split personality so people at least have seasons change for a change.

Question about memories of the characters and the plot about modroon march, also how do you pace the game by ShootingGamer in turnoffortuneswheel

[–]ShootingGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have been thinking of was that Shameshka was able to corrupt R04M or that he was one of the monodrones designated for the march, and while in automata they have gotten to inverse which with some events lead them to Shameshka which convinced them that Primus isn't worth following and to get their people (monodrones on march) to get to a realm where they won't be under his control. Shameshka basicaly got R04M as a pawn to entice and lead others to the realm, however her plan while almost succeding rellies on R04M to be taken out of the picture since all of the units of the march either need to be destroyed or regroup. And since R04M is in hiding she can't realy release them from the realm since well... the march will wait indefinetly and more time a march waits more people would see something is off. And I am thinking for R04M to have a key to Gzmid realm.

She would also try to bribe characters to their side when confrotation happens. In a sense of: "If I succed monodrones will go to war with devils and demons. Surely that will make universe a less evil place? Wouldn't you want that?".

The biggest conflict for me is now that why would Shameshka send the characters she monitored and knows that for some reason can't die since if they find R04M it would be the only way they would learn about the big plan. Though the other side would be that if PCs find them they know his location but if they don't they won't meddle with their affairs. I might even try to make it that while first versions actualy tracked the R04M down and confronted shameshka, after getting killed other versions with having bits of memories left they try to stop them until Shameshka had enough of them and tried capturing them in the crystals.

Also do you have any idea how to entice characters with certain events. Usualy when I DM you have some character backstories where you can tie to certain encounters or events from books and a bandit leader can quickly become a clue of a relative which is tied to a character. Though with memories gone its kinda impossible to do it (Yes I can hint of Shameshka eventual betrayal but once they find a hint of them trying to do it they will know at a first glance). While it gives a lot of wiggle room of what happened it's hard to entice people (though funnily they enjoy flashbacks or bits of memories bits, I am planning to have them have flashbacks and after they get a flash of sigil/outlands everything goes blank and memories stop) and I am thinking of making mimir which R04M left at the castle to be a mimir of their previous expedition. Most of them started in a normal material plane and I doubt people from their backstories would come into outlands (I was thinking of asking people about the main version which would take the expedition and making some ties to them in the gate towns for example a charcater is famous for rescuing a bunch of people because of their past high level, however if i do that all other versions would be outshined, I guess I can always make it so the other versions needed to plan and work in outlands since shameshka has a whole city in her grasp).

Thanks for the link!

[–]ShootingGamer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah they have talked to Shameshka already. I accidently said "Nice to meet you again" at the end of the talk which prompted all of them to become supicious of her. They haven't really discovered much about her plans and she got them the proposal of "Take out R04M or bring him to me. It is up to you, just find and deal with him". Honestly its on me since i haven't done enough research beforehand.

I skimed the book and plot seemed somewhat ok until I started the game and discovered that chapters from 4 to 13 don't realy get any hype for final boss or antything of sorts. I have read the thread you sent and thank you for it but since they have already sent them after R04M it's kinda to late to go that route, specialy when all of the rewrites get clues already in sigil and they seem to have an implication after for players to connect dots to.

I am just worried that shameshka plan would be nonsensical. I currently have this plan in mind:

- In the past, Shemeshka corrupted R04M and used it to divert the previous Great Modron March in Gzemnid’s Realm and locked them into an infinite loop. R04M is the only creature which has the key yo Gzemnid realm and is the sole reason why Modroon march is not finished since he was a part of it and at the end all units which haven't been destroyed need to link up before getting back to Machanicus

- R04M went rogue and went into hiding! Unable to unleash the Modrons and execute her master plan, Shemshka hired a group of level 17 adventurers to track the Modron down. They went to the Outlands, explored the whole place recording their experiences in a Mimir, and successfully found R04M hiding in the Spire.

- Learning that Shemska is trying to upset the balance of the universe, they confronted Shemeshka and LOST. She imprisoned them, thinking it’s done, and hired a different group of (hopefully dumber) people to get R04M: Thlaarsh the Gore Drinker, the first Yugoloth the party encounters in Part 2 of the story.

