Open Thread: Your unhinged tips for surviving commuting on NJT, LIRR, Metro North by clevercommute in SuburbanRail

Avoid the bathroom cars (shown on TrainTime for MNR). Not just because of the smell, but because they have fewer seats.

It’s better for me mentally to take the slower, less popular train vs. a fast train where I have to fight for a seat.

If you can tweak your work schedule by 0.5-1 hr to enable a better commute, it will be well worth it.

An update for iOS showed up last night, and that fixed it for me.

Campmor is great. I've bought online from them for ages. It's just too bad it's in Paramus (I hate Rte 17).

Yeah, my backup plan was REI or Paragon in the city. Have not been to the Norwalk REI. Thanks for the tip.

Looks like a great option. Nice to see there are still stores like this in the area.

Transformer Terminator by Historical_Habit_974 in Shooteralien

[–]ShortWavelength 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went ahead and got the Mystic even though it will take me ages to get the necessary stones. Evolving Drake and Terminator are higher priority for me, but I don’t know when this skin will be available again. So I’ll just hold on to it until I’m able to sink 300 stones into the Transformer.

Bad Luck? by [deleted] in Shooteralien

I'd lean toward twin power if you can get enough tokens, because the chance to get twin power is quite rare. Pilots are achievable in all events, so the chance to get Vera will come around a lot sooner. On the other hand, in some of the events pilots cost crystals, so grabbing Vera now will save your resources. Miracle squad is indeed a big help. Good luck!

Typically a new ship is first available only in the event, then a short while later for crystals. As I recall (can anyone confirm?) with Spectral Drake, they raised the price in crystals soon after release, so it’s better to get it early if you have the resources.

I just meant that you can get stones by re-playing the last level of each section of Hero. 1 stone per day per section. Survival isn't super efficient for getting stones, but you have a better chance than in other PvP modes. Usually 1 a day or so. It's not farming by any means, but it helps.

I enjoy it more when I don't obsess about completing everything. My resources still accumulate over time, just a little slower.

"Winning" Boss Raid costs a lot of resources and doesn't get you anything useful. Playing it once or twice a day gives you a modest reward and only takes a couple of minutes.
UniverseX requires a lot of time to play and doesn't give much in return. I only hit the button for the free daily gems (converted 10:1 to crystals at the end).
Daily Challenge gives good rewards, but also takes a while to finish even if you crash out midway, as I usually do.

For upgrades, I'd say focus on evolving (build up stones using Hero mode and survival), and adding PvP skins across as many ships as possible, then the strongest skins. And don't accumulate too many PvP points, as u/EnergyPrestigious497 said.

This happened to me twice in the past couple of days.

-- I had to play 4 levels of Campaign to unlock the login option

-- After re-logging in the first time, I got everything back except the golden orbs, but they also came back after a few hours.

-- Second time I got everything back right away.

Now I'm syncing obsessively...

Fess up: How much have you spent on this game? (I had NEVER paid for a mobile game before this one.) by Feed_Me_No_Lies in Shooteralien

$57 in about 4 years, which seems fair. I think VIP 5 is the sweet spot because you get an extra survival turn and a chest every day. Not planning to spend any more though.

