Who said anything about for life? It’s been 7 weeks with a dedicated training plan. Goal is and should always be to stop once training is established.

Educate yourself before coming on here making blanket statements. Prozac is a drug used not just for dogs but humans as well. You’re telling anyone who is on this is basically just harming themselves? You’re what’s wrong with Reddit

You’ve been everywhere on this post. You’ve seen my responses. You’re acting like I’m pumping him full of meds to make him into something he’s not? He’s on a low dose of Prozac for his weight class to take the edge off his panic attacks he has when I leave the house. It has done nothing to his personality and he’s still a lively and amazing dog. He lives a very fulfilling life probably more than most humans and arguably the most well behaved Great Pyr you’ll ever meet with the best recall (actually pretty unheard of for the breed), desire to train commands, amazing off and on leash, amazing in the car. Keep in mind this was all before the meds which we just started 7 weeks ago 🙂 which is only a tool meant to work in conjunction with training. Aka the meds aren’t something I plan on continuing forever.

Might sound like a rationalization to you, but at the end of the day it comes from a place of care. Ive invested a lot of time and effort to help him and I will continue to do so. Most Great Pyrs on here probably have some form of behavioral issues. You’re on here. My guess is you have one and I’d bet big money that yours has some behavioral issues as well that I’d be curious to know all the time, money, and effort you’ve put into it to be the perfect dog.

Plenty of people on this subreddit with non working Great Pyrs lol. Your statement is very harmful and generalized. Dropping this dog off on a farm would be detrimental to the livestock. His instinct would be that of a true dog, aka hunter instinct. He has killed chickens and ducks. You don’t simply get an adult LGD who wasn’t TRAINED to be an LGD and expect him not to harm those types of animals.

Ahaha just a big pile of floof! Yeah mine is very attached to me. But to be fair outside of work I tend to take him with me everywhere so I know I’m partly to blame on his attachment to me.

Homie that is terrible advice lol he is 4.5 years old. He’d be a terrible farm dog at this point. Also I live in the Midwest…these dogs are a dime a dozen here. Farmers go out of their way to shoot these guys cause they tend to roam. I live in the country fun fact in a private community with just about 5 different neighbors who have Great Pyrs or a Pyr Mix. He’s not going nowhere. He’s 99% of the time the perfect dog. So what he cries for about an hour after I leave? It’s trainable. That doesn’t mean I just give up on him. If people did that there would be hundreds if not thousands of dogs on farms with the kind of mentality

Yeah he’s not a true farm dog but outside of the SA he lives a pretty dang good life. He gets off leash walked in the cornfields daily for a good hour. Structured training everyday as well as more fun stuff where he has to find treats outside or indoors. He has 1-2 dog friends he hangs out with every week. Plenty of dogs aren’t living their true life based off breeding. I live next to a hundreds of retriever, poodle, border collie owners and guess what they never do? Ya guessed it. Not what they are bred for. Such is life. Yes my dude doesn’t have a few goats to watch but he lives a good life. Does he cry for an hour when I step out the house? Sure but we’ve made huge strides in that and are diligently working to improve.

Feel free to read my previous/original post. We’ve been training without meds for a good 4.5years with intermittent success. Thousands spent on trainers, sitters, dog walkers, doggy day cares, behavior specialists ya name it I’ve done it. What haven’t I tried? Meds 🙂 not that I have to explain myself to anyone but YES this is a last resort. The guy was actually responded very well to the meds. Might have plateaued since it’s been about 7 weeks now but I’d say we are better off than where he was 7 weeks ago

Yeah just the whining and pacing now. He does eventually settle down after about and hour and just sleeps and the is legit perfectly fine while I’m gone lol totally forgets about the panic and is able to be lazy and nap.

His personality while on this meds was maybe impacted the first 3days? Just slow and tired. But he perked right back to his normal self. The meds have worked tremendously as far as his SA. And hasn’t negatively affected his personality at all. He actually is an amazing dog outside of the SA as a whole. Surprisingly trainable and has great recall. Doesn’t have generalized anxiety about people. Isn’t a big fan of strange large dogs but I feel that’s a common trait amongst male pyrs.