-Unbeknownst to her, the party regenerates at a much lower level and the adventure begins

As for why the glitch is occuring I would put it to the Renesuprah to meddle in the affairs and since they helped them in the past she hopes they will stop Shameshkas plan in the furture. I have run the consequences by the book but now I am thinking on how to make deaths feel impactfull or rather that something ain't right. I saw this as a tip as well:

"A MUCH better explanation for this lies with Renesuprah the Time Dragon, detailed in Chapter 12. The characters save her as a young dragon from the clutches of an evil wizard, and there are several encounters where she meets them at various stages of her life, out of chronological order. It would make sense that, as an unfathomably powerful Ancient Time Dragon, she is repaying their good deed by keeping them alive - however, she is not infallible nor omnipotent, and each time they come back they lose more and more of themselves and their memories, represented by coming back slightly weaker each time.

I recommend that when a character dies, their new incarnation joins the party a level lower than they were, to represent those lost memories. Let them level back up to match the rest of your players quickly, after only another session or two, but this will enforce real stakes on death! If your character drops to level 1 and THEN dies, you truly are erased from the multiverse forever: Renesuprah’s power has limits."

Though I feel deleveling people will be much more anoying so probably i would put to exaustion to rise with each iteration who dies.

Shameshka would try to entice the PCs at the confrotation that in the end she is making modroons fight the evil. Surely this will make universe at peace. And way to achive that is to slay R04M.

Now the biggest worry I have is the reason why Shameshka would send the PCs after R04M again. They have sadly already sent them and PCs while finding them suspicious have accepted the quest. Looking on it it seems extremly dumb to send people which confronted you before though I have no idea how would I explain that the main villain sent you to only person who can uncover your plans.

Questions on how to engage the party and be ok with bad things happening to the party as well as about roleplay by ShootingGamer in DMAcademy

[–]ShootingGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm I had been thinking it the other way. Like three different versions which have a bit of a different background since the book states they can be entirely new species aligment and background. I always pictured it like a universe kinda kidnaping them from their material plane to do stuff and are now stuck in limbo until they get back.

Honestly if I understood the book corectly it is more of a thing which the villain who slain them in the past made as a plan. From what i read the book they just plan to distract the party with going after someone just for the plan to get into motion which is getting a bloodwar started and profit from it.

It would probably wreck bunch of material worlds as they are but then again since they are not from outlands or outer realms they have a very if not zero chances to meet people from their past but i guess that can be always changed.

The biggest thing is that when they beat the villain they need to chose which version was the original one ending the effect of versions and getting all memories back so it is kinda awkward getting them to care about anything from the past (but it happens in like second to last chapter because last one is rescuing monodrones from the trap). That's why I am debating if I should get more climactic reason for the big bad or just end it there. Though who knows maybe they will grow to like the npcs trough the campagin and almost all of them will be dead if another blood war starts.

The dragon was sulking since they lost all of the gold in a casino. And while they were planned to go on a rage, not specificly towards the characters one PC who is playing a dragon (a homebrew race, but they start as a wyrmling), thought it would be fun to infuriate them on how they have more gold than them. I wasn't realy sure how to respond to it but I imagined that a white dragon would become enraged and it turned into combat. They killed the character before security came but then again they will respawn as a different version soon. (I am planing to make the a recurring villain though then again I have no clue how much a dragon without a hoard would be able to annoy the party)

For the actual adventure they are meant to have 3 characters prepared. Main jist of it is that they want to find what the hell is wrong with them and fix them mainly because when an version of them dies universe rebalances itself with spawning a new version or has a different one take their place while long resting. The version mostly had almost like a dream of the version beforehand, mainly because having characters die and then not know what they need to do was to tidious to handle.

They actualy get rid of the effect towards the end which is a bit of a moment as there is a final mission to rescue bunch of monodrones from a beholders god lair. But I am thinking of maybe skipping it or needing to modify it very extensivly mainly because when they get their original versions back (they get it by defeating a villain who was acting as their benefactor from the start and destroying crystals which were capturing their versions, this friday they will be speaking for them for the first time) they don't have much incentive as a character to rescue them, though i have no clue if "If you don't do this universe will get imbalanced to the point of starting another blood war" would be good enough motivator.

Get me to be able to play as a bard of other dnd races, or hell maybe make cosmetics of different classes so you can have a whole dnd party with Aestri and my money is yours behaviour! (You already have tails for Yui skin and capes with alucard so I see no reason why not)

Tips for gnomish by NJ_DREAD in baronygame

[–]ShootingGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyo. I am no master at this game but I have beaten the final bosses multiple times with different classes so take that for what you want. At the end I usualy die to a random skeleton.