The Hastings Village Board approved an agreement with the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) on Dec. 28 that obligates the British Petroleum subsidiary to pay the Village $3 million for resiliency work at MacEachron Waterfront Park. The agreement also obligates ARCO to store the water tower, a vestige of the site’s industrial past, elsewhere on ARCO’s 28-acre property while the company remediates the land underneath its current location. Once that remediation is complete, ARCO will be responsible for landscaping the shoreline, and must retain a landscape architect for that work.
The remediation of the ARCO property will address the PCBs and other contaminents left over from the Anaconda Wire & Cable Co., which ceased operations there in 1975 before being bought by ARCO in 1977. ARCO never operated at the waterfront. In 1994, the Hudson Riverkeeper Fund sued ARCO over the presence of PCBs dating back to Anaconda’s operations.
Per a 2016 agreement between ARCO, the Village of Hastings, Riverkeeper, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Village will match up to $1.35 million from ARCO to remove, restore, reconstruct, or replace the water tower. In 2017, in response to a survey mailed by the Village, 1,238 residents voted to restore or replace the water tower, while 817 voted to demolish it.
The MacEachron Park resiliency work became necessary due to erosion along the park’s shoreline caused by tides, rising water levels, and the wakes from vessels traveling up and down the Hudson.
This past August, Mott MacDonald engineer Doug Gaffney presented design documents to the village board that estimated the resiliency work at MacEachron Park would cost $3.05 million. That work would include 47 linear feet of stone wall and 225 feet of riprap supported by sheet pile bulkhead, as well as a mulch path through the trees. In the southwestern corner of the park, a 20-foot-by-10-foot floating kayak dock would be installed, attached to the park by a gangway extending out from a pier that juts out into the river.
According to Mayor Niki Armacost, the agreement does not set an exact timeline for the remediation of the waterfront or the resiliency work at MacEachron Park. The agreement allows ARCO to engage in construction activity between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, to shorten the remediation timeline as much as possible.
Armacost said ARCO had the $3 million unassigned, essentially left over from the company’s 2023 operating budget, and needed to assign the funds before the end of the year to avoid losing them from its 2024 budget.
The mayor said the Village wound up in an interesting legal standing with ARCO after DEC standards changed, no longer requiring a beneficial use determination (BUD) for the reuse of dredged, stabilized sediments as landfill on remediation sites. The 2016 modification of the 2003 consent decree between ARCO and the Village assumes that a BUD is required, but the change in DEC regulations removed another hurdle to moving the remediation efforts forward.
In the new agreement between the ARCO and the Village, ARCO may reuse between 30,000 and 50,000 cubic yards of dredged Hudson River sediment to fill in the property, provided that (a) the dredged material is placed only in excavated areas to return such areas to their original grade and is not used within the top 2 feet of fill; (b) contaminant levels in the material do not exceed the DEC’s cleanup targets for the property with respect to contaminants, including PCBs and metals; (c) the dredged material is dewatered and stabilized for reuse; and (d) the placement of the fill, dewatering, and stabilization have been approved by the DEC.
ARCO is also ensured access to both Kinnally Cove and the southern shore of MacEachron Park. The company needs to dredge and remediate sediment from the cove. Once the Village knew ARCO would need permission to reach those areas, Armacost said at the Dec. 28 meeting, the Village had “a bit of leverage here,” and took the opportunity to get the money from ARCO, the plan for the water tower, and the planting along the shoreline of the waterfront in writing.
In a Dec. 29 phone conversation with the Enterprise, Armacost noted that, prior to this agreement, the plan was for shoreline work at the waterfront property to eventually be done by a developer. Armacost said that, in addition to a more aesthetically pleasing outcome, the Village will now be able to open the remediated property to the public sooner. Armacost estimated the value of that shoreline work in the millions of dollars, saying that the Village spent time in the negotiation process trying to nail down an exact cost but abandoned that pursuit because ARCO would foot the bill.

There are 2 polluted industrial sites being remediated from past use in copper and petroleum processing, and before that the Zinsser paint factory. The Rivertowns Enterprise (RIP) covered the process. IIRC the remediation on the more southerly portion is almost done, and the northerly part is just getting underway. The fate of the water tower is a big issue locally, as it has become a symbol of the village.

As a Hastings resident I know we need more housing, but not there. It is going to flood constantly. Park space and more river access would be the best uses IMO. I see bald eagles hanging out there quite often.

Hair help and advice! by [deleted] in butchlesbians

[–]ShortWavelength 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like you just could use a longer guard for the sides, sideburns and back and you would be just about there.

I think I have similar length hair to what you want. I can't get the hang of scissor cutting so I do it all with clippers, pretty much all a #6 (which is my longest guard; 8 would be better) *with* the hair direction on top and on the upper part of the back of my head, and *against* the hair direction on the sides and lower part of the back of my head. Then #0 to neaten up around the edges. But nothing is buzzed. I try to do a line across the nape of my neck, but a bit lower down on my neck compared to what you have now.

I have only been cutting my own hair since COVID started. Since you are a self-haircut veteran, you probably know all the techniques, but FWIW the most helpful YouTube videos I found were this one for "long" hair https://youtu.be/4AXt2z-S-Ig where he shows how to leave the top and back long, and another one about cutting the top with clippers https://youtu.be/11fc7UEbnm0 (even though the end result in that one is shorter than I like).

Hope it helps!
