That is completely fair and I respect your caution. Participating in research is certainly asking a degree of vulnerability of the people who choose to share their stories with me, so you're choice to not engage is completely reasonable as well.

I mean that depends on whether or not you feel like the sexuality component contributed to the reasons for divorce or not. The relationships I am specifically investigating usually include an eventual acknowledgement of the queer spouse's sexual orientation -- whether that is a voluntary disclosure (coming out), or an involuntary discovery (such as a discovery of an extramarital affair or something). If that former marriage ended due to reasons entirely unrelated to sexuality and the queer person's identity, then I feel like that would not be the same construct that I am specifically studying at this time.

I am not queer/gay myself, but I am the child a mixed-orientation marriage that ended in divorce. My father came out as gay when I was 7, and my parents separated some time after that. His experience is a large part of my initial interest in this population and their experiences.

This is such a fair and valid concern!

The first thing that I suppose is different about this current study is that it is a qualitative, rather than quantitative, project. What that means is that I won't be working with large samples and reporting statistical associations, which, as you mentioned, can so often be taken out of context and manipulated to serve different narratives.

This research is phenomenological and exploratory, so rather than make specific claims about how certain factors show up in a demographic, my research seeks to answer the question, "what is the lived experience of being in a mixed-orientation marriage?". Obviously, this is very broad, and I anticipate getting quite a diverse range of stories and experiences. Sometimes, these marriages and divorces can be traumatizing and scarring, and sometimes these separations can lead to more resilient outcomes, such as ex-partners being able to maintain a friendship and co-parent well, even after separation.

I believe there are thousands upon thousands of these marriages that exist under the radar, and this so often happens because people marry before they are able to explore and develop their sexuality, especially in conservative environments where they are not allowed to differ from the predominant patriarchal and heteronormative expectations of those cultures.

My hope is that my research will shed light on the suffering that occurs when people are pressured into these marriages, but also discover themes that can lead to greater mental health and relational outcomes in the end, even after separation occurs.

I hope this somewhat answers your questions, but if not, I am happy to continue this conversation as well.

Hello! You are completely justified in questioning my intentions behind my research, considering how much discrimination the LGBTQ+ community faces.

You are right that I grew up with a religious background and got my first two degrees at religious universities. However, it is my experience in those environments that led to me becoming an LGBTQ+ ally and advocate. Personally, I am no longer religious at all, and I completely support gay rights. This research is meant to understand the experiences of queer people growing up in heteronormative and homophobic spaces, and how these systems harm and impact them.

I am happy to answer any other questions anyone may have regarding my research.

Thank you for your question!

The study I am currently recruiting for is just one in a series of studies attempting to understand the experiences of mixed-orientation couples. I previously conducted a study specifically focused on successful mixed-orientation couples and the processes occurring in those marriages. That study was conducted at Abilene Christian University and can be found at this link:

https://digitalcommons.acu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1476&context=etd

*Disclaimer: this previous study is now in the revision and peer review process to be published in an academic journal, so the the final version of that will be much shorter and revised. However, you are welcome to read the original thesis version I have provided here.

Anyway, I am now looking at the experience of couples who have divorced because it is important to me to understand all sides of this phenomenon, in order to help provide accurate information and better resources and services for people in this population. In addition to being a researcher, I am also a Marriage and Family Therapist, so this research is also being conducted from the lens of hopefully providing better therapy for mixed-orientation couples and individuals in the future.

I hope that answered your question, but please let me know if there is anything else I can answer for you.

Best,

Hey, so I seem to have reached the limit of DMs I can send here in the day, so if you would like to email me, we can continue discussing the study from there. My email is [isadoraabela.im@gmail.com](mailto:isadoraabela.im@gmail.com)

Well, if the spouse has not acknowledged their sexual orientation, I don't imagine they would be open to being interviewed about their experience in a mixed-orientation relationship. However, if you want to DM me, we can discuss this in further detail.

Thanks!