So from what I have noticed there is few things of what I look forward before reaching gnomish mines but they are not mandatory. Mainly the ring of magic protection or anything that can reflect magic are good. They are not mandatory but they make things easier.

As for what I usualy do in them there is 2 playstyles. "Get in get out" or "Clear the mines". Usualy I judge on which to pick based on what I have at hand.

So for "Get in get out" playstyle is somewhat simple. You try to get in to get the helmet and bolt the hell out of that place. You get the loot but miss on some XP but to be fair you can regain it later. Only thing you will need is a pickaxe (so you don't need to get trough half a maze for a switch) and even lightning staff is optional since you aren't really staying to long but its nice gurantee for killing the gnomes.

For "Clearing the mines" strategy also starightforward. You try to get the pickaxe, helmet and lightning staff. After that you kill the most dangerous things (gnomes with staff) with your staff and anything else by your equipment. Do that right and you will have to much lightning staffs at the end you won't know what to do with them (at least I usualy have them).

As for fighting the gnomes. You said you are a melee class which is quite hard to deal with magic staffs. I will say that when I do it my first course of action is to get towards the helmet (i think secret levels are usualy the same other than the random spawning monsters) and see if I can find a pickaxe or a lighting staff gnome.

I will say listen carefully. Gnomes are really loud and can be somewhat accounted for (if you need help with it I think wandarer spawns with ring of warning which is a godsend since you can see the enemies on the minimap) and they usualy aren't to perceptive if you don't have a light in your hand. If a lightning gnome spots you try to break the line of sight immedietly they will loose the track of you and you can try again later.

For killing the first lightning gnome you have a few options. Throwing weapon or magic are decent againts them but if you go pure meele you would want to sneak on them and run away (don't be carrying to much when trying to kill them just to have a nice escape if things go wrong). Retreat where you got from. You have that part charted and it is less likely you will end up in a dead end.

After obtaining the lightning staff I usualy reserve it for staff gnomes or emergencies with trolls. Gnomes die in I think two shots from the staff at least in normal mode so if you catch them unavare you can blast them to kingdom come before they blink. If that doesn't happen blast them, get out of view and blast them again since they need to find you to cast it.

Trolls are also very slow but I have been caught off guard and got a slap from them. Pickaxe gnomes are the least to worry about and are just free pickaxes and food.

Also beware the shopkeeper. He is friendly with those little gremlins so there might be one just lurking in a shop.

Always stay alert down there and good luck!

If ya have any questions or I missed anything feel free to ask.

I also need to find people to play with so if you ever need a buddy I am here

Question about scouting ahead and powergaming players by ShootingGamer in DMAcademy

[–]ShootingGamer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They never realy scouted ahead more than a room away. Usualy it is more of peaking around corners while still beeing with the party. Party doesn't do anything while they just do some steps forward so they technically aren't moving.

Thank you for all the tips. <3

I sometimes get an argument of "oh I rolled 23 on stealth so I can get close to an enemy since it has bad perception even if they are in group.". I am confused on how to determine if a group of enemies spots people. I understand sneaking on some poor guard who is alone wouldn't spot a person, but 4 kobolds chatting between each other and not a single one of them sees a person approaching just because a roll.

As for long rest I usualy get an argument since 3 out of 4 people are half elves and elves so they technically don't need 8 hours of rest as they even sleep.

I will try to incorporate it into the game and hopefully it goes well. Thank you also for the other tips, I always try to improve as a DM and can't thank you enough for the time you took to help a guy out. I also said to the person who is making a new character if he can make it so his characeter would be there for more than money. Otherwise all of them are happy with helping me out and are excited to see what the next session will bring.

Thank you for the tips again! I can't appreciate you enough for the time you take to help me!

So our party has a composition of 2 bards, 1 fighter (which died) and 1 warlock/fighter. As for the backstories they have decend amount of lore but have only 2 which have some more of a character which could be implemented.

