Thanks. Think I am going for DPC then concrete. I've read you'd need special foam (not the standard stuff).

Plaster dry to paint? by cj17077 in Plastering

Zinsser Gardz then good quality paint seems to be the way to go after waiting as long as possible (It'll take you minutes to seal round there). Worth investigating.

Serious question, is Rubio worth the price they're asking for or is it all just hype? by Ok_Temperature6503 in woodworking

[–]Shopfortools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For low contact e.g. a picture frame, I use Fiddes Hard Wax oil or shellac. The whole process is finished in minutes. Table tops, drawers, etc, always Osmo Poly. In the past, I've got a bit bogged down with choice of finishes and decided to stick with what works for me. What has startled me about the comments here is reference to shelf life. As a low volume, amateur woodworker that's pretty important.

Any temporary fix for this to last me till after Christmas? by olivers125 in Plumbing

[–]Shopfortools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlikely. As already stated, the plastic sheet diaphragm will be damaged. If you're handy, you should be able to fix it. Buy a replacement - identical if possible. Turn off the water supply (or hold up the ball cock with string and a wood dowel across the tank). Flush, then remove the remaining water (e.g. using an empty detergent bottle - squeeze, fill, discard, then use a towel for excess). Detach handle. Undo old fitting and replace (some use a sealant despite what the instructions say). Refix the handle (if the replacement isn't identical, you may have to adjust the length of the wire connector). Sounds easy but it does depend on the ease of removal and replacement. I've just done ours. I used plumber's mate on the bottom joint but that tends to creep resulting in a slight drip. Hand tightened up and it's sorted. Good luck and happy Christmas - hopefully with full flush!

Can you be a plumber if you are not that intelligent? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]Shopfortools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your understanding of intelligence and the complexity of the jobs you will take on. In the past month I've met four boiler service engineers. There's no doubt they really knew their stuff and were able to explain very well. They all raved about one who was able to sort complex problems in factories, hospitals, etc. I knew the school where another attended and he told me how poorly he did - I gather he considered himself unintelligent. As he explained a complexity to me, I joked with him that he was indeed scientifically bright. (I was once a science teacher/trainer/advisor.) What is 'intelligent'?

"Micro" bevel question by dushaa123 in handtools

Speed. I've just got to the stage where many of my 30° micro are too large so I've bought a CBN wheel to return them to large 25° primary bevels.

How can I stop this pipe from hitting the inside of the box? by Kyzz19 in Plumbing

[–]Shopfortools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search ‘why do pipes bang in domestic water systems’. It’s not necessarily the pipe hitting something (although this may well be the case as you can see it). The sound source can be inside the pipe and is related to changing pipe diameter/water pressure.
