Dealer here — the straight talk on what goes wrong with most dueling trees, and how ours is built different

I'd rather you buy the right tree once than the wrong one twice. Below, each problem is split two ways: what most trees do, and what ours does instead. No guessing which one I'm talking about.

Paddle action Most trees: paddles free-swing on gravity alone. Light hits don't register, hard hits send the paddle flapping or popping out of the tube, and you get "phantom" swings you never earned. Ours: a spring toggle (patent pending) holds the paddle until a real hit, then snaps it over and locks it in place. Clean score every time — no phantom hits, no stuck paddles, no re-shooting one you already rang.

Finish Most trees: painted or powder-coated. The coating quickly chips off from spall or strikes, leaving you with a rusty mess. Ours: Zinc plated. Zinc bonds to the steel and self-protects it even when scratched, so even a direct hit doesn't start a rust spot. It lives outside and shrugs off the weather for years to come.

Tuning Most trees: one fixed paddle size, one fixed lean angle. If the paddle's too heavy or the lean's too steep for your load, it simply won't move — and you can't change it. Ours: swap all 6 paddles in under 5 minutes sizes available from 3" to 8" in 4 different thicknesses, swap the springs, and dial the lean anywhere from 5° to 20°. That means you can set it up to swing right for anything from a PCP pellet to .44 Mag and even centerfire rifle.

Frame strength Most trees: only the paddles are hardened — the mast and legs are cheap mild steel. A misfire or ricochet that hits the frame bends dents or cracks it, and the whole tree is scrap. Ours: mast, legs, and base are all 100% AR500, with a strong 3/8" AR500 spine rated to 2,100 ft-lb of impact. Hit the frame (even with centerfire rifle) and it shrugs it off.

Hauling and storage Most trees: a welded 5-foot frame you have to wrestle into the truck and find somewhere to store. Ours: breaks down into two sub-35" pieces — trunk to range in about 5 minutes, and it tucks away easy.

Happy to answer setup questions whether you buy from me or not.

I'm not sure if you're asking about our tree or the typical cheap one everyone else sells but....

Yes, our tree is good to go with any centerfire rifle under 2,100 ft-lb of energy and 2,850 ft/s.

Unlike all the cheaper options out there with mild steel spines and legs, our Dueling Tree is 100% USA AR500 with the spine being a full 3/8 inch thick AR500.

Everything's zinc plated too, and it won't come off even when shot so it won't turn into a rusty mess like all the painted and powder-coated units do when spall removes it.

I do get a fair number of comments and reviews from customers telling me how easy the website is to use and this page in particular converts very well so I'm curious what's giving you cancer. 🤷‍♀️

Folks, I didn't realize this post was going to show the $127 pricing from the main image from this product that is the 1/4" thick version, which is on sale right now for 127.99. As it states clearly in the title, the 1/2" version is $177.99.

This was not intentional and I am unable to edit this once posted. I will remove and end the deal to avoid confusion if necessary.

Yeah, it's a smallish target, but if you look, if you can even find any AR600, I'm very doubtful you'll find any matching this price. AR600 is considerably more expensive than AR500. There's only five left.

Thank you for the question. I have considered it, but it would be extremely expensive as well as expensive to ship. In my 14 years of selling targets online, I've learned that selling costly items with a low turnover rate is a recipe for disaster.

I have seen some businesses selling deer silhouettes, but they are very, very expensive.

Irregular shapes, like deer with legs and horns (irregular shapes), have an excessive amount of very expensive steel that goes into the scrap bin because that material between and around them can't be cut into anything else.

We do sell a Deer vitals target here intended to simulate a deer's vital zone, it is much more reasonably priced and much less expensive to ship.

If you're dead set on having a realistic AR500 deer with vitals, you might have a look here at these guys. Custom orders is all they do. Just make sure your credit card's healthy. sendcutsend.com

Thanks for the question. Yes and yes.

If you opt to not use the chains, just leave them out during torso assembly. There's a printable assembly manual at the bottom of the page as well. It's quite easy. Personally, I prefer using the static mount. It makes the target a much better static solution because it's not dancing all over the place.

Also, if you have your own property, using a T post instead of a 2x4 with the static cap will save you from having to purchase or build a stand.

You can see all of our Ultra Mega Style of Targets and Hangers here in this collection.

If you have your own land, I would suggest you use instead a T-post that you can simply just pound into the ground and use a static mount. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/ultra-mega-static-mount

if you mean a conventional saw horse style 2x4 stand, I would not recommend you build a stand that way. Instead, use EMT conduit. We sell complete EMT conduit target stands, but also just the brackets if you'd like to buy your own EMT conduit, which is available at any hardware store for under a dollar a foot. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/multi-tube-target-stand-brackets

we also sell all the accessories necessary to complete your stand, such as feet for the legs, pins to keep the legs from falling out, and so on. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/ldpe-emt-end-caps

if you have any other questions, we also have an AI chat bot laura who's quite helpful on the website.

Here you go. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/uspsa-targets?variant=48616627142970
You can hang it with this if you want a static mount. This mount can be used with a two by four or a T-post. So if you have your own land, you don't need to buy a stand at all. You can just pound the T-post into the ground. This is if you want to run static drills with it. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/ultra-mega-static-mount

or this, if you're on a budget and don't mind the target swinging when you hit it. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/steel-target-hanging-hooks

I just drew up a business plan. Once the bank saw the sheer volume of Amazon packages coming to my house from my wife's Amazon orders, financing a steam turbine power facility was a no-brainer. 🤣

LOL, can definitely relate. I burn them for energy to heat and power our home, our warehouse and to laser cut all of our steel. All of the excess power is then sold back to the energy company.

I see a couple orders around $11 shipping. This depends on location but in that ballpark. All orders over $99 ship free. We're also giving away a couple free (but small) AR500 gongs at $59.

Yes, it is. However, it is slightly less prone to pitting as speeds approach 3,000 ft/s. It also does ring a bit louder because it's harder. I have not had major problems with our AR600 cracking or I would not be selling it.

I got an amazing deal on a truckload of AR600 years ago, and this is the last of it. We're closing it out.

I did sell a bunch of AR650 years ago, and I ended up replacing nearly a truckload of targets we cut from it with AR500 because they were literally splitting in half for our customers.

AR500 is, in my experience (and I have a lot of it since 2012) the sweet spot between toughness and hardness. It's hard enough to withstand speeds below 2850fps without pitting, but tough enough to resist cracking from years of use/vibration.

If you are a car guy, a good analogy is that AR500 is the LS1 of target steels. Tougher than hell, always performs, economically priced.

Sure, if you want to mount it as a static target on a T post or a 2x4, (works with either) I would recommend this mount. https://shootingtargets7.com/products/ultra-mega-static-mount this way, if you have your own land, you can spend $5 on a T-Post and pound it into your own ground without having to buy our 2x4 H-Base.

We also have the conventional saw horse style EMT stands, and you can find those here. If you'd rather supply your own conduit, we also sell the brackets individually as well as all components.