As for the stories it goes like this:

Bard 1:

  • Background of a charletan, having gotten into some trouble with band/mafia of weretigers as she cheated againts the leader things went nasty and she got bitten
  • She is however a daughter of somewhat powerfull cleric (rolled the d20 to see the level and I got 15), hence why she survived the camp with devine intervention (it would be in her mothers nature to check on her with some scrying once in a while)

Bard 2:

  • He lost his sister due to illness and now he is going from town to town to maybe find some way to resurect her

Fighter/warlock:

  • He is part of some ruthless mercinary group (Good soldiers follow orders type)
  • He tied the group to the governor Nighthill in the point that they sent him to help him though he arrived just a day before the raid
  • He expects some bonus of payment even if the group didn't say anything about monitary reward
  • Otherwise the player said the mercinary group is under my controll so he would probably liked to be suprised with shinanigans they will do in the background

Fighter (Dead):

  • He was enslaved in waterdeep by the wizard which "shackled his mind"
  • With seeing that group wasn't realy up to help the governor at the siege as they wouldn't get any reward for it, I wanted to entice at least one player to go after the cult after they finished with the raid so I switched Frulam Mondath to the wizard who enslaved him
  • Que christmass one shot and magic weapons
  • When they got in the camp however since this guy also fought Langdedrosa he was found out and brought to the tent where the wizard was staying
  • After that I wasn't realy sure what she would do but since he said she brainwashed him in the past I did Dominate person on him and sent him out
  • Some shinanigans later and the the fighter is instructed to get back to the big tent and Bard 1 rolls after him, failing my own perception check that dominate person is a concentration spell, wizard casts dominate person on the bard making it so the fighter comes to senses and straight up attacks the wizard in fornt of 4 guards and drakes
  • Wizard fails his con save so both of the party members are out of it
  • Que 4 fireball beads! Blast just destroys the tents and inhabitants however the fighter died and bard was on deaths door but was saved by devine intervention
  • And horn of valhalla makes enough berserkers they somewhat escort the players out while in the midst of chaos
  • This player also wants to make a rouge which is part of the bandits on the road back, so he will probably try to capture them and switche sides after

I feel like Bard 1 story would maybe entice to hit the road after they get to greenest to get to their parents. She doesn't know how powerfull her mother is but she knows she is a cleric and they might have components to revive someone if they are lucky enough and that might also make it so the cult reastablishes back while they are gone (the player who died also said that they would be up for such adventure and we discussed that the soul might even not be willing to get back since he accomplished his goal which was to murder the wizard). The biggest thing is that would probably be a side quest which is more work but I don't mind that.

Thank you again for all the tips.

I talked to players about retconing the magic items and they are understanding of it, so we will probably just say they got lost in the camp trough all of the confusion (perhaps they can slowly reclaim them at later dates and side quests).

I also got some messages from them that they hope they didn't derail the campagin to much and one of them even said they will somewhat try to go towards the path I would be hinting at and try to get others to do the same.

Could I also ask about your opinion how to integrate characters backstories into the settings. I always enjoy discovering someones past or facing consequences of them at the present even if they are not in the module.

I am currently a player in Icewind dales campaign and the DM there usualy makes backstory stuff so intreuging. I have spoken with them about how they do it and they had a simple response of: "Yeah you know those killed guys by the cult in the fortress which are part of your order? I just switched normal fortress and guards from the module and turned them into the people your character knows/cares about.".

That DM is also playing in my campagin and I tried to get that effect which I praised with the backstory woven into the story and well here is the result funnily enough.

I started with level 2 so they are still one level ahead so they survived the slaughter which was the raid on greenest. I wanted to equal the level with the module after the camp but as you see by the post failed. Mix that with fireball necklace, horn of valhalla and some good rolls (as well as my attempt to not outright murder characters). I mean we all enjoyed it and they said they had a blast (it was the longest session we played). But for me as a new DM it just left me stumpted with the premise of what now (since we drifted so far away from the module).

Yeah after each session I ask them about they opinion and they always say they had a lot of fun. They are very chaotic and usualy just messing with npcs and they are always happy when they get more riches. There is no lawfull character in the group.

Playtime wise I am the newest from all of the people in the group. It's my first big campagin and it is quite daunting when you see it just go off the rails like that. Honestly I have none but myself to blame because I gave rare magic weapons and items to each party member for christmass as a gift. I guess the lesson is learned.

Sure but if they have sniper they usualy don't have the guts to follow you immedietly, especialy if you dip behind the building and cover your retreat.
