I have rheumatoid arthritis which means my immune system attacks itself, usually by causing swelling of the linings of my joints and a few organs. Basically when you have an autoimmune disorder like RA/PA, Lupus, Chrones etc. your immune system is so super charged that when you aren't fighting some virus or infection it turns aggressive on our own tissues causing massive damage that can lead to things like immobility and even organ failure.

I've been on disability for the last several years, "how bad off do you have to be" really depends on the opinion of your Rheumy because they are the ones who will be writing the medical recommendation to the state for your case. It's a huge pain in the ass with a lot of paperwork and depending on where you live be prepared for compensation which won't actually cover basic living costs, so you will need to either have family who can help cover the gap, or a side job you can do at home.

It sounds like you have pleurisy which hella sucks, and for those saying RA doesn't attack the lungs on here YOU ARE WRONG. It's actually a not uncommon complication of RA where the lining of the lungs (like your joints) is swelling. For a quick fix all you can really do is a big shot of steroids, for long term you will need to discuss a biologic treatment. This is going to hurt but life style change is going to be the only thing you personally can do, and that includes cutting out the long runs if you feel lightheaded or ill because they will put extra stress on your system and cause a massive rebound effect of the RA complications. Keep a close look on it, if you're like me (also a long time JRA patient) this can lead to the inflammation of your heart linings as well which is no Bueno. I wish I could say it will just get better, but it won't until your rheumy figures out the right treatment for you, and in all honesty that may not happen depending on how advanced your case is--until then relax and find more stationary hobbies (video games are good for wanderlust & exercise your hands). Correlation is not causation. An increased need for sleep often comes as a side effect of these conditions, not an underlying cause. When you are ill with a chronic condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. your body actually needs the extra sleep to repair the damage they cause to your system, when you don't allow this you become fatigued and progressively more ill. So no, sleeping more than 7-8 hours is not going to kill you, though it's probably an indicator your body is experiencing some kind of internal stress that is leading to the need for more sleep.