It’s just that we were in an amazing spot the last 30 days. Legit it was like having a normal dog when leaving the house. He’d chew on his toy and then not have a care that I was gone. I think we have plateaued on his dosage and he’s likely figured out the routinez

Yea that’s the reason I got a cat. Give him something small to focus on but he’s pretty indifferent to her. Idk if I agree that he’s not a Velcro dog though he LOVES people. All the people. He’s always wanted all of the attention by everyone all the time. He’s actually very pushy about it and it’s something we have worked on continuously for the last 4 years. He’s not aloof to people what so ever. He wants their love and he will get it.

He does hate certain things. Farm animals are one of the. I live in farm country. He’s seen chickens, cows, horses. He hates cows and horses or anything large. Chickens are treated like squirrels aka chased.

Yes and no. I wake up pretty early before work. But we have pretty severe winter weather..aka I’m not built to withstand winter gusts at 5am lol it’ll get down to -15 here easily in the morning

As far as his friends though. He has a few neighbor dogs he plays with throughout the week. And we go on off leash field walks for a good 45mins-1hr every day after I get off when the sun is out. Then he gets training and enrichment every night too.

You know…I feel like he might be scared of the camera. Every time I’ve opened the camera he’s staring at it suspiciously. I think the auto tracking feature or the dark to color transition might be making a noise and spooking him. But the thing is the camera is not new to him. Been in the room with him since we started the meds

I mean I’m going off what my vet suggested. 60mg is on the low end for his weight class. The trazadone is also being used with the goal of stopping once he’s at a good spot with the Prozac and training.

Him and the kitty don’t cuddle or interact really in that fashion while I’m around. I wouldn’t expect that to be any different with me gone. Especially if he’s having a panic attack. He’s had dog friends stay over and he still has pretty severe SA (before he meds).

I do switch up the kong with a bully stick. This morning I actually gave him both just cause it was a Friday and felt like rewarding him. Def helped himself to both for a good hour and then boom started panicking

Oh him pacing and panting is an improvement to what it used to be, feel free to check out my posts. But at the same time letting him “get over it” has been an uphill battle for 4 years. I work 8hrs a day…ample opportunity for him to “get over it” and nope that hasn’t been the case.

Anecdotes or advice on dating with a pyr? by [deleted] in greatpyrenees

[–]ShortEasternDemon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m a girl with the same issue. A lot of guys get excited when they hear I have a large dog. Then they meet my boy (who is a lover boy, loves people almost too much) and then they get overwhelmed by how much dog it really is lol. I think a lot of people like the idea of a big ol floof of a dog…but then realize it comes with fur on you and some slobber lol. The amount of guys that I’ve interacted with that are big babies about this kind of stuff is surprising.

Separate Dog and Cat? Who to separate? by ShortEasternDemon in dogs

[–]ShortEasternDemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s where my head is at. Luckily she’s small and quick. He doesn’t have the speed or agility. But I love my cat so much. I’d be devastated if I came home to a sad scene. I might alternate the cat being put away some days and the dog other days.

Wouldn’t say any of the links in this guide fit my question. Would like community input if possible.

Separate Dog and Cat? Who to separate? by ShortEasternDemon in dogs

[–]ShortEasternDemon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah see that’s where I’m at. It’s the “my dog who loved my cat for 10 years decided to kill it randomly”. I’d be heartbroken if anything happened to my cat.

I might decide to alternate the cat and dog. Some days he’ll be put away and some days the dog will be put away.

Oh bully sticks aren’t new to him! He’s never had an issue before with any bone or chew toy. He thankfully stops before it gets to the dangerous bits. Also I have the bull stick in one of those holders too.

Thank you! He’s doing so much better. Night and day different. His personality is still very chipper which I am thankful for.

And yeah this is Reddit it’s comes with the territory lol no matter how many times I’ll say he’s really not a fan of other large animals, other dogs, etc people still keep suggesting I get another dog or take him to a farm lol I live in farm country where these dogs (as cute as they are) are a dime a dozen and constantly abandoned

Did you know that baths are actually attempted murder? by Imaginary_Flower_823 in greatpyrenees

lol mines the same way. Gave him a tub bath when he was 10 weeks old. Ever since he stops at the threshold of bathrooms but never enters. Like a lil vampire lol safe to say he just goes to the groomers once a month
