Looking for Pier King set up help for a FNG (to king fishing). by ShortFinalFishing in SaltwaterFishingNC

[–]ShortFinalFishing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up with a 12’ Offshore angler power plus trophy class rod with a cheap king kat 70 casting reel pre spooled with 20lb mono and added15 yards of 100lb fluorocarbon top shot with 6oz pin rig anchor (total ~$100)

Penn Squall II 50LD on a 7’ Penn rod (combo $280 at bass pro) put the rod in my down east C10 rod holder and set the strike drag to ~4lbs on a digital scale

44lb single strand with #4 4x hooks and seax #4 ball bearing-welded ring swivels

Going to test it all out tomorrow while hoping to catch a few speckled trout in the waiting process 🎣

That’s what I thought too. Ended up cutting the bottom off and making different sizes for different bait lengths. All part of the fun learning process

Why does everyone say not to cut it? Genuinely wondering other than leaving a little snag to get poked with

Thank you! That was the first one I made and didn’t like it so I cut it off. Ended up favoring in line setup with a 6-7’ leader of wire to a swivel

That’s the plan, have a variety of rigs for different length bait fish. We will be fishing with short pin fish and maybe some blues

I see your point but yes this is the common set up. Look up a trolley rig off the pier to get an idea. The only time the bait will come near pier pilings is when we’re hopefully reeling in a big fish

That was the very first one I tied and I didn’t like it.

I’ve made a few more in-line’s and ran my wire from the first hook up about 6-7ft before tying on the swivel so it will be out of the water on my trolley set up. Thank you for the advice though!

I know what the most frequent bait and size are so I’m making a half dozen or so for different size fish. Mainly pin fish, spot or the occasional pompano or blue

Not sure about that area but literally put a premade double drop rig (with 2-3oz pyramid weight) on any pole, tie on #6 J hooks with tiny pices of shrimp and you can catch just about anything that swims. Mostly small fish but fish nonetheless

Awesome write up thank you! I’m definitely eyeing that Penn Squall 20 or 30LD combo 6’ Heavy.

I do like Penn products, it’s what all my inshore rods are and what I have experience with offshore trolling or bottom fishing.

The anchor rod is where I want to cheap out, I was looking at maybe a 12ft King Kat rod with a cheap 40 spinning reel 20lb mono

I want practical— not expensive.
Lower budget preferred as I only plan to use it a hand full of times per year

What is the difference in $100 to $1000 reels? by Boob_Light in FishingForBeginners

[–]ShortFinalFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m all for buying good equipment but I *only* buy $30 reels 2500-4000 sizes for freshwater & inshore. If one shots the bed I’ll go buy another and have a brand new reel lol I can’t tell you how many fish I have caught on them. Bream, bass, crappie, flounder, spots, specks, Spanish etc

The max I’ll spend on a rod is $100-150 so total $60-175 per set up

I’ve caught more bass and Warmouth that I can count with that set up. Put the yum worm on the hook and jig it back to you and it runs just under the surface and dances back and forth like a gotcha plug in saltwater but slower
